View Full Version : Who here tips the toll booth workers?

I noticed this to be a trend lately ..... people stop at toll booths and give what appears to be rather generous tips. http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/confused.gif
.... then there are other people who are cheapskates who drive through on another lane and don't even bother to stop. http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/redface.gif
I wonder how far this tipping thing is going to go? http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/confused.gif
....... I was at Chipotles this weekend and they have a tip jar out by the cash register. I also went to a Gyro place for a pickup order and they have a tip jar out. http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/idn_smilie.gif
I wonder if we'll start seeing tip jars at the bank tellers? .... at airline baggage checks? ... at your insurance agent or financial advisors office? ..... at the Doctor's office and so on? http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/frown.gif

I don't see the point of tipping at a toll booth at all.
One of the local rib/BBQ chains now adds a gratuity to all take out orders. I stopped patronizing them for take-out.

I've been known to throw things at the toll booth attendants as I drive by, but it's definitely no tip.

If they are "personalizing a part of their job specifically for me", then I tip.
I find that rule fits most all situations in which tipping is appropriate.
In the case of a toll worker - no.
In the case of me being picky at Chipotle - yes.

At least here in PA, the toll booth workers are union and get a ton of money to just sit there all day. No need to tip them

Just wait, as soon as the state sees money come pouring in from tolls, you will see roads becoming toll roads. I always have to make sure to have change in my car incase of a surprise toll booth because they are turning more and more roads into toll roads

lol. Thats pretty funny. PA sees no reason why it can't charge tolls on I-80 which is in terrible shape, and the PA Turnpike isn't too far behind. A dirt road would probably be smooth. They put tolls on the PA Turnpike when it opened and they were going to remove the tolls when they were paid off... then they kept the tolls to pay for mainetence which they do very little of, now they did or are going to privatize it so a company can charge us out the butt to use it.
Other places you pay tolls is to get out of New Jersey...
I hate driving in Pittsburgh because there are random spurts of toll roads that requre you to throw $0.75 in a collector and no attendent to break your $20..

i only tip at restaurants and gas station attendants that work on holidays when they should be home.
I always tell them not to smoke in bed. I think that's a great tip!

I hate Toll Booths. Every time I'm in another state that charges tolls, I tell the attendant, if they every come to Ohio, they owe me $2 and don't forget it! I especially hate PA tolls. Everywhere you go it cost you. Not only that but the toll road they charge you for is always under major construction. Every 10 miles they have a 30 mph zone on their toll road whether they are working on it or not, each zone comes equipped with a hidden radar cop. No, I don't tip.

Some toll booth workers like to short change you :) They can spot weary drivers on vacation :bong who may pay with a $20 and get change back from the worker for a $10 .....:messedup I've had that happen a couple of times. It's kind of hard to turn around and make your case if you drive off and catch it a minute later. I don't tip those kind of workers.

I'm with Rattles on this, as I can't imagine a toll road in NC. There are very, very few tolls in the South. The huge influx of new residents (yankees!) mainly in the triangle area have brought many strange and scary ideas with them. Like toll roads. In Georgia the only toll road I'm aware of is in North Atlanta on GA400 that is designed to facilitate quick entry into Atlanta from the newer suburbs mainly filled with new residents (!). In Jacksonville Fl. they did away with tolls for the the bridges (at least on the ones I've driven over). There is still the Florida Turnpike which hoses those who travel down Fla. not using I95 or I75.
There is a toll road north of Baltimore (part of I95 I believe) which has been charging tolls for at least 50 years. And the road is a potholed nasty little stretch of highway. They should be ashamed. Between D.C. and Boston there must be 10-15 tolls. I can't think of any tolls between D.C. and Miami (Richmond has done away with I95 tolls). And that's a good thing!

I did it once, left em a buck as a gag.
I asked for directions, and the person was very friendly and helpful and we must have chatted for about a minute, exchanging some funny banter...she had such a good attitude, I thanked her for her time and left a buck....said "here" and as she said "what's this for", I just drove off....screaming.
It was worth it, but I have only done it the once....

I go through the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel at least once a week, round trip. We have EZ passes, you don't even see a person. It's great to just go right through and not have to wait at the booth. I pay 40 cents each way rather than the $2.00 it costs without a commuter EZ pass.

MA tolls is what he's vamping on there... They are the worst tolls in terms of selective expense for a given region - you come from west or north east of town? You're SCREWED...
They just had a story last week that they were raising tolls to $7 a pop... wtf??

In the case of roads like the New Jersey or Ohio Turnpikes I can see it. People enter the state on the Turnpike...drive through the state putting wear and tear on the road but don't stop once and thus don't spend a dime in the state. Add up thousands of motorists doing this every day and it's pretty easy to see why a toll is necessary.
But in Florida we have tolls on roads that begin and end in Florida. So in this case it's just about THE MOST RETARDED AND INEFFICIENT WAY TO COLLECT TAXES THERE IS! Think about it...instead of just building a road we now must also build toll plazas every few miles. Then we must man those toll plazas, power those toll plazas, maintain/renovate those toll plazas, etc. And then we have to devise and implement some lame 'SunPass' system where everybody has to buy a transponder and the toll plazas have to be refurbished yet again. I'm not sure I can think of a LESS efficient way to collect money for a road.
And these toll plazas every few miles are a road hazard plain and simple. And they prevent the flow of traffic.
It just doesn't get much stupider.
Tip? Here's a tip for them...no toll roads in Florida.
Challenge: I bet you that more people die from car crashes caused by toll plazas than second hand cigarette smoke. I'll bet you it's not even close.

No. I also don't put anything in the tip jar at Chipotle, Starbucks, etc. I do tip waitstaff and hair stylists, generously if they're good. And I'll throw a couple bucks at the pizza / Chinese food delivery guys if they're fast.
What I really love about toll roads is how municipalities lower speed limits and throw up traffic signals on alternate routes in order to drive more business to the toll roads. Happened here in Denver when they put E-470 in. Way to keep the public's interests at heart.

How is a car crash caused by second hand smoke
one of my favorite simple pleasures and pranks in life is to have the wifey/girlfriend or hell any other attractive woman who's travelling in a car behind you. She'll likely go through the same toll as you and I give the toll person money for two cars, "Here! I'd like to pay for her car as well... She showed me her T**S!!!"
Usually they laugh and take the money and I get to watch in the rear view as she interacts with him/her at that point. I've seen some give her the thumbs up, I've even seen one say, "you're all set lady!" while he gave her the "air guns" motion. Pretty funny.
Then later on, say at the destination infront of people, you get to tell her about what you did. It goes over really well..

Plenty of turnpikes in Oklahoma. I've never tipped, but I'll occasionally, if my money situation allows, pay for the next two or three cars behind me.
I've always had a desire to work at a toll booth. I guess it's not really work but the austerity of the job intrigues me.
