i haven't posted here,
in a while.
thought ya might wanna hear a few tracks from
a recent film-score score;
this is very different music/style from
"lars & the real girl", "the wackness", "anvil", "friday night lights", & etc etc etc.

they're the first 6 tracks, posted on my soundclick (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=831564) page.

enjoy, i hope!

best,
dt / spltrcl

EDIT:
when i first posted the thread, i meant to point to
the first 6 pieces, recently done.

but, here's the complete list of this random collection of pieces,
and the projects from which they're derived:

1-6: La Linea (Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia, Valerie Cruz --- rel. 2009)
7-11: Lars and the Real Girl (Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer --- 2007)
12-14: Friday Night Lights (Billy Bob Thornton, Lucas Black --- 2004)
15-18: The Order / (The Sin Eater) (Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon --- 2003)
19-22: Believe in Me (Jeff Donovan, Samantha Mathis --- 2006)
23-25: The Wackness (Ben Kingsley, Josh Peck, Famke Janssen --- 2008)

26-29: music from "prezens", my ecm release of 2007
30-31: music from "splattercell ::: OAH", my release of 2000
32: music from "prezens", my ecm release of 2007

33-34: Love Monkey (Tom Cavanaugh, Judy Greer), 2 songs from the CBS tv-show of 2000

35: music from "splattercell ::: OAH", my release of 2000

36: a little random something from my library of early 2008

Strange and weird timing. I just bought it from iTunes this very afternoon.
Great mix of sounds and emotions. I really love it. Cinema music can be so incredible bland left standing on its own merit. This certainly does not.
You have a wonderful musical mind.

I found track 4 very scary.
Great work throughout. I listened thru the first 7 and it seemed right to stop there.
Can you say what the film is called and what it's about?

You really are fantastic at creating a mood, I really enjoyed hearing these tracks. The truth is this really makes me realize how narrow minded musicians (me) can be when it comes to creating. Thank you for posting, I really did enjoy all 4 tracks, dig "Running the Line".

I spend my life writing scary lyrics and have no idea how to write scary music to go with it, or really, any kind of atmospheric music. I listen to what you do and realize there are talents that are orders of magnitude beyond the common run of us mere humans. Thanks for sharing these pieces.

Really? wow....perfect then. Intergalactic too? or just a drug cartel?
That's what I pictured when I heard the first 2 or 3, then the one with the guy's name was more introspective...like he's trying to come to terms with whatever happened or what he did, didn't do. Anyway, really cool stuff all the way around.

I'll have to look this up on "teh google".

it's still remarkable, to me,
the breadth of range, timbre & tone,
the electric guitar can offer,
in this respect;
to my ear, when orchestrating using
electric-guitar derived sounds,
there often seems to be an increase in both animation
& a certain humane "organicness" imparted that •can•
go somewhat beyond more purely synthesised tones,
in overall effect.
sometimes, anyways!

it's funny. as much as i love guitar and sonic art, i've done little in my own work to meld the two worlds. i've been pretty traditional with my use of guitar. i actually feel a little guilty about it because i know it's pure laziness that's preventing me from really diving in. not to make excuses but it's also partly the knowledge that i have so much to learn on guitar that keeps me from branching out too much...

with the tools out there now the possibilities are infinite!

splatt - I've had this on while I do my morning work here...

Things that tugged my ears - the really nice sounding guitar in "the cursed"
That piano chime I've heard in many film score (I forget the tune in the list), but I picture someone in a film realizing the simplest of things with that tune as the backdrop.. I swear I've heard it in shawshank for example...
I like the female voice in truth, beauty:beauty, truth.
falling apart has a great sounding acoustic guitar backed by that subtle singing electric.

pretty cool stuff all around.
I'd love to see this all mixed in the film.
You must be excited for this.

do you compose primarily on your guitar for scores?
it does really depend completely upon the score..... and the individual cue.

most of the orchestral material is written at piano,
or with orchestral samples.

The cues for La Linea are wonderful...even without context they evoke distinct moods and make me want to see the film. Can't ask for more than that (and as a former film editor and semiotics nut, I have thought and worked a lot about the effect of music/sounds on visual images and the meanings created).

Your range and and tonal palette is a source of consistent awe and inspiration. Even with so much diversity, everything sounds authentic. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed the funk bass ostinado and Mecha-Morricone vibe of #4. I also really enjoyed the haunting soundscapes on #5 and as earlier hinted at in #3's shorter cue. These tracks should be a real treat to hear surround mixed in a theater next year.

thanks soooo much for that beautiful compliment;
it struck a beautiful chord, here.....
ignoring a commentarial, "post-modernist" & even remotely cynical position

Hey D,

Great textures, really enjoyed the ambience of the pieces. It is easy to get caught up in what is easy but while things sound familiar (many composers work with similar tools as you know) the pieces still sound totally original. I have recently been pulling myself away from orchestral stuff and writing more "sound design" stuff. I have found out what you of course already know, the guitar is more organic sounding than synths and has become the focus of much of my current direction. Thanks for showing the way.

