View Full Version : Which TGPers albums are you digging on?
jazzandmetal?

TGP Name and title of the disc:
Aram - Sean Noonan and Aram Bajakian - Chips
Bassomatic - Random Access Orkestra - Random Access Orkestra
Mondoslug - Andy Most - Unexpected Visitor
I really dig all 3 of these albums. I got 2 on itunes and picked up the disc from Bassomatic. They are all different types of music, but none are rock or even very straight ahead. They all have something new every time you listen to them.
I listen to Aram play and I can't help but think...what the hell is this dude thinking about when he plays! Amazing. Have Boxing Dreams on the way as well.
I listen to Andy and wonder how the hell he is playing what he is playing. Great playing and tone.
And the Random Access Orkestra is just beautifully put together and I hear something new every time I listen to it. Matte is also on this disc. ( and I will be picking his up when it is available ).
What am I missing on TGP? Who else should I be checking out?

dsj- Populations (the Caribbean) a WONDERFULLY crafted album. Not a lot of guitar heroics, but great textures, arrangements, tunes, lyrics ... Dav is clearly the kind of guitar player who's so good he doesn't need to blow you away with his chops. -E

Honestly man, a lot of times I'll hear something I played and I'll think to myself, "Damn, how did i do that? What was I thinking?"
It's fun! Anyhow- thanks for your comments. I think you'll dig boxing dreams. It's the first album that I really feel proud of.
was recently listening to CHIPS and really liked it as well. I recorded it in 2001, right when I moved to the city. We mixed it in the Columbia University Computer music lab (where i was going to school at the time).
I had no idea how to mix- we were just going by instinct. There's a real innocence in it, but also a feeling limitlessness.
We had no idea what we were doing, and were really exploring- weren't as confined with ideas of what is "good" and "bad".
It's really cool to listen back to it.

It's a short list, but all that I know:
Kimock--much more than Eudemonic, Tongue N' Groove is in my top 10 for life
TravisE, The Silver Dukes this isn't fair cause the record isn't done, but if you want to hear some awesome music that is sort of a Jack White, Oasis, Delany and Bonnie, Howlin Wolf kinda crazy from a kickass singer/songwriter then find this record
I would like to think more of the folks I listen to hang around here, but if not, I'm glad to isten to the two above.
Almost forgot, I bought Scott Peterson's "Rainshine" at the last PRS Forum Event, also a very kick ass record featuring many PRS Forum/Members. GO Scott!!!
Tim
I just got both of Tomo's albums, and not only am I groovin - my baby girl did her first headbangin' session listening to it, she's only one! Thanks!

The whole point of this is to turn fellow TGPers on to other TGPers. It isn't about mentioning your favorite player here or anything. Just some suggestions on a few discs.

I have suggested on a couple of posts that it would be great to have a section here on TGP for members that have CDs out to say "Hi here I am buy me" !!! (I don,t have a CD out of my music BTW so......!!!)
At the moment I only have three CDs by TGP members.
"HECTIC WATERMELON" By John Czajkowski.
"CURRENT" By Jack Broad.
And "DOG HOUSE" By Ed DeGenaro.
And thats saying something for me because for the last six years I have,nt had a Hi-Fi so if I play a CD its on my laptop and I hate sitting at a laptop. So any good clips I hear at TGP I find of great interest. And I,ve heard some world class players here and a couple of fantastic writers. One guy that always sticks in my mind is ex member Sub-D (Chris Taylor) to me he is mister cool on so many levels.
I can,t really mention names of other players as there are so many and if I,ve left a comment on one of there posts then they know who they are anyway. mmmmmmm :phones

The only reason I haven't mention Chris Taylor is the OP asked for albums and I actually have none of his. That said, from when I heard the infamous Ted M remix, to the stuff he did/does for me or for the John C/Minneman disk Chris is one of my all time fave writers/producers and he kills on guitar and keys as well.
The tunes he's been doing for and with me he just knocks it out of the ball park.

