I've been hearing for a while about how amazing a guitarist Mike Landau is and that his tone his to die for, but I've never heard anything by the guy! Can someone suggest some of his music (original or session work) to listen to to get started?:phones

Mike's on the left w/ LP ?? It was a solo acoustic performance - wrong link?

Get Mike's first solo record - Tales from the Bulge

Get The Raging Honkies - maybe "We Are The Best Band"

Get Burning Water - Abamonado ( or something like that )

+1 to ultras selections. If you are ever in the L.A. area try to catch a Landau show at the Spud. (The Baked Potato in N. Hollywood-I saw him there in 2004 during NAMM weekend)

Thanks a bunch guys! Keep 'em coming. I always like to check out great new music- especially when it has killer guitar playing I can learn from.

Landau is amazing. Saw him as a backup player with Robben Ford and checked out his Myspace page. He's incredibly tasteful and plays well in a wide variety of styles. Incredible talent.

For his laid back side, his work with James Taylor is quite tasteful.

I'm just getting into Landau myself, but I really like "The Michael Landau Group Live":

http://www.modernguitars.com/archives/002549.html

And I would highly recommend "Another Night at the Baked Potato" with Jazz Ministry See:

http://www.abstractlogix.com/xcart/product.php?productid=21354

Truly an exceptional 2 sets of music. Powerful, moving stuff. Greg Mathieson on keys, Mike on guitar, and the Laboriel father/son team on bass and drums. The guitar playing is amazing, but in a way that's kind of incidental. These guys just make beautiful music together.

If you really want to experience what he can do with a guitar, then do yourself a favor and go see him live sometime.

I always thought he was good until I saw him live at The Baked Potato during NAMM about 8 or 9 years ago... then I thought he was the best player I'd ever gotten the pleasure to hear live.

Tales from the Bulge is THE Landau recording!

Just saw him live at the Baked Potato last January during NAMM, with The Jazz Ministry - AWESOME! One of the best shows I've ever
been to. Landau's tone was warm and tasty! He played a Strat with Surh pup's, and an SG, into a newer Badger prototype with an old Marshall 4x12. He had a small pedal board with Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe, Voodoo 1, a Maxon Overdrive, huge Boss Volume, RMC Wizard Wah (red), an Arion Stereo Chorus, and Boss TU-12 Tuner. I think he had a couple rack mount reverb and delay units off to the side.

Met him after the show, and he was super-nice and friendly. Abe Sr. was full of love for all, and Jr. the same. Didn't talk to Greg M., but he seemed
like another nice guy.

Mike's definitely got a great touch and plays with a lot of taste. There's a pretty interesting interview with him in Performing Musician this month, includes a good discussion on his gear. It's online here...

OK, let's do this again!!!!

For some essential Landau, I will offer again the download of a really good DVD shot at his gig in Verviers, Belgium in 2007. The footage and audio quality are excellent with many close ups of his hands so you can steal his licks.

You will have to use an FTP client to get the ISO-file.

I don't digg instrumental music that much, so I have to say the best record with Landau is the Live album with James Taylor.

This is awesome thanks!! However, when I log on with smartftp it is showing an empty directory :dunno

I have only just started to get in to Landau. I have Matt Bissonnette album on which he plays on a couple of tracks - what a player!!

edit...it is Gregg Bissonette's album Submarine. Landau is only on one track - Sasquatch - but it is killer. I thought he was on a few more - but no.

Saw Landau 2 days in a row last year (Verviers-Zoetermeer) and twice this year (Verviers-Cologne). Yes I'm THAT nuts :D

The Spirit Of 66 is one of the best clubs in Europe, the sound is always amazing in that place. I have seen a bunch of killer gigs there, just this year saw Robben Ford and Robin Trower amongst others. Will be there soon for Poppa Chubby. Let me know if you ever plan to go there and we can meet up and grab a couple of beers. Landau is coming back for another tour next year
