View Full Version : Sonic phenomenon or bad ears, speakers, etc? Pitches sound lower with ears plugged.

Hey guys, experienced something tonight while tracking in my basement studio.

I was doing a ton of mixing all day. And towards the end, when I was listening to playback, I stuck my fingers in both ears, and was suprised when the pitches of the notes seemed lower. And when I took my fingers out, they seemed to return to pitch.

Is this some sort of sonic phenomenon that has to do with treble and bass?

Are my speakers delivering faulty sonic information?

Is my relatively acoustically dead basement messing with sound vibrations?

Are my ears just f*cked up?

This is weirdin' me out!!!!

I've experienced similar effects...

Yawning, for example, can produce a slight pitch change.

So can extreme volume changes.

I have no idea why... try Google.

No wonder alot of grunge sounds lower in pitch to me!

Perhaps its the doppler effect? Like when you're driving and hear a siren coming toward you, and once it passes the pitch is lower...

Something to do with sound passing through you body parts. your finger must have slowed down the sound waves ;)