Just got Boxing Dreams by Sean Noonan which Aram is on.
I don't know what kind of music genre it falls into, but it is a fantastic cd.
Thanks man! Glad you liked it.
We actually had some difficulty describing the genre as well.
Don't know if this helps, but here's the press release that we sent out.
"Noonan approaches postmodern jazz and world music from the angle of self-discovery...He attempts to braid together the Celtic balladry of his ancestors with the various traditions of West African griots, Southern bluesmen and downtown-scene alchemists [and] manages to make his pieces speak coherently, and in a unified voice." - Nate Chinen, New York Times
Since the release of his previous Songlines record Stories to Tell (http://songlines.com/storiescontent.html) in early 2007, Sean Noonan has been busy stirring up the ingredients of his unique "wandering folk music" project, and here's the new brew. Grandiose, intoxicating, and sui generis, Boxing Dreams is a wildly ambitious and idiosyncratic concept album that blends passionate vocals and time-honored lyrics from Ireland, Mali and Senegal, raw power-jamming jazz/rock guitars, shape-shifting improv viola, dense soundscapes, funked or punked up drum and bass grooves and complex, dancing polyrhythms. The musical stories Noonan tells are as diverse as ever, but the overriding metaphor of the record's title suggests how he wrestled its elements and his own restless subconscious into a personal artistic vision:
"The main effect I wanted in Boxing Dreams was to give the impression that the entire album is a single boxed dream, where each song captures a different dreamed or imagined story. 'Morpheus' in some ways sets the dreamy mood of the album. Morpheus is the god of dreams, who assumes any shape and form, and on this song Susan McKeown sings from an Irish Gaelic aisling or dream poem called 'Magic Mist.' 'Courage' is a tribute to my hometown (Brockton, Massachusetts) boxing legend Rocky Marciano, who remains the only heavyweight champion in boxing history to retire having won every fight in his professional career. Lately I've been intrigued by the physical intensity and body movements of boxing. I'm beginning to visualize these movements and apply boxing concepts in my drumming. 'The Return of the Peanut Butter Queen' was first an actual dream I had about a queen named Ilylea who taught her fellow peanuts the magic of making peanut butter, creating great prosperity and hope in the land of peanut. Later I wandered this story into a composition. 'Story of Jones' is a country-style instrumental narrative - each of the three sections re-enacts what happened on the famous train engineer's journey to the promised land in 1900. Jones lost his life saving his passengers when he collided with Old No. 9 in Tennessee and was found dead still gripping the train's brakes."
Along with the dream concept there's a lot more singing on Boxing Dreams than on Stories to Tell, and generally the songs are multi-lingual (Gaelic, Wolof, Bambara, English). Says Sean: “I think of my songs as old wine in new bottles, where my mission is to truly further understand and preserve folklore and present it in a modern context. A major aspect of Boxing Dreams is how the music adapts storytelling, folklore and post-modern jazz, merging material from the Bardic and Griot traditions.” The singers were given freedom to interpret the compositions: “I would first have them listen to the music and then told them what the basic theme was and have them sing about what they visualized. Both Susan and Abdoulaye surprised me in how they complemented the instrumental arrangements, and Susan discovered and presented some amazing Irish literature.” An example of the unique synergy between voices and instruments: Susan's sound is entranced and bewitching, and Mat Maneri is like her instrumental shadow or familiar. As Aram Bajakian, Sean's closest musical collaborator here, comments: "There's something really eerie about the way Susan's voice goes with Mat's playing. And then Abdoulaye will come in, and it brings a smile to your face. He has such an amazing presence." And this is just one example of the surprising juxtapositions Noonan pulls off throughout the record. With Marc Ribot and Jamaaladeen Tacuma adding their own brilliant improvising to the brew, Boxing Dreams takes Sean's Afro-Celtic-American project to a new level."
Just got the domain up for our Jan 09 release. Just a place holder till I get the site built up.

Thanks for the mentions genteelmens. Much gusto. Nice to hear people are still digging he first Hectic Watermelon album.
Wow…I have a whole bunch of Cds, iTunes, and just homegrown mp3s from friends and the many great players who post here on TGP. But to answer the OP’s question, the CDs I just can’t seem to pry out of my changer these days are “Presenz” from David Torn (still...timeless like all his others), “Ta Da” from Chris Nix and his trio, the Power Triplets. Also, I’m digging Jack Broad’s new CD. I continue to be a proud member of the “I want to be like Andy Most” club! That wise guy, Chuck D'Aloia makes me very glad I don’t really consider myself a fusion guitarist...jeez! I am always impressed with my good drinking/pluckin’ buddy, Brian Kahanek’s knack for crafting complete, unified albums that feel passionate, powerful and professional all the way through, skin to skin. Lastly, Ad Astra has a fantastic new Prog Metal Fusion CD ranch-handed by Joe Narduli that is also very well-crafted. He doesn’t rely on any guests to do his work for him. It commands your attention as both player and songwriter. Bassomatic’s new one is a wonderful combination of avant-garde vision meets downtown. Honestly, I hate getting rolling publicly mentioning names as there are too many friends and legions of great players here to list all those who have given me inspiration, knowledge or just plain enjoyment here. Enjoyment…what a concept, huh?
On a personal note, I am sitting here on a completed, mastered album I did with Marco Minnemann called “West ZooOpolis” that I composed around a virtuosic (severe understatement) 51-minute improvised studio drum performance. After I got started on it last year, several other guitarist-composers, including Mike Keneally, Alex Machacek, Trey Gunn, and Phi Yan-Zek, followed suit. The plan is to release them all on Abstract Logix early next year in a big box set with individual releases to follow. Chris Taylor helped co-write 2 beautiful sections on West ZooOpolis - just worked/played his bleeping ass off - my hero. Ed D played a cool solo too. Meanwhile, I am writing music for the next Hectic Watermelon album which feels like a blast back to 90s rock/fusion/pop/punk/grunge world for me! Actually, it is good therapy to recuperate from Marco’s terrifying album. Actually he has already played some tracks on a few of the new HWM tunes, and the illustrious Mr. Jerry Goodman will again assault the new Hectic Watermelon album just like the last one! Although I want to try to keep the guests to a minimum to preserve the overall unity of feel and band atmosphere like the last one, there may be some more guests.

