It is next on my list to acquire and enjoy. :)

Awesome stuff, but not for the faint of heart. A real powerhouse.
I haven't had it for a while because the price went from $45 to $85 a couple of years ago.

Yup. Might be my favorite, of those that are even in the realm of reasonable. In the same intense peaty, seaweedy range as Laphraoig, but more sophisticated and complex. Really stunning.

Its 'bout my favorite, If I go to extreme peat it Laphroig
I prefer Lagavulin over 18 MacCallan.
Its pricey but worth it.

my favorite, in fact just about the only Scotch I like to drink.

I have a bottle of Lagavulin that has acquired a special place in my home. We only bring it down for births & deaths.

Have you tried 18-year-old Highland Park?
Damn good.

I'd have to say it's just about my favourite. I like Laphroig too but Lagavulin is smokier and more complex. I recently got a bottle of Oban on a friend's recommendation. When I first tasted it I was disappointed because it had nowhere near the intensity of Lagavulin. But it IS growing on me. So much so that there's not much left in the bottle!

But Lagavulin is definitely the scotch I would ask for if someone was offering.

I just picked up a bottle of Oban; easily one of my favorites. Goes down nice and smooth, especially after the first one.

I really dig Lagavulin too. It doesn't strike me as smoky/peaty as Laphroig, which I thought was a bit much.

At both of their price points, only myself, my wife, or a few select friends get to partake. The rest get Dewars.

Awesome Scotch! I just recently got a bottle after having it on my "to buy" list. This is not a starter Scotch. For that I have my friends try Glenmorangie 10 year, which is easily one of the best single malts for the money.

I currently have two bottles of single malt - Lagavulin 12 year and one that I always have a soft spot for...

My favorite. It leans toward the smoky/peaty full flavored side of scotch whisky, which is my preference. The 16 year old is very smooth.

If you like the peaty ones, Lag 16 is tough to beat. Even at the higher price it's still a good deal.

Lagavulin and McCallin "cask strength" are my favorites. My wife likes Bowmore or Balvenie "Double Wood".

thanks for the recommendations, my favorite so far is the Glenmorangie 18 yr old, but I love trying new single malts, they are all so different.

Talisker 10 is indeed excellent, too -- I tasted their 18 a few months ago, and it was exceptional.

A favorite of mine as well although comparing a peaty Islay to Macallan or Talisker is IMO like comparing Coke with Sprite, two completely different styles.

Peaty scotch is an acquired taste, some just hate it others can't get enough. I prefer the peat monsters in the cooler weather.
If in your face peat and smoke is your thing then you MUST try Ardbeg Uigeadail, it is a monster

I've not had the pleasure yet - how would you compare them?

+1 on the Ardbegs. I was turned onto that with the 1975 Reserve - completely unobtaneum now, sadly. So the Uigeadail is a pleasant reminder.

D&M Wines & Liquors in SF describe the Ardbegs - especially the 10 y.o. - as "a great dirty brute of a Scotch". :)

And I love my Lagavulins and my Taliskers as well.

If you ever find a bottle of Port Ellen - ANY Port Ellen - buy it, no matter the price. If you like Islays, there were none better. Ever.

I love it but only pop for a bottle at Christmas time.

HEY!!!! it's just about that time of year isn't it?

Along with Laphroaig Cask Strength and Ardbeg Uigeadail, Lagavulin is one of my three favorite single malts.

Islay FTW! :banana

one thing about good scotch that I could never understand.

why is it that with each sip, it tastes better than the sip before ?

Gave it a try, too briney for me, I like the Highland stuff. 18yrMac for me still have a bottle of 1978 18yr. I break into occasionally when I dive into my stash of Padron Ann. cigars (not done very often).

Padron Anniversary?...I have a 'collection agent' coming to your neighborhood. Painless, really.

you guys that like Lagavulin, do you drink it often?

I found that I liked it in small amounts but a bottle would last me forever.

highland park 18 on the other hand I could sip every night.

I like it enough to drink it often. I just can't afford to keep buying $80-90 bottles.

If I have Laga-V in the house it does not last long. Problem is I like most scotches with few exceptions.

Talisker 10 is IMO one of the best bang for the buck singles out there, peppery is the word that always comes to mind, very good and unique.

I liked the Cragganmore but to me it was a lightweight summer whiskey, light delicate, flowery, very good but I prefer something more robust.

No.

In general, I don't like Scotch. I love my Lagavulin, but I have it probably 6 times a year, I've been working on this bottle for 5 yrs. or so (almost done).

Lagavulin is great when I can get it; Laphroaig when I can't.

A good one for sure

I'm currently going through a Scapa 12 yr old from Orkney, a Glenrothes 14yr old sherrywood finish and a Bruichladdich 12yr old Islay malt, which is a bit less peaty for those who want an Islay malt but fear the peat :D Although I personally love a strong peaty flavour as well
