Some of you chastised me for spending "stoopit" amounts of time and energy regarding my overpacking [what I call "care"] and double boxing of amp heads..

Those are the wierd, one-off situations that I pack for. Say what you want about spending "silly amounts of time and energy" packing, the person I dealt with, I am sure, does not think so.

LOL! I did not mean for this to be for the purpose of tooting my own horn, I just wanted to say to the naysayers/doubters/overpacking haters....
IN YOUR :boxerFACE!!!:boxer
No, I am joking. Just that I find it better to spend a little extra time and energy preparing.

I shall remember this, when seeking to buy amps through the mail.

I have received 2 amps damaged with what I would call decent packaging. Overpack away!
I've had two amps shipped to me. One came with a knocked off filter cap. The other came with a punctured speaker. Both I have no doubt happened via shipping. I'll buy/sell amps locally from now on!

Once, I received a '70 Marshall Super PA rolled up like a burrito in a flat piece of cardboard. Little squares [3"x4"] of foam at each of the 6 sides. :AOK

Have you really gotten a hard time from folks for overpacking?
Sheesh...
Your post brings up a good point. When one ships an amp, it isn't just jarring and crushing that can make problems, it is also fluids etc, that can seep into the package as did here. Might be a good idea to use a large trash bag, and seal the amp in it first before the rest of the packing.
Want to be really pro, save all those silica bags you get with electronic gear and throw them in too!

I always "over pack" when I sell gear. My customers love that.
Overpacking is awesome!! It's a project when I pack amps..
I had one guy email me to say "I have unpacked most of it, I will finish it tomorrow". Uh.. oops.. Ok maybe I over-did-it just a little!
Pack away Michael.e!

I've been guilty of over and under packing mailed goods. I go for the 'project overpack' approach now :AOK

Man, good for you for doing the right thing and packing properly. Some might call it overpacking, but you can never be too careful with some of the apes they have handling stuff at UPS and FedEx.
I am a firm believer in what I refer to as the 'Double Bubble' rule. Generously bubble wrap the item, box it (if it's a pedal or something similar that would be the original box it came in), bubble wrap THAT, and then box that (a fairly new, sturdy cardboard box with enough extra room to account for the extra bubble wrap). Tape generously, covering any and all seams that could break loose in shipping, and send away.
Even then I STILL worry. It's an OCD complex of the highest caliber but I don't trust UPS or FedEx.

m.e.,I believe when gear is involved,I pack like it has to withstand a 15 foot drop.or WWIII.

Good practice-- the last thing you want is someone annoyed at you because they received some delicate piece of gear that worked when you shipped it, but doesn't work when they receive it!

I appreciate overpacking and do the same, multiple cardboard layers, peanuts, lots of tape.

NOthing wrong with helping a fellow gear pager get what they paid for, and avoiding all the hassles that come with damaged gear.
I would buy from you any time, and you would get the same high level packing from me! Here's to more guys like you!

I have a friend who recently started with UPS. One of her first days she mentioned a package had leaked. Couple days later she said it was body fluid from a head of an animal being sent to a lab to check for rabies. Not sure I'll ship anything anymore, ever!

While it's a good idea to over pack the perimeter of an item, you also have to keep in mind that things like speakers and transformers contain a lot of potential inertia which can rip them from their mounting if the carton is dropped. When shipping an amp I try to pack it in such a way to minimize the movement of the transformers & speakers if the carton is dropped. You have to assume that the carton WILL be dropped from 10 feet on to a slab of concrete and pack accordingly.

VaughnC I also pride myself on how I pack for shipping. I'll stuff styrofoam between trannies and the headshell to minimize shock and inertia ripping it out of the chassis.
What do you do to protect speakers?
Thx,
Jim
What do you do to protect speakers?
Jim
I've made a point to cut two pieces of corrugated cardboard to fit just inside the speaker grill's cab, to protect the grill and the speakers. It won't protect against a forklift puncture but it may save the front of the amp from lesser abuse.
Great reminder: Whether it's a guitar, and amp, or a pedal... take a couple of black plastic garbage bags and wrap the goods before boxing. You never know what fluids may leak onto your box during shipping!
An overpacker,

Some of you chastised me for spending "stoopit" amounts of time and energy regarding my overpacking [what I call "care"] and double boxing of amp heads..
Read on....
"Hi Michael,
I just wanted to let you know the amp arrived in great shape and I’m very happy, thank you! Thanks also for packing it so well—when the FedEx guy arrived at the door, he started out by saying “uh, I think we have a problem.” Apparently somebody else packed some chemicals (including brake fluid) which shattered inside it’s box and spread chemicals all over everybody else’s packages. The FedEx guy waited while I opened it and luckily there wasn’t a single drop of fluid that made it through to the amp, thank goodness! Between the double box and ample packing tape at the seams, everything inside was protected.
I tested the amp out briefly through a set of Sheffield speakers and it sounded great. I have an Avatar cabinet arriving any day with a set of Vintage 30’s so that should totally rock. Feel free to use me as a reference on TGP if you want, I’m totally satisfied. Thanks again for a great head.
Cheers!"

I've received an amp that was bullet proof packed from you- and I am a BELIEVER for sure!!!
You, good sir......TOTALLY ROCK! :dude I'd buy from you ANY day of the week!
Anyone that would complain about your packaging must have way too much time on their hands or more money than sense.....
It shows the care you have for your equipment as well- I'd say if you pack it that well, you must have taken great care of it while it was in your possesion too.

I've worked in shipping and receiving for over fifteen years, I've dealt with UPS, Fed Ex, DHL and all the major freight carriers. I can tell you from experience, ALWAYS OVER PACK!!!! The people who chastised you for doing so don't know what they are talking about. I've seen so much stuff destroyed that had "adequate" packing, sorry but "just right" doesn't cut it, especially with fragile items like musical instruments. Good for you, you did the right thing and I wish everyone put as much time and effort into packing their items, it would save a lot of time and headaches in the end.
Cheers,

that amp does not look like dove tail joints were employed during manufacture
and over packing
i dont think there is such a thing
it took two claims being denied for damaged electronic gear due to incorrect packaging that convinced me of that
and these were not amps, but both had substantial xformers ripped from their mounting plates and then rolling around for the rest of the ride inside the metal cabinets, basically ripping all components from their stations
it was an expensive mess
$20 of packaging goes a long way to protect the goods
