View Full Version : The Two Rock Emerald Pro Magic
For 9 years now I have been raving about this amp. No amp that I have seen has stirred up such controversy. Years ago I went on the Dumble quest, and was lucky enough to play many actual Dumbles. Only ONE stood out as being everything I had hoped for, and gave me the tones I heard on the Robben Ford Blue line era CDs. Genes tan Dumble at Ultrasound. Back then, I offered him 15K for that amp, and he refused. I thought he had lost his mind! :huh Luckily, he had just gotten in some new amps from a company named TwoRock. I plugged into one called "Emerald pro", and was instantly FLOORED. Not only could it match that tan Dumbles tones, but gave me BETTER cleans, and reverb and FX loop as well!
Nine years later, and I have played pretty much all of the Dumble clones, and multiple versions of most. To my ear, NOTHING can touch the Emerald Pro for those impossible to get Ford Blue line era tones, and the amp can do so much much more as well. Flip on the mid boost, and its gain, grind city In my not so humble opinion, this is the best channel switching amp ever made. (unless you are into total high gain saturation, and this can kind of do that as well!) I just plugged into mine, and was having the time of my life! There is not another amp made that you can bend a note, hold it, and just listen to the amp whine like this! I just sit here with a huge stupid smile on my face, making strange contortions trying to coak different sounds out of the amp. LOL! It turns the note over like Fords amp does. It strains and strains, but will not let the note go! SO F*UCKING COOL!! :bow On certain notes, it sounds like it has a phase shifter and compressor built in, just as you hear on those old Ford records. The glaswerks,Fuchs, bludos, brown notes, CAs, other TwoRocks and other clones are KILLER amps in their own right, but NOTHING touches the Emmy for that unique, odd, and almost impossible top get tone. I LOVE this amp, and everyone NEEDS to at least get to play through one at some point. Its not everyones bag, but a unique and different flavor amp that sounds like nothing else. I have no affiliation with any builder, and I could care LESS what brand I play or like. WARM,FAT,SMOOTH,SINGING,WOODEN OBOE tones all over the place. :dude:dude:dude:dude:dude
VERY GOOD, VERY GOOD!!!

I was fortunate enough to play one and it is all that Tag reports. There are some available from time to time here in the emporium and on eBay. The price is usally $2200 - 2600.

Who is this Tag guy?
He seems to have a strong opinion of this amp.
Tag does Scott Lerner share your opinion?
Hope all is well with you my man.
Tag does Scott Lerner share your opinion?

Don't forget that I know every single circuit detail and voltage of your Emmy Pro and still have no desire to use those values. So how does my affiliation with a plethora of other companies have any correlation to the fact that I did not prefer the Emmy to my other HRM amps?
In addition, the only material difference between the Emmy and anybody elses HRM non Bluesmaster amp is the 330pf treble cap in the HRM stack and the 50K mid trimmer set to at least 20K from ground. These two $1 parts are 95% of the EMMY od tone. The clean stack is a classic 70s Dumble stack and the V1 has 120K plateloads like Henry Kaisers Dumble. Anything else anybody wants to know?
The 330pf treble cap has a HUGE effect on the tone. The standard cap size is 500pf. The 330pf has a massive effect on reducing gain in the upper mids. This is the oboe sound Tag refers too. When the Glaswerks first was being prototyped, it had a 330pf treble cap there as well. I slaved for months trying stuff to restore upper mid response until I put the 500pf in and instantly preferred it.
Let's not turn this into a pissing match that calls into question peoples ethics and motives. I can only speak for myself when I say that in direct head to head with my stable of amps, there was nothing about the Emmy that I preferred. And I build them. I could easily use any of the Emmy values. So, let's leave it at different strokes for different folks.
I do share your enthusiasm for post OD tonestacks though. That is all I play.
I doubt he or any other "R&D guy" for Bludo, Glaswerks, Fuchs etc etc would. ;)

As far as Two-Rock, I'm only playing the Emerald Pro. For me, the CR Sig and the others don't have what the E. Pro can deliver. They are awesome in their own right, but I find them to be a bit too polite and smoothed-over compared to our favorite Two-Rock. Newer doesn't always mean better.