Late to the listening party here, fantabulous stuff! And not only the soundtrack music either, I'm diggin on the Splattercell tuneage as well. Well, ALL of it!:banana

I really like the Mini 12 (and the oud too)!!!! Been getting into 12 string again myself, there's a lot of untapped or not very frequently visited tones in there (with a crunchin 18 watter? wow!!! Talk about fat...). Tuning the courses in 5ths is a neat trick, ala Metheny. Now if someone made a 12 with a locking tuning system.......mmmm........

A quick question, is Door X still available anywhere (or maye back in print soon)? Only had a cassette copy which self destructed a few years back, love to hear it again........

Needless to say, this is all awesome!!!!

One thing I was thinking last night was how much of an inspiration it is to hear this.

You're clearly a musician with a very distinct voice- and despite how "out" some of the sounds and textures you create are, it is being heard by a very wide audience- without compromising your own artistic voice.

It's very very cool.

splatt,

I've been on a bit of a recording GAS phase lately.

Would you mind going into some of the recording gear you use (mics, converters, compressors, etc) ?

Hey Mr. Splatt,

This was a fantastic journey to do some work to over the weekend! I often have a very difficult time listening to good music and focusing on anything else brain-intensive, but this dropped me into a very productive trance. I really found myself captivated by how the themes expressed on the acoustic instruments fit so tightly into the electronic textures. It sounded like very meaningful connection that, when heard in context of the film narrative, will glue it together. I really found myself trying to synthesize a storyline as so many things are being suggested like seeing the shadows of boxers - or some great moral struggle unfold. Fantasitco!

Man, this is such a treat, David. I'm gonna be listenin to this for a few weeks during my stretching exercises

Very cool to look at tones IN LIGHT OF overall composition mastery and not the other way around

I am sure you get asked these questions alot (if not already within the 5 pages of this thread)

"Do you watch the video to what the music is going to be composed for?"

Or

"Do the directors say that they want a certain mood, etc . . . "

I have many more questions about some of these pieces, but I don't wanna bum rush ya too much :)

I am sure you get asked these questions alot (if not already within the 5 pages of this thread)

"Do you watch the video to what the music is going to be composed for?"
although on each film the approach is different,
the main answer would be:
yes, i do; with the dialog & sound-fx present & audible.

on this film, there were quite a few scenes scored wherein
there was little-to-none dialog (and some scenes that, additionally, with little-to-none sound-fx, so.....)

typically, i'll form all basic & finishing musical ideas
to-picture; there's also a period, for most pieces,
where i'm working on the music separately from picture.....
..... but, of course, always return to it, eventually.

but, some key ideas are initially conceived away from picture:
often, lately,
i've taken to working on pieces out of the studio, completely,
away from instruments.

"Do the directors say that they want a certain mood, etc . . . "

this is usually the case,
which can be invigorating
(when the director has a clear
vision for both the music & its direction
& its critical development-arc),
or..... it can be really, really daunting,
when the director has little vision/clue/background/education/experience-with
how score might best serve his/her film.

since music is already an ineffable medium
--- witness the variations of opinion, meaning & verbal definitions thereof, here on TGP
(where everyone is already in some way musically oriented) ---
in many cases, a film composer will be working towards
what he/she believes the director wants & needs,
often based upon sketchy or incompleted communication,
& not upon much the specifics of either
emotional and/or musical information:
that kinda describes the gig, a little.

on La Linea --- those first 6 tracks, there ---
i had only the already-in-place "temporary score"
(which the film was edited-to)
to guide me;
which isn't much to go on, and can be mightily misleading:
i disagreed with this film's "temp", relatively often
--- its character, its tone, its placements ---
and, i'm presumably committed & bound
to deliver an original work
for the film-in-question, and that film, alone.
ha!
copying is something i simply don't & won't do;
add to which:
copying something that simply doesn't work
falls way outside my working field of effectiveness.

so.
for myself,
i generally seem to strive for the score
to look directly at and/or progressively towards
assisting to uncover (interior) character-development
& its connection to plot-points across the life of the film,
in order to feed what i see as the heart of the story:
the few broadstroke feelings that
a viewer might be meant to carry with them
from the theater, when the show is done.....
without banging them over their heads with
musically & emotionally stereotypical "meaning".....
did that make sense?
i hope so.
ha!

Actually, that's one of the most lucid explanations of a process/approach to scoring movies that I've encountered. Thanks for the insights, Dave.

