What are you willing to stand on (In)line for?

The reason I ask is all these nincompoops standing on line for 7 hours for the newest Blackberry. It's phone, they'll make more.

Aside from concert or show tickets for a one time thing, i wont stand on line for anything.

I usually stand "in" line. I'm a non-conformist.

Me too. I don't stand "on" line, I stand "in" line.

I think standing "on" line is a New York thing. My wife stands "on" line, too. It's one of those things we butt heads about. Like sticking a straw in a can of soda...or a small carton of OJ. Where I come from, you wouldn't be caught dead drinking one of those from a straw. But in NY, I guess it's the norm.:dunno

Never heard standing 'on' line, lines are something you get into. Where is the region that uses 'on'? Yinz

I also stand IN line (both in Iowa and in Texas), but not unless I have to. I hate long lines. In the UK they have a queue instead of a line to stand in.

The Northeast, if I'm not mistaken.

To get back to the original question...I'll stand in line for a concert or movie that I really care about. Any kind of consumer goods, no way.

I've heard of standing on line, but we stand in line here in Ohio. Either way makes sense. Should we get into soda vs. pop next? :-)

Early adopters. That's what they're called. I'm not one of them. I buy last year's model. When it comes to vanity I think of the lyric.....it doesn't mean that much to me....to mean that much to you.

I would stand in line for concert tickets if it still helped. Used to camp out in front of Buzzard's Nest for them.

Funny you should ask since just today I walked out of a store because the lines at the check out counter were too long for my liking. It's clear that this store decided not to hire any additional staff for the holiday season and now they don't have enough cashiers working. This cost them a sale as I was going to drop $14.99 on some new underwear. I'm not sure yet who lost in this situation.

I did the very same thing with a cart full of groceries. They build a store with 30 checkout aisles and have 5 open, each with 5+ people in line.

My grocer is good about that. Best Buy, on the other hand, will have a line with about 80 people in it at the holidays, and have 4 lanes open, with about 20 they could use. Any time I go in there, I first check the lines. If they are backed up, I just leave then.

I don't like to stand in line for anything usually. To get into the concert/ballgame OK but not for long or I'm on edge. Restaurants-absolutely not. Can't think of much anything else I would stand in line for. The last time actually was to get tickets to see Barack Obama in my little bitty town. Stood in line in the hot sun for more than 3 hours. Really rediculous as it was completely unnecessary and could have been handled another way--actually i'm pretty sure it was done the way it was so that there would be a long line which would be PERFECT for the cameras.

I managed the front end of a grocery store when I was like 20 years old. It was the 2nd worst job in history. I quit after 3 months.

It was funny though..You would see somebody walking aimlessly about the store for 2 hours, reading every label, going down the same aisle for the 6th time, reading all the paperbacks and magazines, being the very model of inefficiency...but when it was time to check out, they would be the most impatient person in the world if they had to wait more than 2 minutes to get checked out.

Personally, I hate standing in line. I try not to go out to eat on Friday or Saturday nights because I won't wait for a table. I'd rather drive around to 6 restaurants than stand outside of one for 30 minutes with a flasher in my hand.

So their "nincompoops" for getting what they want when it is of no consequence or infringement to anyone else.
OK.
This matters why....

That pisses me off pretty bad. The local Evil-Mart has thirty checkout statins, but I've never seen more than seven checkers at any time. I'm normally forced to use the auto checkout, speaking fo which, I think you should get a discount on your whole purchase for using one of those. For one, you're doing something that someone else should be getting paid to do and two their harder than hell to use.

Standing "On line" must be a downstate NY thing-us Upstate NY/Rochester dumbasses stand "in line".

Actually there aren't many things I'll stand in line for.I try to avoid it by shopping at off peak times. I did stand in line yesterday for first chair at our local ski resort on opening day though................all a matter of priorities!

I think the standing "on" line thing came from those who passed through Ellis Island when immigrating here. There were colored lines for them to follow while being processed.

Why do stores build 15 check out stations to begin with.....there are never
more than 3 open...EVER.

When I was working in a college town in a pizzeria run by 1st generation greek immigrants and their kin, instead of 'shutting off' the lights, we 'closed the lights'. Cracked me up the first time I heard it, and dang, wouldn't you know, I actually started using it too.