[quote]Don't forget that I know every single circuit detail and voltage of your Emmy Pro and still have no desire to use those values.
Scott, that is your mistake. After playing all of these clones, you must know by now that its way more than values and voltages. The brand of parts and transformers alone make a HUGE difference in tone. Try an E.Pro with the Black transformers and silver ones for instance. TOTALLY different sounding amps. This is the mistake I made when I thought it was only high and low gain that made all the tonal differences in the E.Pros. Then try a Topaz next to an Emerald pro. SAME circuit supposedly, but different brands of parts and different transformers. TOTALLY different sounding amp.

Scott, when you and I played your glaswerks next to each other, you heard exactly the straining I was talking about, and did the EXACT same thing Barry did with his Glaswerks.. reach over and turn the volume almost all the way up on the Glaswerks to try and match the E.Pros straining...with no luck.
Direct A/B clips Glaswerks,E.Pro It is ALL OVER these clips for anyone to hear. This is dead on how the two sound in person, and dead on with how they compared at the amp show. The E.Pro is FAR smoother and strainier. No comparison.

Glaswerks. http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=6431894&q=hi&newref=1
Nice tone on both. I thought the Glaswerks was more aggressive, but also had more harmonic complexity to it. The E.Pro was smoother and darker. I am not really a Dumble guy, but the Glaswerks sounds like it can do some great straight up rock tones as well.

Blueser , with all due respect, there are a tons of amps that IMHO rock out
with that classic complex topend thing going on better than these Dumble clones, Komet, Matchless, Elmwood, on and on endless....
But that RF poli or worried life blues tone is elusive to say the least, rare as hens teeth,
There are so many clones that do the more open sounding chirpy thing, also.

Yes.....I get all that. I was merely stating what I heard in the clips. I am really not a Dumble guy, or a big Robben fan, so capturing that elusive tone is not something I strive for, though I appreciate it for what it is.
As "simple" as it may be to achieve, I still prefer that chirpy top end tone. It's all subjective, but all good. I own a Komet, so I know what it's capable of. The Soldano SLO is also capable of those harmonically juicy tones. One of the best, in fact.
Whatever your poison, enjoy it!

Without a doubt, if you are into AC/DC type of tones, and more cruch power chord trebly types of tones, the Glaswewrks and Bludos are better than the E.Pro. The E.Pro is all about smooth, thich, singing, wooden flute types of tones, BUT, with the mid switch flipped up, can become a BEAST. Here is a clip of the LOW GAIN E.Pro doing the intro to Unchained. WICKED!!!!
http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=1554401&q=hi&newref=1
And here is that same amp and cab set for smoother Robben Ford type tones, into the same Cab with same guitar! NO EFFECTS! INCREDIBLE!! here that phasey sound?

No amp that I have seen has stirred up such controversy.
I think it's awesome that you think the amp did it. You could replace "Emerald Pro" with your favorite brand of fried chicken and the controversy would be the same.
How do I get the text in my posts to be all red? It really stands out :)
Welcome back buddy.
SORRY!! As to not mislead anyone, the Unchained clip was les paul, the smoother second clip was a Guild Starfire IV. I have it listed here on my computer. Sorry for the mistake! Same cab though with G12h30 speakers. The main difference is mid boost on in the unchained clip, off in the smooth second clip.

I feel someone with any ties to any company has a built in bias. That is my feelings only. You can feel and think whatever you like. I love Scott, and he is one of my favorite players, and a good friend. However, I call it as I see it. He is welcome to do the same to me. I have come right out and let Barry Weber do as much as video tape me admitting the Glaswerks smoked my Sig 2 after I raved about it, so you KNOW I am being dead honest. I bought the sig 2 breaking my own rule of buying without another amp to compare it with that I was familiar with, and I paid the price. After attending the amp show and seeing the cliques and biases first hand, my mind is made up on the entire Dumble clone thing. "I" will trust no one other than my own ears, or someone with NO TIES or who is not friends with any builder or any amp company.
I own a Komet, so I know what it's capable of. The Soldano SLO is also capable of those harmonically juicy tones. One of the best, in fact.