Would you mind going into some of the recording gear you use (mics, converters, compressors, etc) ?
every project is a bit different,
so i'll list what stuff i was using for La Linea, ok?

acoustic instruments:
ac. veilette gryphon (hi-tuned short-scale 12-string)
ac. yaroub med. fadhel oud (7-course)
ac. harmony mandolin

mics:
Beyer M500 dual ribbon, M-Audio Sputnik (!), CAD/Equitek E300
mic-pres: Quad Eight (vintage), M-Audio Octane, Focusrite (?)

electric instruments:
d'pergo green lantern (AVCL)
teuffel niwa

amp/rack:
gtr>skreddy mayo>tc compressor>guyatone WR2>goodrich LDR2>
>VHT PittBull45, speaker out>HotPlate>
>ADA Ampulator>rack>ADAMicroCab II>
preamp for stereo rack: Quad Eight & M-Audio Octane

rack:
modified rane sm82 mixer
Echoplex Digital Pro
modified Lexicon PCM42
Lexicon PCM80

Lynx Aurora converters
Lynx AES-16 (since i did this project in Logic8, instead of PT)

i tended to use ITB compression, EQ, delays & further reverbs,
which (on this project) def included:
SoundToys (FilterFreaks, FF compressors, EchoBoy, Universal Audio (Pultec EQ, Cambridge EQ, DreamVerb), PSP (MasterEQ, VintageWarmer), Waves (Q10, RenComp, RenEQ), Reaktor (all kindsa custom reverbs), LiveCut, Ambience, PEAK Pro for editing, etc etc etc

Guitars are all direct?
yes, b;
all electric guitars were direct,
through my tried+true rig,
as listed, above.
(it was a grim necessity for me
--- no air on the elctrioc guitars, argh! ---
but, somehow,
no-one ever seems to know, unless i tell 'em.....
in fact, i struggle to remember that myself, sometimes.....
¿could be my ongoing state of denial? ::: ha!)

Everything sounds fantastic to me. The electric guitars sound great - really rich timbres.

For the acoustic instruments with pickups do you record both a mic and a pickup?

And there is some sub-bass on some of these tracks that makes my Beyer headphones really move - and I'm not listening loudly at all.

Thanks for posting these - they're my background at work now. Your stuff is gorgeous and real - my favs.

Any chance of a solo release with these sorts of ambient guitarish-textures, sort of Roach-ian style (I hesitate to make any sort of comparison)? I'll pre-order :-)

no, the acoustic instruments are only recorded
with mics.

ah!
something i clearly forgot about in the mix-chain:
a subharmonic synthesizer,
"in the box":
in this case it's a plug-in called,
aptly enough,
"Lowender".

there is a solo guitar cd planned with ECM,
and there will be an onslaught of texturalising, therein, but.....
..... it will also be partially naked,
and largely focussed upon some
expanded processing + realtime control/editing concepts
which i've been sketching out.....

Beautiful textures conjuring all sorts of images and feelings. Not got through them all yet, just letting them drift over me in the background. love the eastern influences.

Thanks so much for posting this, DT.

Truly inspirational- all of it... as you may know (from some of my previous posts), I'm looking to get into scoring music for films and all of your stuff is a *huge* inspiration to me! Long have I admired your work, kind and noble sir.

I can't wait to see the film in which this beautiful music can/will be heard.

All of your previous endeavours in 'movie music' were brilliant.

Mind if I shoot you a PM sometime this week re: scoring "and stuff"? :)

"partially naked". You mean no/minimal-overdubs (for the naked stuff)? The gear you mentioned in a previous post for these tracks sounded much like your "Painting..." setup. Sounds like you're working with some other tools?

Any thoughts on touring behind the release (think Boston)?

there are a few extremely talented filmic folks,

this will be a "live in studio" record.
as well, i've been playing more frequently
--- as contrast ---
with no substantial effects, other than a little reverb.

indeed, that is my basic rig,
minus the appearance of
the electrix repeater + the nord modular.

Sounds like you're working with some other tools?
yup!
working on some real-time laptop-based
f••k-uppery; final determinations aren't made yet,
though.....
i'm still largely conceptualising, & messing with it;
especially the "controller" aspect.....

Any thoughts on touring behind the release (think Boston)?
well..... my studio schedule is increasing,
which is insane, really.
prezens is in ireland, UK, spain, sweden, etc in april '09.
when the solo-disc is done, though,
it's likely that i will do some performances.....
..... but, i suspect the live performances
will include a drummer-friend.....
early 2010, maybe? late 2009?
dunno, yet, buy
thanks for asking,

Yeah - it would be great if responses were public and searchable, so that others with interest could benefit.

I was thinking about pinging re how you get such great mixes, and maybe even consider that as part of the "Painting... MkII" thing you're thinking about (e.g. "Painting and Recording..."), but think that might be better for a public "conversation", elsewhere, at another time (maybe the VI forum you referenced).

Wow - I look forward to this. If you're in the mood to post any snippets of this somewhere, please do! I'd love (as would everyone else here) to hear your awesomeness in that environment. Single coils, vibe-arm, clean/spanking amp (I'm making assumptions) and reverb, w/ solo improv? Send me your PayPal address :)

though i'm likely to disappear for a while,

well, it's me..... another name that some
folks use for me, given to me in my teen-years.
it was also my feeble, pointless attempt
to remain "anonymous" on SoundClick,
since that social network can become
somewhat demanding of time & effort.....
