Does anyone know what Celestion speaker, if any,
the Man O War mimics?
I have a Mesa Lonestar 2x12 openback cab with one
stock Black Shadow, and one Emi Govenor. I was thinking of pairing the Govenor with the Man O War.
I know the Govenor is their version of the Vintage 30,
but what the heck is the Man O War already?

Governor sounds nothing like a V30 .. .The Manowar was like the g12t-75 but sounds nothing like that.. Both are excellent speakers to me but just different than the Celestions so I wouldn 't compare them (that's just me and my ears)

I've been looking for some info on this speaker as well. The old mega-Emi thread didn't have much info on it.

It's a kickass speaker.. Sounds great with mild distortion or heavy distortion or clean.. It's bright and in your face but is 'not' mid-heavy like my many other speakers. . That's all I can say on paper.. The only way people will find out if they meet their needs though is to try them with your own amps, own cabs, and dialed in! I'd definitely recommend it though.

Good tip about the sound clips. After listening to
them all, I think I'll look for a Swamp Thang to
pair with my Govenor. The Man O War sounded
a bit too scooped in the mids for my tastes.

I second that. Nothing on the lows and very harsh highs.

ACtually Manowars have great lows and very sweet highs(although prevalent , they're very nice) .. They do have scooped mids though ;)

I didn't even listen to the clips, as speaker clips on a site would do absolutely NOTHING for me.. You need the same amp and dial it in the same and then the clips would mean something but without it , nah.. you have to try for yourselves, and possibly base on specs/descriptions and recommendations.

The Man-O-Wars are somewhat like a G12T-75, but that's about as similar as it gets. I'll compare them to a V30, since that's the speaker I have the most experience with.

They have a strong low end, but it isn't as strong or as deep as a Vintage 30. The top end is brighter and more detailed than a V30, but I wouldn't call them harsh by any means (they're not a G12T-75). They're also not as loud as a V30.

Their midrange is relaxed, yet not scooped (there's still plenty, it's just not dominant like the top/bottom end is). They sound nice clean, and combine well with a midrange heavy amp. If you have a tendency to scoop your amp, these speakers will exaggerate that.

Man-O-Wars sound fat and chunky. I feel they're good for hard rock, 70s rock and classic metal. Modern metal would probably be better suited by a V30.

Their clips suck.

All I know is when I paired them in a cab with the govs, couldn't get them out fast enough. First I ever thought of bees in a can.

Bummer! They are bright , but I like their sound a lot. . Splawn and Roccaforte liked them too last I know, but hey we all have different tastes, and there are MANY OPTIONS!!!!! Were the ones you tried with the Governors brand new? If so , after a zillion years of trying speakers and owning a basement full I'm finally realizing that I rarely like brand new speakers.

Did you end up mixing something else with the Governor's? I like the Governor a lot ,but the only one I have has conecry . It's my only Eminence that has it out of about a dozen or so .. I'm sure they'd replace it but I don't have the receipt or anything! Still use it in a Pacific Woodworks 1x12 though as it sounds great as an extension 1x12 with certain 1x12 combos I have like an Engl , Marshall 6101,etc..
