View Full Version : What are some other hobbies you guys enjoy?

I don't know. As a home player/hobbyist I just don't have the burning desire to play I once did. Sometimes I feel I play more out of guilt of owning the gear than of just wanting to for the enjoyment of it.

Anyway, maybe it's time to get into a new hobby and I'd like to know what some of you enjoy doing on a fairly regular basis. I mean, I'd love to learn fly fishing but it isn't something I could do on a daily basis.

Please feel free to elaborate on what you find to be satisfying about a particular activity or what you enjoy about it.

I may be a bit nerdy, but I enjoy flying model airplanes and collecting coins as a hobby. To me atleast, guitar playing seems more of than a hobby, almost like something spiritual. To me guitar playing is in a whole different level

a bit nerdy?!

those are the king of nerdy . . . well I suppose you could go around with a metal detector at the beach. ;)

I'm just funnin, my best and oldest friend is also a coin collector: it can be a pretty profound thing, the way that different ideas are mirrored in the means-of-exchange.
He gave me an old Roman coin that I keep taped (in its case) to my computer monitor - the old and the new together.

Bones, I have a Canon A-1 from 1984 and various lenses, filters, etc. Haven't done much serious shooting in years. I've actually been thinking of getting a D-SLR lately and getting back into it.

fender 753, flying model planes sounds like it would be fun.

Bicycling, if you're the active type that is. I'm a roadie, but off-road is cool as well. Lots of guitarists like it, as it involves lots of equipment to compare, tinker with, and argue about, and has a high Zen factor. Gets you in killer condition as well. I'm also an addicted 'fixie' (fixed gear psycho) too....a total Zen.

I love fly fishing. I started when I was 7 or 8. It's very relaxing and fulfilling.

I also love running, anything from 3 miles to marathons. I have run 3 marathons this year, 2:52 as the best one, and I love it. Very nice feeling to be in top shape, and you keep thin and with lots of endurance it's easier to focus on other things too. It's also the best stress reliever I know of. Compliments music well too.

Kayaking and fishing. Those things 'center' me, and remove the mad world of technology from my brain. Something as simple as studying why a fish might be in a particular location really puts things in perspective.

Of course, filet-ing said fish and rolling in Lousiana Fish Fry (the blue bag, seasoned), and frying in 375 degree corn oil puts even more of life in perspective. :-)

Bayonet studs and compensators make me happy. I'd never need either but bayonet studs give me fond memories of boot camp and the pain felt by holding onto 6142603's (can't believe I still remember her serial number) in a moment of sweaty-fingered desperation. I never really understood why bayonet studs were made illegal. How many people are bayoneted in gangland killings? I like to read a lot. I can't afford many other hobbies at the moment but I am a decent model airplane pilot. I used to play video games but I haven't been into it recently. Time to go to bed and prepare for my other current hobby, overtime.

Writing and recording music. I took up building guitars for a few years, built some pretty cool guitars but it was a money pit and kinda detracted from my playing.

Otherwise, the wife and I own a small farm and we have 5 horses. I don't ride often but i'll occasionally saddle up on the weekend after I have a few beers. But there is always work to be done on the farm.... fun stuff like bailing hay, fixing fence building stuff etc... I find it all a good contrast to music.

My passion for music has been killed a lot the last few years. My job and marriage just doesn't allow the freedom I used to have. Also, my band got together after a 2 year break, and the magic isn't there, so I feel like I am spinning my wheels.

Mountain biking is my other passion, and I just sold a guitar to fund a bike. I never thought the day would come where I'd sell a guitar to buy a bike.

It;s weird, but my passion for the guitar has really diminished. I still love playing, but the other stuff isn't worth it. I'd rather watch tv with my wife on a Friday than go out and fight with club owners and play to empty bars for free.

British Bulldogs (check my avatar). Love the breed.

Have done tons and tons of research into the breed and top breeders, bloodlines and pedigrees in the U.K. - where the breed originated. I used to research and track pedigrees for hours on end. Amazingly cool stuff (to me).

It's been a learning experience, and I have luckily met some pretty cool people along the way....not to mention having had two incredible Bulldogs (one's snoring in the next room right now....). It also led to my wife and me becoming active for awhile in Bulldog Rescue.

