I got a half a pound of bacon cooking up and I just got called in to drive an hour out for a seal rescue.

I can't get a break.

Dear, dear bacon, parting is such sweet sorrow.

That's odd... I had half a pound of seal cooking and just got called in for a bacon rescue. It's like parallel universes.

Hey look at the upside - if you save a seal you've earned your bacon - OK some fresh bacon - sheesh. :dunno On the other hand if it turns out bad for the seal - I hear seal steaks are very good sauteed in bacon drippings. :bow

Ahh, bummer. Just turn off the fire, and put the pan in the fridge. It'll keep OK I think. Bacon is already cooked, like ham (unless you had fresh non-smoked bacon), and frying it up just makes it crispy and delicious. You can take up from where you left off without any real harm, except that you now have to wait for it.

This little seal may or may not be around.

Good on ya, man.

Oh, I agree with TNJ, too. Go save the little guy and don't forget your camera.

Aren't seals allowed out of the water anymore?

yes, but some people wont leave them alone for some reason. we had some photos e-mailed to us and it looked like it needed further evaluation, so i was going to do that and see if it needed help and to educate the peoples. If there is something wrong with it, it will be back in the morning.

How ironic, being called to save one animal as you cook another animal for a meal.

:AOKI like guns and beer and hunting, but I am a conservationist.

This is a sincere question as is I don't live where seals are.

What causes these little Seals to get in trouble where you have to go rescue them? How many times a year do ya do that?

Well good luck to ya! I hope you get em all!

Forgive yourself if you don't, you did your best.

By the way, I think I'd give that little seal a little kick in his ass if you see him for making you leave your frying bacon!!!! UUMMMM bacon sandwiches!!!!:D

Firstly, the foundation I volunteer with is not a "tree hugger" or "animal rights" type of organization. We operate a Federally mandated program on behalf of our state. The work we do is science based and done in accordance with the laws administered by and under the guidence of NOAA and the National Marine Fisheries Service as well as US Fish and Wildlife and NYS Dept. Of Environmental Conservation.

As for the seals, sometimes they are injured, sometimes they are sick with common things that seals get sick with. Sometimes they are sick or injured as the result of human interaction. There's probably not one mile of beach here that doesn't get walked or driven on every single day, so, there's very little opportunity for nature to take it's due course.

Humans being what they are will try to take them home, let their dogs play with them/chase them, pose their kids on them for photos. All sorts of crazy things can and have happened. Our job is to investigate sightings of these critters and determine if the seal needs help or if the people need to be educated or both. Seals that meet our requirements for rehab are captured and brought to our facility for treatment. Seals that are healthy and just hanging out are observed in in certain cases relocated to a more isolated beach.

Technically, we could euthanize just about every animal we get, but by rehabillitating them and releasing them, we can tag them and further assess the wild population's overall health and range. Through our tagging program we have gained tremndous understanding of how the seals travel and what they are doing out there. Animals that die in the wild or at our facility are necropsied and provide another whole set of things to look at.

Same goes with the dolphins and turtles.

sounds like a cool job
It's a lot of fun and very interesting and sometimes it gets a little overwelming. I do it as a volunteer and sometimes put on 30-40 hours a week. The upside is you get experiences you could never get anywhere else and as i mentioned before,an endless stream of hot co-ed interns :D

We are currently in the planning stages of big operation scheduled for Sunday, but could be moved up as needed, so we are all on standby for the next 48 hours.

I got a half a pound of bacon cooking up and I just got called in to drive an hour out for a seal rescue.I think the seals smelled the bacon and decided to launch a Bones rescue.

"Dude, he's got a HALF POUND!"
"You don't think he's gonna eat the the whole thing?"
"He's not gonna be able to lift us up anymore if he keeps that up"
"Hey, Sammy, gimme your cell..."

Sean, you are on a diet, so you are cooking a 1/2 pound of bacon? Couldn't be Atkins, or you'd be cooking 2 pounds. Do tell! :D
