Here's one! I've been a fan for a few years now, his playing really speaks to me like few others can, I really love his style. Tell us more about the show you went to, what songs were played, etc.

Every once in a while, a Frank Marino thread pops up and i'm in on every one! He's right up there as my biggest influence.

He's got a rep as a pentatonic shredder, and that is true, but he'll bust out blues and jazz that most critics will appreciate.

Heres his website. The forum has an "ask Frank" section and he answers your questions!

Pretty cool to be able to talk to a monster player like him.

I've seen him many times. Not for 20 years or so unfortunately.

He's a remarkable player... Very versatile...
As for the Hendrix comparisons, I'd say his (esp. early) writing is more influenced by Jimi than his playing. Claims his biggest influence was John Cipollina/Quicksilver Messenger Service.
Frank is very proficient and has his own style/sound...

The first time I saw him, which was 1976 or 1977, he did a straight Hendrix show. Nothing original that I recall. Star Spangled Banner, Red House, Purple Haze, Johnny B. Goode. Don't remember the others.

There are a couple of songs where if you listen to the lyrics, he pretty much claims he is Hendrix. He doesn't sound much like him to me, although he can if he wants to.

Sure, the early material and marketing (something he regrets) were Jimi-inspired. And - you're right - he can respectfully recreate the Hendrix vibe well...
That said, he has a strong/original voice on the guitar that is mos def his own thing...

Folks that write off Frank as a pentatonic shredder, haven't spent much time listening to him. He plays all kinds of jazzy lines, modes, arpeggios, along with great blues and rock stuff too. He utilizes a lot of very nice chord voicings in his playing as well, which are far beyond your typical rock fare.
When you combine this with his atmospheric/psychadelic playing, it makes for a very enjoyable mix(to me anyhow).

I love Frank Marino!!! I have been a fan since the mid 70's. I have seen him more than 10 times...it is always a treat. I even met him once, briefly. Frank has said in interviews that he has Stratocaster pickups on his SG's.

What's always impressed me besides his incredible live skills is his early studio work. The first few albums he pretty much recreates all the Hendrix studio tricks, but then he moved on and did things I've never really heard before or since. A lot of his earlier work I wouldn't have any idea how to go about getting a guitar to sound like that. Requiem for a Sinner is a good example of what I'm talking about. Even more impressive when you think how young he was when he recorded it. I'd love to here more about the recording process of his earlier stuff.

His live shows while the sound is different are similar in that they're part music and part magic. His guitar does things that the guitars of us mere mortals just don't do.

My brother builds guitars. One day he says "you gotta come over and check this one out, it sounds pretty special". So I fly over and he's got an all mahogany, neck thru SG type... but with a strat pickup configuration on a custom made pickgard. He winds his own pickups too and this really was a very special sounding guitar. He figured he was on to somthing new and ground breaking. I hated to tell him that Frank has been sporting a similar model for a while. I really wanted to buy it but I was short on cash. Some dude from Austin bought it. My wife tricked it out with a carved leather pickgaurd. (shes a leather carving artist). That will be my next axe when I can afford it!

My first real Concert was a multi line up show. Angel, Humble Pie, Mother Finest and Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush as the headliners. This was back in the late 70s.
Frank was absolutely amazing. (still is I here)

He still plays HBs too. When I saw him last year, he used to SGs(one with Singles, one with HBs), as well as his custom made SG replica.

just as proudly a "Mahogany Rush Freak" as a "Rush Freak" here. LOVE Franks playing and learned a ton trying to cop his solos.

I picked up a double live cd a couple of years ago that was recorded in Toronto, I think, it is like a freaking clinic, Excellent. I've been trying to do his tune "Ordinary Man", but I sound pretty pale.
