View Full Version : Does anyone else think the Gillette Fusion sucks?

It just feels like it's ripping the hair out, and taking off a layer of skin! Yes, it gives a close shave, but it's one of the most uncomfortable shaves I've ever had.
Dull, no-name disposables have given me less grief!

I just picked one up a few weeks ago (previous razor was a mach 3 turbo). I'm not sure what I think just yet, but I'm with you...it's definitely not the most comfortable shave I've ever had.
I may go back to the Mach 3...we'll see though.

I switched to the Fusion about a year ago.
I received a free sample in the mail and gave it a try.
It's the best blade type shaver I have ever used.
I use the Edge shaving gel that lathers up when you rub it on.
My only gripe is how much the refills are. Around $13 for four refills.
Sort of like inkjet printers. They give you the printer then make their fortune on the ink.
It is a very comfortable shave for me but I do realize no two faces are the same.
Another benefit of the five blade razor is how long it lasts before changing it.
Also has a single blade on the other side which is nice for trimming side burns and mustaches.

i have a fusion and love it. here's what i learned that helped me achieve awesomely smooth shaves.
buy a anti-fog suction cup mirror and put it on your shower wall
get the shower going warm and wet your face up well for a few minutes (this opens up your pores)
then lather up face with soap and let it sit there and soak for a few minutes
go about washing the rest of yourself during this time
start shaving toward the end of your shower, after your skin has been wet and moistened with the soap.
make sure you use a sharp razor and rinse the shavings out after each shave swipe
ka-pow!......smoothest shave ever.

LOL!
Then my face must be lying to me! Everytime I've used it, it's been almost excruciating!
Yeah, the smoothest/closest shave I've gotten, but the actual shave hurts like f#@*, and with other razors this hasn't been the case.

The blades "break in" well.. the first few times.. rough shave.. after that.. very nice.
Also, the shower suggestion is good, but not to the point of these razors. They take some getting used to, and don't feel great after four days of not shaving.

This is why they keep coming up with new razors every few years, so they can get past the patent period. After the patent period expires cheaper copies of the blades can come to market (like generic drugs). Then the revenue stream drops, bingo time for a new model to keep the revenue stream up.

No, this isn't right. You have a patent for 20 years, new models seem to come out every few years. Besides, simply added another blade is not considered to be non-obvious, and thus, non-patentable.

I don't think this is right either though, otherwise there would be non-Gillette blades would be available for their newest model almost immediately. Try finding a non-Gillette blade for their NEWEST model. I'd guess you can't find one. Even giving tooling up costs and time, it is always several years before you can get the "generic" brands. Thus there must be some aspect of the patent that provides protection in the first few years.

You guys need to stop shaving like little girls and get a man's razor like PRNDL. Blades, at their finest, are 25-50 cents, and shaving is actually pleasurable again. You can just enjoy the doing, rather than turning it into a task.
Yes you will need to buy some gear, but who hear is afraid of that?
New DE Razors are available (classicshaving.com, for example), you'll need to start using real shaving cream (not the crap in a can), applied with a badger brush rather than freon ejection, and you'll need to learn some technique (but again: who here...) and everything you'd want to know is at either the Badger and Blade forum, or the Shave My Face forum.
Seriously, using these multiblade razors is for little girls and transistor amp users. Get the tube amp of shaving and go back to shaving like a man. Seriously: you'll actually look forward to shaving again - my hyperbole aside.

I don't buy into more than 2 blades. More than that, and probably 2 blades as well, is just a marketing ploy to sell more blades, period. In the 70s, I used a single blade safety razor, and it shaved every bit as good as my 2 blade razors, except the blades cost twice as much, saving NOTHING. I won't buy a 3 or more blade razor. I'll find an old safety razor handle in an antique shop and buys a large quantity of blades for it before I fall for that shit.

Gotta disagree with you there Scott, Mach III's and Fusion (IMO) are far superior to twin blades. Either one works well for me, so well in fact that if the blade is new I can shave cleanly and comfortably in hot water and no shaving cream. The price sucks but I think they are both excellent.

I have an old Atra. It does the job for me. Before I got that, I used the Gillette Good News disposables. They were cheap and worked fine. A few months ago, my local grocer had all of their store brand of Atra style blades on sale for 50 cents for a package of 10! I bought all they had. By the time I run out of blades, they will have a 16 blade super duper razor out there that makes your morning coffee for you while you are shaving. :D

I'm a cheap ass on razors, I buy the 3 blade clone at Wally-Mart - Personna Super 3, about $5 for a pack of 4 disposables. I tried the free Fusion and bought the first refill with a coupon, after that, too expensive. I do use the shave soap cake and bush on occasion, usually in the summer.

I have an old Atra. It does the job for me. Before I got that, I used the Gillette Good News disposables. They were cheap and worked fine.Actually, the specific incident that made me switch was when I got new disposables (Schick green handles) and they cut my face like crazy. When time came to get more, I couldn't do it. I searched and found an unused old razor that was several years old and it was fantastic. Then I realized they must have changed something (to save money, no doubt).
Seriously, using these multiblade razors is for little girls and transistor amp users. Get the tube amp of shaving and go back to shaving like a man. Seriously: you'll actually look forward to shaving again - my hyperbole aside. You really have to try it to believe how incredible it is!
The SuperSpeed is just what the name says -- after using many disposables (Atra, Gillette Good News, Schicks), I was very careful shaving. With a good shaving soap, I could go much faster and closer.
Total costs:
Gillette SuperSpeed on the bay $15 delivered, 45 blade sampler $9, 2 bars of Arco soap $4, brush $15, lathering bowl: free (it's a cereal bowl with bears on it).
Number of nicks and cuts from shaving with a DE: 2
One time the cat just had to look at me close up.
I slipped and scraped the edge of my nose trying to get up there.
You guys need to stop shaving like little girls and get a man's razor like PRNDL.
I think if you want to talk about a "real man's" razor you'd want to mention one of these too:

I get about 40-50 shaves out of a single blade. Even at their ridiculous price of $3/blade, that's a cost of 6¢-8¢ per shave.
Because of their durability, they are really pretty affordable.

