View Full Version : The Smell of Desperation
The Misses and I actually went out this morning to possibly take advantage of discounts. We need a couple of book cases, so the plan was to hit the local furniture stores.
Picture sticking your hand inside a box full of mosquitoes that haven't eaten in weeks.
That's how the sales people descended upon us, probably in part because we were just about the only customers there. It was not a dignified thing to witness, we gave up after the second store.
I'm ordering off the net.
At least you're still alive to tell the tale.
It's the opposite up here...I cant drive my car more than a mile south of where I live, for all the shoppers.
It's as nuts as it ever was in my hood.

You couldn't pay me to go out to a mall or something on B Friday. No way.

I live a mile from a retail shopping center, which is between me and the highway.
I'd rather take an 8 mile round about detour to avoid that area, if I were so inclined to leave the house today.

Furniture stores are the worst for this type of sales behavior, in my recent experience...

Absolutely!! A sales man completely drove us out of a furniture store. His loss because even though we were sure that he had what we wanted we left and bought it at a competitor.

Ditto. I said to a friend who was saying he participates in this "tradition", I said "I guess I'm simply not THAT into being a consumer."

You couldn't pay me to go near a shopping center today. I'm very happy to be working.

I went to Barnes and Noble, got a cup of tea, and people watched. I find it intriguing and amusing. I love crowds, people are fascinating.

^^^I agree with that sentiment also. But you weren't out contributing to the problem, just being a spectator.

I thought you were talking about an actual odor - "DO" sort of like a kicked up version of "BO" :Devil
Actually we stopped by the new "Ocean State Job Lot" in Valatie today. Some great prices on some nice merch. No big crowd and I dropped about $70 on some good stuff.

I remember this old-pro arm-twister salesman who came to speak to our marketing class one day. He told everbody to take notes, as he was going to tell us a trade secret guaranteed to double our sales. Then he screamed as loud as he could...
"Shut up!"

...and he was dead serious too.

It may be "Black Friday" but it's also "Buy Nothing Day"
I am quite happy housesitting and buying nothing today.
I went to Barnes and Noble, got a cup of tea, and people watched.
What exactly is it that you do differently when you get your tea that makes other folks want to watch? Were you naked or something? :D:D:D

I worked retail (commissioned sales) for a while.... I know black friday is a big money making day, but I always called out that day. You really couldn't pay me to put up with that crap.
