Lots of GC bashing here, some by me I'll admit, but I'm a big fan of reporting the good with the bad.
Today I went to GC in Springfield NJ. I try not to go on weekends because it's a bit crazy, but I needed a field recorder and I was too stupid to order it during the week from B&H.
The experience started out bad - no one would talk to me. GC people just walked right past me while I waited at the counter. I decided not to get annoyed, and asked for some help, which I got. Imagine that...
I was looking for the Sony PCM-D50 recorder, but they didn't have it. I was bummed, but they did have the Olympus LS-10 which was my second choice. As I was looking at it, another GC employee came over and started raving about it. We started talking and I discovered that he was the General Manager. Super nice guy. He saw I had a Mesa Boogie catalog so we talked amps for a while. He had also delivered a drum set to my town (1+ hours away) at one point so we chatted about that briefly.
I asked about price matching, and they did which saved me a cool $50, and they also offered to take my 10% off coupon on top of that!
When I got to the car, I realized that they didn't do the 10% off, so I went back in, and after some deliberation, told me that they aren't supposed to stack deals like that, but they did. That was worth another $35!
I'm a huge believer in supporting the little guy, but a lot of the high-end stuff just isn't available from the little guys around here. Because of this experience, I'll certainly go back, and I'll ask for this guy - not because I expect better deals, but because I enjoyed the experience.
Everyone who says to find a good guy at your GC and deal with him is 100% spot on.
BTW the Oly recorder is awesome.
