How cool would that have been if Jimi joined ELP and they became HELP? Check this out:

"Before settling on Carl Palmer, they approached Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience; Mitchell was uninterested but passed the idea to Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix, tired of his band and wanting to try something different, expressed an interest in playing with the group. The British press, after hearing about this, speculated that such a supergroup would have been called HELP, or "Hendrix, Emerson, Lake & Palmer". Due to scheduling conflicts, such plans were not immediately realised, but the initial three planned a jam session with Hendrix after their second concert at the Isle of Wight Festival (their debut being in Plymouth Guildhall six days earlier), with the possibility of him joining. Hendrix died shortly thereafter, so the three pressed on as Emerson, Lake and Palmer."

That would have been an awesome direction to hear him go in IMO. ELP were an amazing band and Jimi was just something else. What a combo that would have been. Too bad...

One of my first concerts - Madison Square Garden at 10 yo. Man it would have been great to see Jimi with the boys. HELP!

I don't know, ELP was near critical mass as it was with the egos present. I can't help but think Jimi would've pushed it over into fission. Maybe they would've gotten one killer album out.

I wonder about the veracity of this story...in an old 70's Keyboard magazine I remember Emerson recounting something similar regarding Hendrix but with his previous band The Nice.

Hendrix played his brand of rock like a jazz musician jamming.
He used inspiration, and that is why there is such a difference in some of his performances...he needed to be in the zone to do his best and when he was it was pure magic.

ELP, I loved their music back in the day (probably still would, but haven't heard it in a long while) but I recall it being very tightly controlled, very set, that it was virtuoso performance, especially the keyboards, but I don't see how Jimi could have done his thing, in that group.

But you never know...

As much as respect both Jimi and ELP...they won't fit. There would have been little sonic "room" for Jimi's guitar work in with all of Keith's organ and moog stuff. Heck, with Greg Lake singing, you don't need another voice. Lake had a HUGE set of pipes...
