Hard to believe that he would be 62 today.
His band was the center of my guitar-playing focus all through high school.
I'll never forget when he died - the ABB had just come to a small, outdoor theater-in-the-round 2 months before and my parents wouldn't let me go out that school night! I still regret not running out the door anyway!
Wail on Skydog...and eat a peach for peace too.

As screwed up as things are nowadays, you can't take away the joy duane and the brothers brought and still bring when I listen to them. Thanks.

And this Skydog's 26th Wedding Anniversary. I actually remember the day that I found out he'd passed; It was my mother's b-day and I'd ditched school to go with a friend to get new tires. Sitting in the waiting room, I picked up a Chicago Tribune and saw the story. I had to go outside and compose myself. Didn't want to see anyone. Happy 62nd Birthday, Duane.

Last night I happened to listen to the live version of Elizabeth Reed and other portions of Fillmore East. I still get goose bumps hearing the fire in his playing.. Only 24 when he passed, good Lord.... Loved ya Skydog.

May his spirit NOT rest in peace but rather continue to work its magic in the heart and soul of musicians who want to tap into it.
I love you Duane.

For me Duane Allman will always be the greatest rock guitarist ever. Even when I became a jazz musician and listened to Wes, Miles, Bird, and Trane constantly, Duane was the one rock player who continued to inspire me. He was one of those rare musicians who transcended musical style or trends. He was a universal musician and world class improvisor. I play slide because of him, I play a Les Paul because of him, and I learned about modal improvisation because of him. The variety of styles he could excel at was amazing. His slide solo on Statesboro Blues, his blues solo on Stormy Monday, his minor mode solo on Liz Reed from Fillmore East, and his country rock solo on Blue Sky are my favorite solos of all time. They never cease to sound exciting to me. The fact that guitarists still talk about him after all these years tells you how great and inspirational he was. He gave the guitar a human vocal quality, which is something very few players have been able to do.

...celebrate duanes life!
duane is my greatest inspiration for playing guitar and he taught me to play the blues.
Had Duane lived, we probably would have never heard of Derek Trucks, or Warren Haynes.
Just think, Duane only had a little over 2 years of slide playing before he moved on. 2 years. I hear constantly that Derek is the best ever, Sonny is the best ever, Warren is the best ever.
Damn right they are good.
But, do they have this.
1. Fillmore East - Voted over the past 30 years as THE best live album ever.
2. Layla - Do you need to say more?
In a touch over 2 years? All those guys have worked a lifetime, and not achieved what he did in a little more than 2 years..
Duane created a genre of music, actually, he created a whole new way of life to Americana. Southern rock, albeit, they never liked that moniker. They were all just musicians from the south. But that blend of jazz, blues and rock, with country was all new then.
Created a whole new way of thinking about music. Think of the magnitude that possesses.
Duane was a musical genius, along with working with Aretha, Boz, Otis, Johnny Jenkins, King Curtis and more.
And people want to keep putting Derek and Warren in the same sentence as Duane. Both those guys know. Anyone that has picked up a slide and played, is a disciple of Duane. And the best ones out there today, will tell you just that, and understand the brilliance of what he accomplished in his short time on this earth.

Duane transcended the guitar stuff. His sole shined through in a pure way, with guitar serving as a willing medium.
