Card-carrying SK fan here. Great guy, wonderful player, love what he does with Eyewitness, love what he did in the '70s solo and with the Brecker Bros, love his thoughtful transcriptions of Wes and Pat Martino...
...one of the all-time unsung heroes.

Long time friend/fan - I met Steve in 1981 or so, at Seventh Ave South with Eyewitness then, and have stayed in touch with him over the years - yes, a great unsung guitarist, as well as a great human being! I lack a few of his recent outings, but have most of his material on CD. Always loved his CBD outings - Arrows, etc... and was lucky enough to find those on CD too!
Steve's got a great website, with some really tasty transcriptions which he does and posts for free download - you can't beat that with a stick. Check out his website: http://stevekhan.com/
Steve's dad was none other than the late-great Sammy Cahn!

One of my favorite guitar players and an outstanding human being as well. Have you heard the latest live CD, "The Suitcase?" It's pretty amazing!

My favorite Steve Khan album is still "The Blue Man" I just loved back in the late '70s that his aproach was so fresh and unique. No fast licks at all but you could tell in 2 or 3 notes that it was him.
A couple years ago my son and I found a tape of that album and listened to it. He hadn't heard it since he was a toddler. It almost freaked him out because he could still remember every note because I used to listen to it so much when he was about 2 years old. He loved it.
SK still has his own individual voice even though it has evolved over the years. For another example of his approach from back then listen to Steely Dan's "Glamour Profession" on Gaucho. So cool...

yup .. i got to study with him for 2 1/2 days at NGSW back in 91 .... very good teacher, not at all cryptic - very generous in explanation ... i remember a solo he took demonstrating some 'outside' concepts - the class broke out into spontaneous applause when he was finished because it was just so hip and it seeemed to take him aback from his appreciative reaction
and also a very cool guy - had lunch with us inthe cafeteria and told stories about being on letterman and growing up with a famous dad with famous friends (the guest list at his bar mitzvah was a show biz who's who)
i like the album with weckl, jackson, and badrena called 'public access'

MikeI loved that solo so much when it came out I asked my guitar teacher to chart it for me. Also one of my faves is Evidence, especially a tune he did called Melancholee, by Lee Morgan. He also did an extended solo with Rob Mounsey on a compilation CD I have that is just killer.
I had asked LongIslandRod to say Hi to Steve for me. He and Coryell were my first 2 "jazz" guitar heroes!
BTW Steve, I have ALIVEMUTHERFORYA and also the Zawinul video with you on it. Big Fan Still!

Steve Khan is great, he's recently re-entered a prolific phase again, putting out some dynamite CDs these past few years, but the ones from the 90s are just as good. Always has incredible rhythm sections with him.
If you have any interest at all in jazz guitar you need to check his website.
If you're reading Steve, gotta pass on my desert island 10 seconds of guitar- the tag ending you arranged at the end of the song "Street of Dreams" from that CD 'Let's Call this'. It's so beautiful.

the night i started the NGSW session with steve, mike stern was playing at the 55 in the village ... so a bunch of us told steve we were going and invited him ... he told us he was busy so no, thanks but told us to tell mike 'hi' (he had produced a stern CD or two, iirc) ... so between sets, we were talkin to mike and told him about our studyin with khan ... he gets a huge grin on his face and says 'tell him i said he's a muthaF@ckah' and busts out laughin ... so we all cracked up too ... naturally we told him verbatim and he got a big kick outta it ... without missin a beat, he says "was he 'F@ckin' wth his volume knob all night?" .. and we all bust out laffin again because he had been ... steve told us how it drove him nuts in the studio tryin to keep a consistent level
these guys obviously had a lotta love for each other - very cool

Yeah, its great that Steve is recording again. Borrowed Time is really a special record.

>>I love Steve's playing. I've seen him with Larry Coryell
I saw Larry Coryell and Steve Khan playing duets at a gig at SUNY Stony Brook in what must have been '79 or '80. I went to see Coryell, who I'd been into for years, and came away thinking "Wow, who is this other guy?" Been fan ever since. So many great albums, but "Let's Call This" is indeed magic, a real desert island disc.
If you're reading this thread, Steve -- thanks.

Hey what is NGSW??
Steve came to UNT and did a short clinic filling in for Mike Stern who had to cancel I guess. Steve was great, even brought copies of all the charts for Sterns album at the time which was sweet. I wasn't really familiar with him at the time and wish I had been.

I was at UNT then too and still have those charts. Steve was great at the clinic and I for one was not disappointed at all when I heard about the switch. I like Mike, but anyone who sleeps on Steve is missing out on a lot!
I've been listening to Steve since Modern Times came out and I love his/their approach to group interplay. Always great tunes and arrangments and anytime Anthony Jackson is involved I'm on board. I can always recoginize his playing/tone which is very personal. I think I'll go listen to some right now.
His website is also great. He seems like a wonderful guy, willing to share his knowledge and experiences with others, which is sadly all too rare.
Thank you Steve!
David
I was lucky enough to have lessons with both Steve Khan and Mike Stern in their NY apartments. Steve was just about the nicest guy, very good teacher, even in difficult times. He has an interesting way of looking at things on the guitar.

...big fan...I bought the Wes Montgomery Guitar Folio when I was in high school and have memorized most of the chord solo's...I love playing Wes's version/Steve's transcription of I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face. Thanks Steve and (Wes!)...I also have Contemporary Chord Khancepts...as well as a couple of Steve's cd's...
...I have definitely been influenced by Steve's guitar sound (love it) and approach to improvising...

+1 on all the comments.
SK is a great guy. I've been fortunate enough to have been studying with him through the making of Borrowed Time and the mastering of the Suitcase. I was privy to many great insights on what goes on behind the scenes.
Beside being very generous sharing musical knowledge and insights to the biz he also lent me some rack gear that was collecting dust in his closet. Very cool indeed.
I'm looking forward to his next release.......
Thanks again Steve,

Eyewitness was/is very influential regarding my development as a guitarist and musician...to this day I still love playing the melody line of "Dr. Slump". Steve Khan is great...very underrated for a guy that is a heavyweight composer/studio/session guy IMO.
He has a great website too...

Gentlemen:
It's a pleasure to be able to communicate with all of you! Even though many of you are familiar with my website and/or the MySpace page. And, it's obvious that, some of you, I actually know personally from gigs, clinics, and private studies, it is still great to be able to communicate directly with everyone. Thank you for that privilege.
I really don't frequent any pages such as this, but, on occasion, someone sends me a link, just to let me know that "people" out there are talking about me, or the recordings. Needless to say, as the years have come and gone, such things are really nice to know.
I wanted everyone at this thread to know how very much I appreciate all the great comments about my playing and some of the recordings! Thank you all!!! Generally speaking, if there are questions that I can answer, I am almost always easily accessible via the CONTACT STEVE page at my website, which, for the record is: www.stevekhan.com
The MySpace page is: www.myspace.com/auxiliarypolice
The latter page was initially started by a fan from England!
Anyway, here's wishing all of you a very, very HAPPY THANKSGIVING, and a wonderful Holiday Season, despite these rather dour economic times!!! For those of you whom I've met at clinics and seminars, like those at the NGSW, I am so pleased to know that, at the very least, you felt that I behaved and treated everyone like a human being!!! That, in and of itself, is worth a great deal to me!!!
All the best,

Increasingly over the years, I've come to the conclusion that 99% of the time, a musician's work is a true window to his or her soul. Selfish, vile people rarely make good art. Steve Khan's work has entertained and educated me for some time, and so it comes as no surprise to hear all you guys testify to what a lovely person he is.
