Could this be the official, true-life image of the new Porsche Panamera? Yes, according to Dutch publication AutoTelegraaf. A Monday embargo on the images and possibly details has supposedly been broken by Auto Motor und Sport and more details should be available this Sunday night.
Panamera is a four-door coupe from Porsche that is aimed to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz CLS, the upcoming Audi A7 2+2, BMW CS concept-based 2+2 coupe and Aston Martin Rapide. It's a hefty customer this Panamera, measuring 16.3ft (4.97 metres) long, 6.3ft (1.9m) wide and 4.66ft (1.4m) tall. The wheelbase is quantified at 9.6ft (2.9m). Curb mass approaches two tonnes.
As a package it will feature the most advanced and passenger-car focused technologies, such as an electronic air suspension, PDK gearbox, an LSD for good traction, and current interior comforts. The Porsche Panamera is obviously a Porsche, which means no sparing of thought when it comes to engine power.
Initially the two variants available will be an S model and a Turbo, the former kicking out 400bhp (300kW) from its 4.8-litre V8 and the Turbo launching upwards of 500bhp (373kW), thanks to a twin-turbo system running through its gut. V6 petrol power should join the two later, packing around 300bhp (223kW), while hybrid power comes at a later stage. If Porsche terminology is anything to go by we can also expect Turbo S models too worth over 600bhp (447kW). Although diesels have been ruled out, there cannot be 100 percent certainty on the issue; Porsche did once say the Cayenne would not offer diesel as an option. Today it's a different story.
An estimated 20,000 units are planned for sale at the start, with production going on to 50,000 per year depending on demand. Sales of Panamera begin in the US, Europe and Asia in 2009.

I........I like it. If you had described to me the concept I would have said no way. But seeing the pics, I have to say it's pretty cool. No, it's not a 911. But I think it will do very well in it's intended market. j
I hope the Porsche mechanics can find the engine.
And it's still available with a stick, right?

That side-strake thing looks very un-Porschelike to me.
The wheels look smallish in the wheelwells. Im sure 20's will be an option, though.
Overall, I'm not really into it. I'm not sure that Porsche really needs to be in this market segment. Its pretty crowded already and there are better looking vehicles out there.
I think the Cayenne was something they had to do because there were so many luxury SUV's hitting the market (and people were buying them), but I'm not sure how many people who can afford Porsches' really want it in a sedan form-factor. We'll see, I guess.
My prediction is that it'll be joining the 944 and 928 in the ranks of unloved Porsches

Despite the somewhat generic look (a la Maserati etc) I could live with that because I would tend to use it more than a two door coupe (Yep I know I'm getting old) like driving young Dave Orban to New York every day........

If it is a slippery slope, the Cayenne was the bottom of it - hatchbacks are much more space efficient than SUV's. For a "bigger" Porsche, I say it's a big step in the right direction!

I don't have a problem with either, I think they're both good looking cars, and they drive great (I've driven one of each at some point or another), but I was referring more to the fact that neither were ever embraced by Porsche purists, (because of being front-engined and not having boxer motors, etc)

I think they're badass, but the Porsche faithful spurned them, which led to the model being killed off. To me, it's hard to complain about a rear drive sports car with a Porsche-designed V8 in it, but I guess people did.

The main thing, as I understand it, is that Porsche is a niche car manufacturer that has no outside ownership, which is a pretty rare thing. They have to keep making profitable models to avoid being swallowed up by some larger car company like many other specialty marques have.
If that happened it would surely result in them having to build vehicles using shared platforms or parts, and they don't want that anymore than Porsche enthusiasts would, so they're branching out and building different types of vehicles. I just don't know if this particular one is going to be a hit for them.

OK, pretty cool. In case you folks don't know it, Porsche is CASH flush! The Cayenne was going to be a HUGE mistake-WRONG! Drives like a Porsche with 4 doors, comfortable and carries kids and stuff(for me guitars and amps home from store or to UPS to ship) and goes through mud, snow shit etc. I sold 'em for 15 years and used to borrow 911 cabs etc for the weekends for fun, when my demo was a Cayenne, I didn't feel the need for a "fun" car-I already had it. I drove several Cayennes including a Turbo S with 500+hp. If you havn't checked one out, then shut up. The air cooled comments are outdated(althoug 993s are way cool), they got all the hp they could that way, now more hp, waaaay less emissions. People used to come in and ask "does VW own Porsche?"...Porsche owns as much of VW as the German govt. will allow. No bailout needed.

