Well, if you are, then I think you will be into this band that I have recently come across and had the pleasure of seeing live. They are called Tame Impala and are from Perth in Western Australia. They appear to be quite young but already have an amazing depth to their sound, and have the 60's psych vibe down pat. Lots of fuzz/verb/delay drenched riffs and tasteful jams.

Maybe another geezer around here recalls a band, out of So-Cal, I believe, called Touch. Nothing like them before or since.

I've listened to the first song that popped up. It's like the Beatles with more fuzz, and more surf influence.

Very cool. Do they have an album out?

They have just released a self titled EP. It can be bought from their myspace site, or just search for "Tame Impala" on iTunes etc.

Are you talking about the band "Touch" that did the one album for "Coliseum" records? The original keyboard player from "The Kingsmen" (yep; "Louie - Louie") started that particular band... I always considered them to be more of a prog-rock outfit, though. The album tanked because the band didn't want to tour to support it - unbelievable!!
I still have the original "33-1/3" album somewhere, and also have a re-release of it on CD... (keep it in the glove box of my truck.) I still listen to it every few weeks, and IMO, it's a really fine record!! Musically, I would rate it as high as "In The Court of The Crimson King"... seriously. It had some very innovative production techniques for that time... (the producer named the recording process "20/20 Sound"...)

Pretty cool, though their recordings are pretty rough sounding.

I loved the 60s and my favorite psychedelic band of all time is Fever Tree, a Houston band. I saw them live in the late 60s right after their first album (imho, the only one worth buying, and a MUST HAVE for fans of original 60s Psychedelic music) came out. There's apparently no live footage that I have been able to find, but for those who might be interested in hearing one of the coolest uses of a fuzz I ever heard, Hendrix included, check out these video montages.

I love psychedelic the most . . . all the forms and genres I love have a big bite of psychedelic in them . . . even when it comes to classical, which I often find to be quite psychedelic.

From Syd to Sadies, Skip Spence, Lilys, Robyn Hitchcock, the RainParade, Opal, The Dream Syndicate(Days of Wine and Roses) etc etc . . . love it all

. . . I think a defining characteristic I love about it is the imersive aspect and intentions of the music.
I also like the 'garage aspects of psychedelia but that particular subset of psych is not as interesting as the kinda stuff above . . . mainly because it too often bleeds into 'stoner rock' and head-banging . .. which I also like but not as much

The stuff posted is pretty cool too

I think you are missing the point Scottlr - The intention of this recording (Tame Impala EP), I am sure, is to come off reasonably "authentic" sounding for the period in which they are paying homage to. They could have had slick production, as they have just signed with a major label (Modular) in which this EP was released under, but imho if they did, it wouldn't work. Take another few listens, I actually think alot of thought has gone into the production.

My favorite band with psychedelic tendencies is the Meat Puppets. Mirage is a good example of their psychedelic side.

Slightly OT, but pfflam, if you like immersive psych, check Swervedriver if you haven't. -E

I;ll check them out

BTW, I'd describe Touch as sorta honky-tonk-prog-with-a-dab-of-psych

Oh yeah . . and they sound a lot like Arthur Brown and Kingdom Come

Oh, another new neo-psychedelia band from Finland
Black Lizard And The Liquid Plastic Castles

Any Curt Boettcher fans? The Millenium/Ballroom collection has some great stuff on it. And the Nuggets box set is a requirement for any psychedelic/garage rock fan.

My friend who runs the Petsounds record store on ebay turned me on to "Inquire Within" by Sun--a great CD from the year 2000. Its influences are Harpers Bizarre, Sagittarius, and The Bobby Fuller 4.

I was there, man. The production wasn't slick like Boston, but it was recorded as best it could be back then. I'm sorry if you disagree. Listen to the Fever Tree clips I linked. THEY were recorded during that time, and NOT in a major studio.

I am missing nothing but better quality recording. These guys have the sound down pretty well, but they are overcompensating the garageband aspect IMHO. The big players in the psychedelic era weren't garage bands.

I love the good music from that style but also have a fondness for the really bad stuff too like the Electric Prunes, the Count Five(Psychotic Reaction-anyone ever dare cover that one?), and all the one hit wonders. Also loved the Boston groups at the time like the Ultimate Spinach, Beacon Street Union and others which would probably sound pretty hilarious to me now.

Tame Impala are a great band garnering some well-deserved attention here in Aus and abroad. Had the pleasure of watching them numerous times here in WA (as well as being beaten by them in a University bands comp a couple o' years back pre-name change! :D check it http://www.fasterlouder.com.au/reviews/events/6373/The-Dee-Dee-Dums-The-Four-Walls-Eddie-Lovejoy-SeventyFive-Laydown-The-Wilderness-The-45s-The-Babalas--Rosemount-Hotel-Perth-7102006.htm)

I think they are twice the band now that they were back then.

Scott it is my understanding that the EP was recorded in the band's living room, not in a major studio. While the retro "overcompensation" thing you talk about is (unfortunately) a big part of today's music, I think in this case it's not applicable...these guys aren't compensating for anything, just hitting record and playing their stuff. I don't think they're out to fit some text book definition of a "psychadelic band", simply drawing on their influences (inc, I imagine, psych, garage, pop, rock) and coming out with a fairly organic sound. Being passingly familiar with them as a band, and knowing the other projects the members are involved in around Perth, it is blindingly apparent that there is nothing retro-cool-falisified-wanking about the guys or their music/approach to it.

It's not my intention to call you out etc, and as I stated I agree completely with the "oh here we go another retro band" sentiment which is too often overplayed these days. Just passing on some thoughts from my observations here in the Perth music scene about a damn good genuine band, one that I think has the right kind of attitude to even appeal to guys who were "THERE, man!" ! :)
