We're having Thanksgiving dinner at my mother-in-law's tonight, and I'm in charge of creating a yam dish. I want to do something interesting and unconventional. Any ideas are appreciated.

Is there a difference between yams and sweet potatoes? I heard of a twice-baked sweet potato dish where you scoop out the cooked potato, mash it with bananas put it back in the skin and bake it again. I'm dying to try it sometime.

Wish I could help. We had a potluck at work last week and a Girl brought the best candied yams I've ever had. They had a sauce that tasted like pralines.

ditch the yams-- bring a pizza! (sorry man, but I'm not a yam fan...)

sweet potatos have more nutritional value than yams..my father makes a killer dish, he puts honey and brown sugar on the top of the potatos and then bakes them @ 350 till all that goodness melts together..very tasty

My favorite way to eat them is to cook them in a slow cooker and then pour maple syrup over them but that isn't very creative for a special occasion.

Go to allrecipes.com and do a search. That site NEVER lets me down.
Here's an example of a good looking recipe.

There is a recipe for Chiplotle Sweet Potato Fondue in this months Mens Health that sounds pretty good. Not quite a yam, but probably close enough.

We have them put into scooped-out orange halves and orange juice goes into the mixing/mashing of the yams. Wonderful!

This is my very favorite. It may be a little late to use today, sorry about that. Enjoy.

Whipped Sweet Potatoes and Bananas with Honey
courtesy Tyler Florence Food Network

You can roast the potatoes and bananas ahead of time, then put it all together just before serving. Then heat it up in the oven.

5 medium sweet potatoes, scrubbed
4 bananas, unpeeled
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature (I used salted butter ...)
1/4 cup honey
Kosher salt (I leave out the salt if I use salted butter)
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
1 1/2 cups pecans, chopped

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Prick the sweet potatoes all over with a fork, put them in a roasting pan and roast for 30 minutes. Toss the bananas into the pan and continue roasting for 10-15 minutes, until both the bananas and potatoes are very soft. Remove the pan from the oven but don't turn the oven off.

When the potatoes are cool enough to handle, scoop out the flesh into a large mixing bowl. Peel the bananas and add them to the bowl along with 1 stick of butter and the honey. Season with salt and beat vigorously with a wooden spoon until everything is well combined and the mixture is fluffy. Spoon into an oven-proof serving bowl and smooth the top.

In a separate mixing bowl, use your fingers to rub together the remaining stick of butter, the brown sugar, flower and pecans until the mixture is the consistency of coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the crumb mixture over the sweet potatoes and return to the oven. Cook for about 20 minutes, until the crumbs are golden. Serve hot.