Porsche reveals official details of the four-door Panamera Gran Turismo :boxer
Almost three quarters of a year before the real market opening Porsche has made available the first certified images of the Panamera in its ultimate appearance. In its design, shape and outline Porsche’s exceptional four-seater is obviously a new member of the Porsche series.
Envisage and created as a four-door grand touring sports vehicle, the Panamera mixes many abilities in characteristic Porsche fashion: sporting driving dynamics, a liberal and changeable inside, and the absolute driving ease of a Gran Turismo. Panamera is Porsche’s fourth model series to join the 911, Boxster and Cayman sports cars as well as the sporty SUV Cayenne.
The creators of the Panamera have done well in locating this exceptional vehicle as a all-new and justly different version but at the same time maintaining the appearance of a typical Porsche. Through its size alone, the Panamera clearly stand out its market category. It measures 1931 mm or 76.0 inches in width, the Panamera is broader, and measuring 1418 mm or 55.8 inches in height, is lower than equivalent four-door versions. The clearly identifiable, smooth GT profile is produced by the car’s total length of 4970 mm or 195.7 inches and brief, sporting overhangs front and back. In its styling and details, the Panamera keeps the design philosophy polished over years on the 911 and effectively applied also on the Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne.
The Panamera is expected to start a new segment against its rivals through design language alone. The interdependence of sports car DNA taken from the appearance of a coupé, the distinct understanding of the conventional saloon body and the benefits of a changeable space concept provide the new Porsche its really distinctive look. As an illustration, the Panamera is fitted with extremely individual, powerfully curved air intakes rather than the usual radiator grill. Arresting wheel arches and the long and smooth hood generate that distinctive 911 “landscape” at the front part of the vehicle which has been appreciated for more than 45 years by Porsche buyers, with the particularly curved wings as flanks adjoining the flat front cover. The V-shaped seams along the hood and the tapering out of the rear window like an arrowhead toward the back express the highlighted traits of a sports car to the fresh, totally unique Panamera class. The attractive, beefy shoulders over the rear wheels, the active sweep of the coupe-like roof line, and the obvious tailpipes likewise demonstrate all the DNA so natural to a pure Porsche.
The graceful roof curve extend elegantly over the liberal interior, simply enticing the observer to get inside. Similar to all Porsche versions, the Panamera leans toward the requirements and desires of the driver. However, because of the latest concept of space and the sporting structure of the inside, the passengers can also experience this unique driver sensation on all four seats. Superior ergonomic comfort is enjoyed by everyone in the Panamera on both the front seats and the two firmly curved single seats at the back. The spacious trunk section accommodates all the passengers’ luggage without difficulty. The adaptable space concept with its retractable rear seat backrests provides the driver and passengers control over the luggage space individually to their personal requirements. And finally, the coupé rear door mixes superior practicability for daily use with stylish sophistication.
Porsche has designed more advanced and superior power units for the Panamera once more demonstrating all the traits characteristic of the brand, the V-engines under the hood come with 6 and 8 cylinders and vary in power from 300 to 500 bhp. Turbocharger technology is utilized in some of the engines, Direct Fuel Injection creating them both fuel-efficient and powerful at the same time. The flow of energy to the wheels is conveyed either through a manual 6-speed gearbox or the new 7-speed Double-Clutch Gearbox, the self-styled Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK).
Besides the sporting rear-wheel drive, the top variant of the Panamera is outfitted with even more refined all-wheel drive, which is also offered as an option for the other models. As a further feature, Porsche is getting ready an especially fuel-economical variant of the Panamera that comes with a hybrid drive. More details about the engines, transmissions, performance, price tags and accessories will be revealed in the spring of 2009.
The Panamera will be manufactured at the Leipzig Plant of Porsche, where the fabrication hall is 22,000 square meters or nearly 237,000 square feet and an organizational center is presently being built. Although the motors of the Panamera are made at the Main Plant in Zuffenhausen, the pre-painted body shells will be provided by the Volkswagen Plant located in Hanover. The component parts of the Panamera will be put together at the Leipzig Plant for final delivery, with yearly sales anticipated at 20,000 units. Again, Porsche is working in conjunction with German suppliers in the manufacture of the Panamera, with nearly 70 per cent of the total value of the car generated locally. Thus, the Panamera can truly be called a car “Made in Germany.”
Scheduled to be introduced to the world in the spring of 2009, the first models of the Panamera will be available for sale worldwide in late summer of next year.

