View Full Version : Do you think PRS misses the PRS Forum?

Just thinking about that the other day. I think I joined the original PRS forum in 2000 or 2001. I can't help but think that the original forum probably added significantly to the sales. It was great free publicity with little to no input from PRS, effort or money wise. I don't remember all the details exactly for its demise but I think lawyers were involved, same with the Taylor forum.
I know there is Birds & Moons, but I just don't think they have the widedspread base that the original forum had.
Mods: Feel free to delete this thread if you don't think we should go there.

I imagine PRS sold a few guitars due to the old forum. When they were smaller, I'm sure it helped.
Nowadays, I imagine the impact would be much smaller. They are pretty established 'name'.

I know that site was responsible for at least two PRS purchases by me.
If PRS contributed to its "change in format" in any way, that was probably not a smart move. I don't care how big they are, I bet they could use the business these days.

Isn't PRS coming out with amps (built by Sewell) soon? Seems to me this would be a case where they would benefit from a forum.

To answer the OP's original question: I strongly doubt it...

There still is a PRS forum.
So how is this different from the old forum?
And all this time I've been on TGP I had no idea Birds and Moons was a PRS forum.:jo:hide

No attorneys, threats, or anything like that were involved with my decision to close the PRS Forum. I was upfront about it then and will explain again. As I saw it, Paul Smith was sort of caught between what I wanted and what some folks in PRS management didn't want. For instance, I had started listing certain PRS dealers who were considered by the members to be "the best". That led other dealers to complain to PRS. Also, there were a couple of times that news leaked out on the forum from members before the majority of dealers knew about the news. I was aware that PRS was taking a bit of flak for these things. Paul NEVER asked me to close the forum. I made that decision because I knew that it would keep him from being put in the middle. It was my decision and I made it because I was unwilling to censor topics that I knew PRS wanted to keep off of the internet until the dealer network knew. I called him and we talked. He asked me why I was going to shut the forum down. I told him my reasons and he asked me if I was sure that I wanted to do this. He was and is someone that I consider to be a friend......and I wasn't going to put him in a bad position for that very reason. That's the whole story.

WOW...so I had no idea the original forum was yours, Brian. I can see you were just trying to do another good thing for musician's. Too bad that gets mucked up by people who maybe can't take the truth about their reps. Well, thanks again for offering such a great place to hang out. Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving to you!! :BEER

And I can see Paul not saying a thing about taking the original forum down.
If you haven't met him, he is absolutely one of the most top notch people you will ever meet. When I met him, I made printouts and told him about my idea to archive PRS data into an online museum (PRS Registry) to save for our kid's kids and generations to come and he looked me in the eye and said, Eddie I love it - I think it is a great idea.
He also made a video with me of him talking about my 85 pearl white (#76) - It was HIS idea to do it, and Derek St. Holmes' son filmed it - :)
Paul was laughing at me in this screengrab because I couldn't believe he actually took the time to do this. Just a great guy, and I am indeed a fan.

The old PRS Forum was a very nice place to hang out. Sure got me going on PRS guitars, most of which I still own. Would have loved to make it to some of the Maryland get togethers but its like 3000 miles or so......a long way to go for crab cakes.
Still have my forum truss rod covers on all the PRSi.....Done by Ron Thorn for the forum. Very sweet!

Birds & Moons (linked above, from TGP) is pretty much the same bunch of guys from the old PRSF that Brian Started.
Some folks have moved one, and many new one's have joined. But it is still that small, tight knit community that we used to have....

C'mon...what's the REAL story, Z.?
In my experience (and 1000's of others I can name), it WAS really friendly.
I've made friendships there that last to this day.
And our get togethers in Maryland were always awesome!
I'm a BAM'er, and still love/play PRSi. I did before I was a forumite, but they certainly fanned the flames.

Would be nice to see more of youse original prsforum'ers at the Experience PRS gatherings. They're a whole lot like the original Forum gatherings, but different. No Moose Lodge jams, but free food & drink, clinics, and hands-on demos, and much more. Fun times, those Experience weekends. And don't get me started about the not-Zilmo experience. He's no Lotus, but some mystique seems to be infectious.

Ha ha! Personally, I believe Z's banning on the newfangled PRS Forums or whatever it's called was a proactive step in anticipation of further Young mangling along the lines of the proverbial "punishment for future crimes."
