I think it is sad that there are some that can not respect what others value.

His original grave marker used to get regularly vandalized. It got to the point where his original grave was marked with an unmarked headstone/marker.

I went to visit Stevie's original grave site back around 1992/93, and spoke with an attendant at the cemetary. I asked if I could buy a proper headstone. The woman said, "It's not worth it. It would just get either stolen or vandalized."

WTF is with people?????

The sculptor of the statue - Ralph Helmick (http://helmicksculpture.com/) is a bud. I have not spoken to him about this.

When he did the sculpture he told me much of the story behind it & the labour of love he poured into it. Ralph also did the Fieldler memorial statue in his hometown, Boston. He told me about guys who worked in the foundry who whenever they got to work on the statue would put SRV CDs on & play really loud. Eventually Ralph gave each of the guys in the foundry things that SRV had owned - picks, etc.

One time I was in Austin - we went to look at the statue - I am 99% sure Tommy Shannon was sitting beside the statue when we walked up - he cleared out as soon as other people walked up.

It's a true bummer that someone wouldn't respect it enough.
