I really dig BB, but when I think of his playing I think more bold and brassy, with that great vibrato, as opposed to the subtlety and texture that characterizes Knopfler's playing. Admittedly I'm much more familiar with Knopfler's music than BB's, so I'm open to being corrected.

That's funny, the first person I thought of when I read the title of this thread was . . . Mark Knopfler. I enjoy many guitarists, but his touch just gets me every time.

For me Mike Bloomfield is the king of "touch". The tones he coaxed from his guitars and amps was remarkable and never duplicated.

And I'll third Hinds ...
He just blows my mind .. his touch and playing that is ..
Have you ever noticed his left fretting hand grip ...
that he often rests the bottom of his palm on & lining the fretboard ...
It just doesn't hang loose as much as the rest of us always do ..
Sort of function like pivotal point for his legato style

Someone that hasn't been mentioned yet is Steve Vai...I know there are a lot of people that don't like his music or his tone, but you have to respect the fact that he has complete control over his instrument. The way he coaxes those wild sounds out of his guitar perfectly whenever he wants to still blows my mind.

I don't own any albums. I don't listen to him much, but when I hear him I can't believe it.

Another nod tp Mark Knopfler, immediately came to mind.
I need to mention Mikael Akerveldt from Opeth. Not a lot of guys go from massively heavy to delicate and light and back like he does. Slides nice acoustic stuff in as well.
