Someone told me this yesterday:
Martin guitars are the voice of Heaven and the Angels and Gibson guitars are the voice of Man and the Earth
They said it was an "old saying" but it was the first I ever heard of it.
I know they say Martin's have a Big Sound, with lots of detail and Gibson's got the thump and crunch going on--so I guess it's true.
Anyone hear of this "old expression" before?

Been playing Gibson acoustics my whole life and I have never heard anyone say this.
Sounds a bit ridiculous though, don't ya think.

The one I've heard is "A Martin is a choir, a Gibson is a family singing on the front porch."
Pretty much equally goofy.

I think martin is a salt shaker and gibson is a #2 pencil, but that's just me.

Never heard that before, been playing 35+ years.
I have one of each (D-28 & Smeck) & although I kind of agree in as far as the Martin is more shimmery & 'angelic" vs. the Gibson deeper & 'earthy' sounding, IMHO the "God vs. Man" thing is just stretching it way too far! http://forum.skype.com/style_emoticons/skype/giggle.png

I think of my martin as a banjo killer but don't have a Gibson acoustic so no comment on that one.

Probably dreamt out by someone who had nothing better to do.
