Cranked up my Laney AOR 100 head thru my 2x12 loaded with G12K-100's. Smelt something a bit funny-electrical. I figured it was the amp so I checked it over and saw nothing. (I recently recapped it.) This was yesterday. Today I did the same thing and realised I'd smelt this before from speakers getting overheated. I bend down and sniffed the grill and yep it was coming from the speakers! The amp sounds fine and so do the speakers. The cab is rated at 200watts and the amp puts out 100. Yeah I realise it probably cranks out a good bit more than that fully cranked but enough to start cooking voice coils? Whad,ya think? Something else going on? Bob

If it was your voice coil cooking you would know right away from the distorted sound and low volume. Try each speaker alone.

Definately the speakers. You can smell it coming right from the grill. They still both work ok. Got just hot enough to put off a smell? Funny its not the first time Ive noticed this with different speakers/amp. Im wondering how much power is being made with the master cranked and the gain turned up. Its deafeningly loud -literally. bob

I've smelled similar odors coming from a 2x12 loaded with G12T-100's being pushed by my '77 JMP 2203.
I'd just re-capped/de-modded the JMP and i thought it was the head but i tried the JMP thru a 4x12 and it was fine, no odd odors, just very LOUD !!!---- the G12T-100 speakers in the 2x12 were brand new at the time and i thought i'd use the big Marshall to loosen them up a bit. I continued to play these speakers with lower powered heads to break them in but i didn't like them much even though they didn't stink up the place (literally)----took them out of this 2x12.
I also noticed this on my 4010 (2204 1x12 combo) with a new G12T-100---- same smell with amp cranked into newish speaker----after playing like this for a few minutes i felt the speaker magnet and it was very warm to the touch---- this amp now has a well used G12T-75 in it and no smells/problems.............gldtp99