I love hearing all the Po-Boys who would never come within miles of affording one saying how much they think it sucks. I can't really afford one either, but I think it's unique, probably fast and handles great, and is a practical every day driver.

It looks like an appliance. It probably laps the Nürburgring within a second or two of the 998, and I have no doubt that they built it to drive like a real Porsche, but its absolutely soulless in pictures.
Porsche used to be one the most innovative auto makers. The 928 was an engineering marvel when it was released. Fastest production car in the world (top speed wise). And they kept revising it every few years. That car was such a breath of fresh air that this stale generic loving world didn't know what to make of it. Only now are they figuring out what a machine it really was. In 1999 I almost (and wish I did) bought an '87 928S4 with 16'000 miles on it for 12K. Back then it was just considered a weird looking old car. Now you could easily pay over 30K for it.
This abomination of a car, what a disgrace. Its just another version of the other German makers higher end cars. Let MB and BMW make the 4 door family cars. Porsche needs to get back to what it does best. This is not it. At least not to me.

I'll have to wait until I see one in person to be sure, but based on the pics I think it looks very good. Maybe a little turtle-ish around the back window. Hard to get a sense of how big it is in pictures. When I saw a BMW X6 in person (which I don't care for), I was surprised how huge it was.
I'm not a Porsche owner (and not likely to be), so I don't carry that "must be two doors" or "must be rear engine" gene. Anyone remember this one?

this is just not right! !!! :messedup ....... Porsches do NOT have 4 doors
I don't care for the bloated look :(
I like it from the rear, but from the side it just looks like a 911 that they stuck two more doors into like a stretch limo.
I'd take it though if it came like the one below with the suitcases full of hundreds.

The real question is, can you get a 4x12 in the back?
Probably not. Look at the way the lid slopes, gives the car some great lines. Unfortunately, it does have the side effect of killing about half of your boot space. Plus, look at how narrow the opening is, how high off the ground it is, and how much of a lip it has. As far as I can tell, that boot is for decoration.

$150,000! Are they f***ing crazy!? For the same money I could get an Aston Martin V8 Vantage. That doesn't even require a seconds thought. They're insane to think they'll get that much. There's no way it'll survive. I could make a list of cars at and below that price point that I'd rather own. It doesn't even make sense to be honest. It's too big and ugly to be a GT car and it's too expensive and worthless to be an estate car.
I don't like it from the B pillar on back. I'm sure it's a great car though. I just love my C2S Cab, but I would consider a "roomier" Porsche.

Hatchbacks are great for hauling guitar gear. It's the perfect gigmobile.
I definitely could see the average ad/hd, disorganized and broke ass musician driving one.

Great! Now I can take grandma and grandpa for a ride at 100mph!
I didn't like the Cayenne when it came out, but it's slowly growing on me.
I'm sure it'll do well in it's market. It's for all those guys who need a bigger car and cannot affort an additional one.
It was bound to happen at some point. Porsche has been playing with the idea of 4 doors for many many years.
Time will tell i guess.

It looks like a 1970's Saab.
Looks like a 4 door porsche...nothing special. I never have liked the looks of a porsche so it is par for the course with the new model.

I'll take the Maserati Quattroporte for a four door sports car myself:

(And have $20,000 left over (compared to $150,000 for the Porsche) for the 1965 Strat at Cambridge Music (for $18.9 actually).)

Best looking car ever made, hands down. I don't care that it's underpowered, bleeds coolant and steers like a canal boat. How could I when it looks like that?

The reason I posted the photos of the new Aston Martin Rapide and the Lamborghini Estoque is because this is the latest automotive trend in the highend market. Do you think Porsche was going to stand there and not offer a car in the 4 door coupe market first started by Mercedes Benz with the CLS?
