I just bought a 1978 Fender Studio Bass (amp).

Its a 15" EV ported sealed enclosure combo rated for 200 watts @ 8 ohms similar to a Dual Showman in circuitry.

It specs: 6) 6L6GC's; 2) AX7's; and a 12AU7 for the EQ.

Its currently running 6L6's though and I wonder if I need to follow spec there?

The AX's and AU are Fender "Special Design" and probably original -- anybody know who made them at that time?

I would stick with 6L6GC's in that amp. The preamp tubes are probably GE.

Those things are monsters.

Its really a nice bass amp -- the cab is a bit beat up: currently the finger upper joints are split apart and held together by a screwed on white metal bracket -- accordingly, I am building a new cab following the diemensions fairly closely since its a closed/ported 15" enclosure.

I had such a phenomenally good outcome using panels of maple and purple heart (supposed one of the most musical woods on the planet) for the sides, top and bottom for my Princeton Reverb II that I am in the process of doing the same for the Studio Bass while including a high-count birch plywood baffle instead of the particle board one that comes on the original.

With a little luck it will be done sometime next week.