Absolutely,
'Love is a simple truth' is really rockin. Not heard all tracks yet but i'm ordering that soon.
Ed's new one also looks interesting as does Matte's and Jack Broad.
One thing i think is important to mention, and that is there are so many great players who's CD's i don't own because the music/writing often doesn't inspire me. This has happened over the years with Robben Larry Metheny Holdsworth
et al. It's the same for my old stuff and actually some of my new stuff too.
Some good solo's but not particularly memorable tunes or grooves.
I wrote a tune for my latest album. I wrote it about 10 years ago. Recorded
it and played a good solo on it. But when i heard it in the cold light of day i had to say i didn't really like it anymore. So it didn't make the album.
I guess this is new thread material but i think it's relevant here.

what a great thread! there are so many great players on tgp but not all of them have cd's out. that said, i love all of chuck d'aloia's cd's and simeon harris' "the assessment" is really cool (fans of eivind aarset should check it out). i'm not sure if ede wright is a regular around these parts but his latest cd "earthbound gravity" is killing. david torn's "prezens" is always in heavy rotation too. i will most likely be picking up the new releases from matte, john czajkowski, gene ess and mike walker because the clips that i've heard are all fantastic. i wish sub-d (chris taylor) would release something since he's one of my favorite tgp'ers.

Cool thread!!! I really appreciate Chris Taylor's work, Findlay's, Mondoslug's, Scott Lerner's, Joseph's, David Torn's, Ed's, and many others'. I appreciate how this place gathers some phenomenal players. Has been motivating since I discovered the forum a couple years past.
I have two CDs out: Mr. Pickhead (self-produced) and the Keeley Effect, out since Jan. '08, recorded in partnership with Robert Keeley. It was reviewed in Vintage Guitar Magazine, July '08. Mr. Pickhead was what I did with my time when laid off by the auto industry in 2002.
I'll bookmark this thread and start getting busy investigating the many great titles posted. Thanks, OP.

Well, geeez, thanx for the props.......
Mmm, there's some stuff that I'm on that might be on cd? A Ronnie Spector record from the 80's (interesting solo on one cut I did with a Coral sitar crankin thru a Marshall), uhh, this Guy Glen Burtnick, his record "Hero's and Zeros" (he was in Styx for a little, Beatle mania, Jan Hammer group, buncha other things). Did a lot of different things back in the 80's....some on cd, some not....
But anyway, that's not my tuneage, just sessions I was on. One of these days I'd like to record my stuff, not diluted and put something out, ala Jack B (killer record! All him? way cool!). All me and no one else. I always admired those kinda artist, ala Todd Rundgren, Roy Wood, Prince, etc.
No oops, you need to state those things, I may have not seen that other post! Cool.

This is a really nice thread! I have to say any adjectives describing music will always fall short of the one true measure of someone's music: do you actually come back to listen to someone's posted music or do you listen to it, perhaps make nice comments, but never go back to it again? So it's really nice to see people mentioning other TGPers whose music has broken into the regular rotation of the most difficult Program Director on the planet: our own personal listening habits.
Anyway, because of all the comments about GregV's stuff I checked it out. I'm not usually into Americana - I usually go for giant instrumental sounds behind vocalists - but on this sunny Spring-ish Saturday in Boston it really hits the spot!

