...that approximately 1 in 100 people is a psychopath? To explain exactly what that means, I'll post a quote by Dr. David B. Adams:

Everyone should be wary of an individual who has glib charm, a soothing voice, a penetrating gaze, dramatic gestures, and engages in meaningless flattery and vague/inconsistent responses to personal questions. When a psychopath complains of how others treat him, it should be remembered who the real victims are likely to be.

Callous, deceitful, reckless, guiltless . . . The psychopath understands the wishes and concerns of others; he simply does not care . . . The psychopath believes that rules and morals are for other, weaker people who obey because they fear punishment . . . No matter how bright, and a psychopath is often very bright, he rarely maintains a regular job . . . he may have an ingratiating manner and superficial charm, be persuasive, poised . . . Lying, evasiveness, feigned forgetfulness, vague and inconsistent answers about his past . . .

Makes you stop and wonder, doesn't it?

For a short time I knew one of those people once (documented). He was just as described only weirder in a deeper sense. I became aware that he was capable of absolutely anything without a second thought about it. The most self-absorbed person I've ever met but still superficially congenial. Think of Hannibal Lecter. I may have been in contact with others at some point in time but he was by far the most memorable.

I just read 10 things that define a psychopath.
My ex wife scored 10 out of 10.

Write it. I'll read it. I've dated a few crazies in my day, so I can relate on some level.

Suproman77, I believe what you say has some merit to it. I can't explain what causes it, but I think the "psychosis," for lack of a better word, is repressed and gets brought out by a change in their life. A good friend of mine went off the deep end recently because some girl he dated twice dumped him. I probably would not consider him full psychopath at this point, but he's certainly more of a whack job now than he's ever been.

Others may just call it evil, and I can agree.

Hare does a great job of showing how many there are who are all around us.

I wonder what the ratio is for sales professionals?

AIG bailout leading to vacations at spas, anyone?

I got that statistic from a show on tv about this and they actually mentioned that careers in sales and high level executive positions were perfect for what they call 'functional psychotics' because they can pretty much blend in with society and yet feel no remorse from of screwing people out of money. They just don't care because they're hardwired to feel no empathy.

It's rather fascinating and also quite scary. There are some real monsters out there.

I think we may actually be talking about "sociopaths" rather than "psychopaths" here...

According to something I just read, there is no real consensus on exactly what the differences or distinctions are. They're not even really clinical terms...in the DSM IV, they both fall under the category of antisocial personality disorder.

So, I dunno, but whatever they want to call it, neither of them is a good thing. That much is certain.

See, that's what bugged me about the movie Dark Knight... I can't believe there were 300+ passengers on board the ship of civilians, and not ONE of them would push the button and kill the ship full of prisoners! Out here in the real world, there were probably at least a half-dozen people on that ship who would have been downright enthusiastic about killing a ship full of "criminals".

It's sad when a mother has to speak the words that condemn her own son. But I couldn't allow them to believe that I would commit murder. They'll put him away now as I should have years ago.

He was always bad, and in the end he intended to tell them I killed those girls and that man. As if I could do anything except just sit and stare--like one of his stuffed birds. Well, they know I can't move a finger. And I won't. I'll just sit here and be quiet, just in case they do suspect me.

They're probably watching me. Well, let them. Let them see what kind of person I am. I'm not even going to swat that fly. I hope they are watching. They'll see. They'll see, and they'll know, and they'll say... 'Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly!'
