Wow! ..... what a totally excellent documentary of the band from the early club days to the break up. I'm watching it again and forgot how good it is !
Weird little tidbits too, like in the early days, they drove across town because they heard of some guy who knew how to play the B7 chord. ..... they found him, he showed them and POW! that was the magic chord. :)
I was checking out the gear they were using back then too. Can you imagine playing a concert with a couple of Vox amps and no mikes on the drums? :messedup
Thank you, that will be all. http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/redface.gif

I have it. I have watched it numerous times. Very much fun to watch. I wish they'd have done it while Lennon was still alive. If they had, all of them would have better remembered some details :)

Their concerts were only around 20 minutes long. Nobody could hear from all the constant screaming. :bong
I think I would have felt slightly ripped off.
I noticed they eventually started sneaking a few Fender amps in there on the stage. :knitting
They smoked a joint just before they met teh Queen. :bong :bong :bong

Before this year I'd seen parts of it on VHS borrowed from a friend. I bought the DVD set earlier this year and I've seen it twice (some parts more than that). Excellent!!!1!11

George said they didn't, and that John just made that up, on The Anthology DVDs.

uhmmm I'll watch that part again, but I think they said they did and Ringo was so buzzed he didn't remember anything after it. :bong
Anyway, it's very cool. I am up to the Shea Stadium section. I think John was going a bit crazy by that point ..... he was losing it on stage. :messedup

Yea, George discounts it clearly, Something like 'we were so nervous we went into the bathroom and had a ciggie, and years later, John, trying to think of the worst thing possible, said we smoked a joint, be we never...', and then the clip of Ringo saying 'he didn't remember and he was too stoned' was edited in right afterwards and could have been in regards to anything. I've watched it about 3 dozen times, I'm such a Beatle geek. :D Oh, and the book goes into a lot more detail on certain things.

Well one thing is clear, they discovered guitar feedback and first had the idea for music videos !! !
Really, that must have been a brutal life. They were all very hard workers to have put up with all the later BS and yet produced all they did in that short time frame. :JAM

Yes indeed, and all with only 2 roadies! It's an amazing story, really. I mean, if you think about it, how rare is it for any band to go from playing dances with no drummer, to playing clubs, to getting on the bill with big name acts, to getting a recording contract and having a hit record , all within 3-5 years. Never mind what they did after that, just going from being greasy kids to the first record is pretty amazing. So many little things just all fell into place for them, and yet, they paid their dues, especially in Hamburg. I can't even imagine how they must have felt going from rags to riches like they did.

Rags to riches always made me wonder how Pete Best really feels about that...and would Beatlemania would have happened without Ringo. I saw one interview where Pete said that he had no ill feelings but, considering that he paid the dues in Hamburg, that would have to be hard to take especially with guys that were supposedly your friends. To this day, Pete says that he never got an explanation as to why he was let go. Some say it was his drumming but others feel it was based on jealousy because he attracted most of the girls at the time. Paul is the only one left who knows for sure...

Ringo was also paying the same dues, with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, in Hamburg. They picked up Pete because he was the only guy they knew with a drum kit. They needed a drummer, and he was the only choice at the time. When Ringo became friends with them, apparently there was a spark or something. They were pretty serious about trying to sound as good as they could back then, and probably regretted having Stew on bass. Perhaps they looked at Ringo as being more experienced than Pete. He was older and had been at it a little longer.

What book? I've read Harrison's Autobiography, and some Beatles books in high school.

No? No what?
He's Pete Best. He said no he's not harboring any bad feelings towards his old bandmates.

Whatever, I never did understand if a person doesn't have a contribution why they would even make the effort to post in a thread they don't care about.....
Anyway, I bought the box set shortly after it came out. Very cool.
I think having grown up listening to them plays a big part in how much you liked them. I can still remember my sister and cousins sitting in front of the black and white set screaming when they came on Ed Sullivan.
The girls also got to see them in Portland, OR in 1965.
The sound equipment was a joke. My sister said you couldn't hardly hear the music at all. The screaming was so loud!
I wasn't old enough to go at that time and by the time I was they had stopped touring.

I don't know how many people could handle something like that, but they did extremely well. I didn't realize that Paul really was the band spokesman at all the concerts, but that was a good thing. John was kind of wacked out over all the hype.
Something I think John said after arriving in America....... He thought they would have had to work a little at it to get the response they got, but it was all set in motion by Brian's promotional deals with the record companies. Brian was such a great manager.
I'm on the last chapter right now. Wow! Badfinger used Hiwatts
