I have a pretty new computer with windows xp. The last computer I had also had windows xp and did not have this problem. Basically when I copy something from a website and paste it into Word, the program closes. To get around this I either have to paste into Notepad and then copy it again from Notepad into Word or paste the text into an email and copy it again from there to Works. For whatever reason I can't paste directly into Works without it closing. Not a big deal but I'm just wondering what's up with it?

Sorry that you're having trouble...

...but you should've gotten a Mac.

New Machine? That could be good. If you don't have a ton of data and software loaded, formatting and re-installing on a clean disk might help. Sometimes those Windows disks have bits of corrupted data that do all sorts of strange things.

But you wanted somebody who's intelligent about computers...ya might wanna wait for a few more replies in that case.

...speakin' for myself, y'understand...

Try this...

Paying particular attention to step 2.

Your pasting into a document in Word or Works?
Which one is giving you trouble, you list both.

Run a virus and spyware scan...then see if it still happens. Also the repair link above is a good idea.
other questions:
Which program closes? works, IE, another browser or word?
What version is IE?
Does this happen with other browsers, or programs when pasting? Try firefox or chrome and see if the same thing happens.
Is this XP service pack 1, 2, 3?
If it's less than SP 2, Run windows update, although if you have an AMD chip you probably shouldn't do that.

Run an antivirus program, here is a free one http://free.avg.com/

Run a spyware program, here is a free one http://www.lavasoft.com/

Still having the problem? Uninstall and reinstall the word processor your having problems with.

Still having the problem? Pop in your windows disc and re-install windows, you will not lose any information unless you attempt to reformat.

Still having the problem? I'd just go with the windows fix-all and reformat the computer .

I'd probably run a 'detect and repair' from within works, but honestly - why use works anyway? Any documents you create in its native format can only be reopened again in another copy of works, and hardly anyone uses works.

Hey Bradd. The guys at my PC supplier are strongly of the opinion that re-installing without formatting is too buggy to be worthwhile. My limited experience would bear that out, so personally I only re-install following a format of the drive. Dissenting opinions very welcome.

Really?! Wow I've never heard that. I'm an old school computer guy though and havn't really been building them/debugging them in nearly 5 years now, could the problems possibly be strictly with Vista reinstalls? I've fixed lots of problems in Win 98 / ME / XP with re-installs so its never been an issue for me, though the topic creator should consider it. Thanks for the tip!

Sorry I used both Word and Works. It's Works, and that is the one that closes when I paste into it. My browser is fine. :) I'll try some of the stuff listed here and report back, thanks!

alright-
if you dont have a virus
your xp isnt corrupt
no malware?
no spyware?

Check your ram-
run memtest86 off a Floppy, might take a few hours _
RAM can Ruin a pc's operation rapidly.
All it takes is 1 bad module. and the silliyest, most ridiculous feature might not work properly.

For instance, for the longest time I could not copy and paste Smoothly, the pc would lock up, new box, top of the line, $2k spent, well 2 weeks ago, one of my sticks of ram tested bad, The moment I yanked it, the pc was running like a bat out of hell, have had a few other instances of this in the past with DDR1 systems, and some older pc133 boxes, From what I've read allot of these DDR2-3 modules are very poorly built, hence the ability to pickup 4gb for $80..

check your ram :)

Where did you get this computer? Did you install the operating system, or was it installed by someone else? If so, who installed it (was it Dell, or someone on eBay)?

Do you have a NAT router on your internet connection? (i.e., do you have a router, or do you plug your computer directly into your cable modem or other device providing internet access...)

Are you running Service Pack 2 (or 3) of Windows XP?

It must really suck to own a Mac. I feel for those strange, lonely people.