If you like melodic prog rock ranging from Genesis/Yes/Rush/Styx to Marillion/Porcupine Tree/Dream Theater, then you should check out the new CD from my band, Days Before Tomorrow.
It was produced by Ron Nevison, the industry legend who gave us little things like... Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti, The Who's Quadraphenia, and more from Heart, Bad Co, Jefferson Starship, Europe, Ozzy Ozbourne, and a ton of others.
http://www.myspace.com/daysbeforetomorrow -- we have four songs from the CD posted, and links to buy the CD or get tickets to see us perform in NJ with Keith Emerson (of ELP fame).
Our tone on the CD is mostly from the Mesa/Boogie Dual Recto lineage, but many other amps and a ton of different guitars were put to use in the recording. I hope you like it!

2009 release, follow up to Dog House.
Ed DeGenaro teamed up with writer/producer Chris Taylor (Randy Brecker, Lionel Hampton, Grover Washington Jr.)who wrote and produced the majority of this CD. This album is as before Ed's take on a various influences, more refined than previous ones. The guys playing on this are all masters of their craft. With Dave Weckl (Mike Stern, Chick Corea), Joel Rosenblatt (Spyro Gyro, Steve Khan), Marco Minnemann (Mike Kenneally, Paul Gilbert) on drums and Ric Fierabracci (Frank Gambale, Brett Garsed, Chick Corea) on bass, George Whitty (Brecker Bros, Oz Noy, Chaka Khan) on organ, and Chris Taylor on keys and additional guitars it was bound to be a strong album.
If that was not enough, super guitar virtuoso Ray Gomez (solo artist, Stanley Clarke, Steps Ahead) makes a guest appearance on guitar. As does Matte Henderson, who also wrote two tunes for the album.
This CD is amazing material together with amazing musicianship.

That sounds very cool! I know Mr. De Genaro is a fan of Ray Gomez, so that must have been quite something to have him on the album. The other players are awesome, too. Marco is a looney - in the best possible way. If they have it on iTunes Japan I'll be picking it up ASAP.

It will be on itunes eventually, usually takes about 3 month. That said I think both CD baby and Abstract will have it as download in a few days...

Our name sounds emo, I know, but we're not even close to emo. Kinda like an REM, Hootie & the Blowfish sound. Our latest album, Beautiful Noise, was recorded in November 2007, when I just turned 13 (I'm Brendan Kelly) and my brothers turned 16. Our bassist, Shaun, was 21 at the time. It was produced by Malcolm Burn who won a Grammy for Emmylou Harris's "Red Dirt Girl" and has worked with everyone from Bob Dylan to Iggy Pop. Let me know what you think.

Hi All...
My buddy Chuck D'Aloia has just released a new CD called "Circle 7" with some heavy world-class guitarmanship!!!Heavy rotation here.On drums another heavy: Art Bernstein-a master of funk/latin & Afro-Cuban drum grooves.
The combination of harmonic taste & complexity are hard to beat. However
there is also a gorgeous slow blues which hits somewhere between Robben & Larry with Chucks own 'bob' sensibilities thrown in.
I could go on & on but I have to go write some mashed potatoes (without the gravy-thanks Billy Bob!).
Go to Chucks web here for purchase info: http://www.chuckdaloiamusic.com/
Chuck will be appearing at the NY Amp Show May 9th (and the jam May 8th). AND he will also have copies of his new DVD guitar intructional called "Blues With Brains":

What he said, between that, Adam Stark's and Matte Henderson's upcoming release I hope I've seen the last of those "there isn't any good music ou there threads".
Chuck, you have that rare combination of chops, pocket and great note choice. I'm a fan.

Finally had the time to listen to some of Ed's new record.
Holy sh*t is it good.
I'm wiped right now from a long week at work/school, but I'll be expanding on this initial impression.
Ed and Chris (Sub-D) in particular make a rather terrifying team. The Teutonic Terror does it again.

Oh yeah - I would´ve included Mr Bassomatic´s RAO release here to, but unfortunately my bassplaying younger brother was visiting shortly after I received it, him being into Drum & Bass and such, I told him to check it out - Haven´t seen it since. I am however getting reports saying it´s "good stuff". Might have to get another copy^^
Cheers

Also Chuck D's Circle 7 (wow!) Basso's Random Access Orkestra's (also great, Matte's killin on it), and "late to the party" Andy Most's "Unexpected Visitor", great playing on there, and the acoustic tunes are really very cool! Also late (better late then never) is Splatt's "Prezens, big wow there! I dug em live, but I'm really diggin the record, maybe a little more.....
Tell ya, so many great players on here at ye old TGP, extremely humbling....in a very good way, you need your eyes (and ears) opened up once in a while, lol......

+1 for Woody.
I love his articulate, musical phrasing and his D-style tone that many of us here are experimenting with.
Congrats Woody! (and Ed Poole)