When I use blades, I don't wanna use anything but a Mach 3. Maybe something out there does work better but I find this one to work well enough that I see no need to try anything else. Now that I've really gotten used to using blades again, I don't see myself ever going back to electric either.

I have the same problem (I think). I can't shave sooner than 4 days between close shaves, and 5 is much better. I need to go more like a week between bad shaves. I always thought it was because I have slow growing facial hair.
It doesn't really matter what razor I use (even straight) although some are better than others.
Electric razors don't seem to work on my face, they just can never get close enough.

One thing that I have found. I would say I have a medium beard growth type whiskers.
I usually shave when I get out of the shower. If you try to shave without softening your whiskers with hot water it can be an agonizing experience.
The shaving cream is also important. I use the Edge Sensitive skin formula.
It really lathers well and lubricates the skin so you don't get razor burn.
Nobody ever teaches us how to shave ( at least my dad didn't) so we learn by experience what works best for us.
I shower, get out and dry off everything except my face.
I lather up using the Edge cream.
I shave downwards on my cheeks and neck.
Once I do that I shave up against the grain of growth and my face is baby smooth.
I can go the next day usually without shaving.
If I have to go out in the evening I use my electric Braun to take off the 5 o'clock shadow.

12-06-2008, 10:35 AM
Well just switching to a proper shaving cream and using a brush will get you much of the way to a good shave. Another part is that you shave RIGHT AFTER you shower, not IN the shower, and not when your face has been dry for hours. Aternatively, you do the barber shop things of the hot towels for a couple of minutes.
The key to the cream is water. water is the lubricant of shaving, the cream is designed to hold that water and keep it on your skin to lubricate the blade as it goes over. The stuff in a can won't do that. You need a shaving soap or cream and a brush to work it into a lather. Then, go ahead and use your girlie razors if you like, your shave will be 100% better.
Then if you're comfortable with that, move to using a DE razor - and you'll never look back. You'll get great comfortable shaves, with relatively inexpensive blades (I use Feathers at about 50 cents apeice), and you'll have a whole new world of gear aquisition to explore (much of it vintage!). (there is a slight learning curve however, as you will actually have to learn your own face and how the hairs on it grow, and you will will have to unlearn your skin from being treated like a ballerina)

I used to shave daily, and swore I'd never be one of those beard-wearing freaks. Never liked the idea of a "disposable" razor, though...
I have been known to shave with these:

Yeah, I'm cheap.
I'm also lazy. Now I don't shave; I just run a trimmer around my face every week or two. Take off the depth thingie to perform general shaping and neck cleanup duties. The wife talked me into growing a beard, and I haven't been barefaced since (except a couple times when I accidentally started trimming without the depth thing on... Oops :o).

My facial hair grows fast, I should shave everyday, but i'm lazy....if I let it go for 4 days, then I absolutely dread shaving...I usually use Nivea and that works ok, but I got a free sample of Jack Black's Beard Lube (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=75103&catid=25333&brand=24748&trx=GFI-0-MBS&trxp1=25333&trxp2=75103&trxp3=2&trxp4=2) at Sephora and it is the bomb....I cut through my forest as easily as just shaving stubble...

Well, today I tried the Fusion again, but as an experiment, I used ONLY the single blade on the back... most comfortable shave ever!!!
Looks like I'll be visiting "Badger and Blade" or "Shave My Face" for single blade info.

The Fusion is hands down the best blade shave I ever had. I got a freebie, tried it and use it exclusively.

I think it works great... close shave, comfy and I have a very very heavy beard. I also find that the refills last a fair amount of time, good since they are pricey (I load up at Costco).
The Mach 3 is still fine but the Fusion is def. a closer shave for me and very comfortable to use.

I use merkur safety razors now, I am never buying into that bs gillette crap again. I was buying easily $20 in blades a month. I got a nice Merkur, $50. Blades last forever. I spend maybe $10 in blades a year. I get a better shave as well. Way better shave.
Here is my Merkur

I also have this one

Made in Germany, its like the BMW of shaving seriously, but guess what it was less expensive than doing a refill gillete type of system and its a way better shave.

I will settle for this to tidy me over for a while :)

I picked one up a few months ago to pit against the schick platinum 4-blade, which I haven't tried yet.
My impression of teh Fusion is pretty lackluster. The blades wear out quicker than my old 2 blade, and I can't get a close shave in the valley between my adam's apple and my sternocleidomastoids.
I have noticed a big improvement with Neutrogena shave balm, rather than edge.

I hate the Fusion. Was using the Mach 3 for years, and never had any problems with it. I gave in to Gillette saying how great the Fusion is. The handle is awful. It's slippery as hell.

Once you get into the world of traditional double edged saftey razors, you'll wonder why you ever shaved your face with those crappy multi-blade toys.