It started as a hobby, became a passion (going way beyond my music - and I have done plenty of gigging) and, somewhere along the way, turned into unquestioned dedication and love.

Scuba Diving. I have been fortunate enough to visit and dive some amazing places around the world (Galapagos, Fiji, all over the Caribbean) and have seen some incredible things (from whale sharks and hammerheads by the hundreds to seahorses and critters that require a magnifying glass). Sometimes it is just the beauty of the sunlight streaking through the water onto impossibly white sand and multicolored coral reefs like in Cozumel, Mexico.

And kudos to the fellow Bulldog lover above. I have owned two and they were the best pets I have ever had.

I came in the front door at 5am this morning. My wife’s alarm clock was already on. She says I might as well get in bed as opposed to sleeping on the couch ‘cause she’s getting up right now.

I reek of cigarette and cigar smoke, cheap beer and expensive scotch.

I just got home from playing my other hobby for over 9 hours straight.

She would have put a stop to this behavior long ago except for this: I toss my Mariners cap onto the rack; throw my jacket on the floor; drop my card-marker and lighter on the stand in the hallway and pull out my wallet.

I flip the wallet open and get a thumb and forefinger on the wad of bills and flop the wallet down. I count the bills. My wife peeks over my shoulder and asks how it went.

“Woulda been twice as much if that flush woulda hit. I don’t chase a lot, but they priced me in big-time”.

“Is that from the tourney or the cash game?” she asks. She already knows the answer.

“Cash” I reply.

“Of course” she says rolling her eyes.

I remind her “Make sure to keep those Powerball losers so we can write them off on our taxes against my Vegas winnings”…

I am an amateur who has enjoyed some success at No limit Texas hold’em poker. I won two tourneys in Vegas early in September back to back and I am planning on returning next June for a $1500 buy-in WSOP regional bracelet event. I’ll keep my day job…for now…

I personally never found any delight in flying airplanes (aerobatic, personal, RCs, whatever) away from the job.

I tried to find interests outside of work. But, that's just me. I know a lot of pilots that spend all their free time tinkering on their personal aircraft in their hangars, or flying their RC planes, or building some homebuilt, or some other such thing. I left aviation completely behind when I drove away from the airport parking lot on my days off.

I agree, except for the RC part. I've enjoyed it since I was a kid, and still do. I've never had any interest in flying light airplanes for fun after learning to fly. I have friends who own airplanes and the only one I really enjoy flying is my friend's T-34.

I love golf. When I was playing a lot, I was scoring in the mid 80's. But much like guitar playing, there isn't as much time to do either with family, work, etc.
I still gig once or twice a month. But, getting 4-5 hours to play golf on a weekend is a tough sell.

When I'm doing any of those things I'm working around the yard or taking a nap. Makes for a pretty full day....:)

Beer.

I also enjoy road trips, hanging out in the state parks of Oklahoma, and having an obsessive compulsive music collection disorder.

But mostly beer.

Aside from guitars, astronomy is my other big money pit. Looking at and imaging (well, attempting to - I'm still new to digital astro imaging) objects thousands / millions of light years away has a way of putting things in perspective. It's incredibly relaxing, too.

And talk about gear! Astronomy is a great way of relieving yourself of that pesky extra income...

I play guitar for a living, so it was never a hobby for me.

About a year and a half ago, I got into figure skating. I've always loved watching it and never tried it until the day before my 45th birthday when I finally told myself, "Dude, you're not getting any younger". I've gone a few days a week religiously since, have been taking lessons and entered a few adult beginner competitions.

I absolutely love it.

Music isnt a hobby with me either.

My wife got me into hiking, and I really enjoy it.
We have a house full of pets (3 cats/2 dogs/3 fresh water aquariums) who keep us busy and happy.
I read (seems this place cuts into that time, though), and used to enjoy playing Tennis/Basketball.

NFL Football...COLTS!!!! Another seasonal passion. (But you all know that!)

The get down and dirty part...too.
(whenever I can)

My wife and kids and I actually love to cook as a stress reliever. Some of the best (well...non-marital related) times I have with my wife of 4 years have involved wine, gourmet food and the kitchen. We are addicted to the Food Network as well!
