Best Intermediate Bass..

Ive decided on taking up the bass, after a few years with the guitar. Ive been looking, but I figure people here would know some good buys. I dont really want a "beginner bass"(200 or less), and I dont want anything over 500. I want it to look pretty metallish, and want to start out on a four string. Anyone got a prescription?
P.s. If you have a decent bass you want to sell, Im also interested, just dont jip me because I dont know a lot about bass "playability", or values.

For a "Metal" looking bass, try Dean.
Epiphone Nikki Sixx Thunderbird might work.
ESP and Ibanez, maybe Schecter.

One of my students has a Schecter in that range. It's quite nice. Active pups, comfortable neck.