I wish Robben would let David Grissom produce another album for him. The Mystic Mile album has some great tunes and tones for sure.
Don't think DG produced Mystic Mile.Think it was The Blue Line who produced it.
Grissom played some cool stuf on the album though.
He Don't Play Nothin' But The Blues riff and rhythm DG played are killer.:dude

Well each to his own tag. Nice to see you around again and what a way to get back into it. Just couldn't leave well enough alone could you...
I used an e-pro for awhile years ago, liked it then but it would never work for me now as I just can't warm up to that style of guitar and sound anymore. I did latch on to a CA last year for a few months while it's owner was on tour and I haven't heard anything finer for that style amp but I don't play like you. I'm glad it works for you though. Best for everyone ? C'mon........why start it all up again ?

However, the low gainer I sold had the silver transformers and it was smooth as glass. I want one of each! :AOK:dude:AOK

Tag,
They come and go. They sure do sound good and for what they do, nothing sounds like them. I remember when they first came out. I sold a whole bunch and owned a bunch. Wish I still had one to add to the stash o' cool amps. I will keep you posted if I see one FS with the silver tranny.

Since i live in Denmark, i rarely have a chance to try out a Two-Rock (if i'm lucky i can find one when i'm in England)
And i was wondering, how to Emerald Pro compares to the Sig. Reverb 2? Does the Emerald have more gain or is it just "the same amp" with different breand of components like you said Tag.
This thread is starting my Two-Rock gas again..
Hey does your have the silver or black trannies? If it has the silver, do you want to sell it to me?? (I am serious)
I will look this afternoon............family morning........got to take care of the kids....but honestly Tag I really do not want to sell it.
We shall talk later..
Can an E-Pro sound like this?
http://www.pebbleman.co.za/ricker/Blues%20at%20Night%20Solo.mp3
No, that is to compressed. Sounds like a distortion box.

Totally different sounding amps. The sigs are not HRM. They do not have that straining, smooth tubey tone. An HRM is needed for that. (post overdrive tone stack) I have been saying from way back that two rock was moving backwards when they went from HRM to non HRM amps. Look at Dumble himslef. He went from non HRM to HRM himself, and all of the other builders seem to be going the HRM route as well. IMO, it is a superior design. Without an HRM, you simply can not get enough treble in the overdrive without it being buzzy, or bottom end without it being flubby. For ME, an HRM is a MUST.

I hear you Rick. The first thing I do every morning is kick myself in the arse for selling my other low gain, silver transformer one. :( It had a shorting problem I was unaware of, and was making it hollow sounding with less bass. I did not realize it until I sold it, and went and played another a year later.
I don't know if i got this wrong, but is HRM the treble pots?
HRM is post over drive tone stack. You have a bass, middle and treble control that is in the lead channel. (Inside the amp. You adjust it one time to your liking and are done with it)

Ok cool, so it's an internal EQ you set. After you've set the HRM, you can then use the external EQ's to further tweak it, that's pretty cool.
Tag,
Running the TC-2290 through the loop is stunning w/ the E-PRO.......http://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon10.gif
Have you had the opportunity to experience the TC-2290 in the loop?

Thats right, plus there is an internal gain adjust for the lead channel. You set that to where you have the MOST gain you would ever use, and leave it there. Then you have the external gain controls as usual.

The 2290 is what I use with the E. Pro and it is indeed stunning. However, the less costly Lexicon MPX-1 and even an old DeltaLab Effectron III sound great in the loop of an Emerald Pro, (TC 2290 is King though).

Don't forget that I know every single circuit detail and voltage of your Emmy Pro and still have no desire to use those values. So how does my affiliation with a plethora of other companies have any correlation to the fact that I did not prefer the Emmy to my other HRM amps?
Let's not turn this into a pissing match that calls into question peoples ethics and motives. I can only speak for myself when I say that in direct head to head with my stable of amps, there was nothing about the Emmy that I preferred. And I build them. I could easily use any of the Emmy values. So, let's leave it at different strokes for different folks.
I do share your enthusiasm for post OD tonestacks though. That is all I play.
I'm gonna support Scott here. Let's not go back to the gutter here and start questioning peoples ethics here. Scott is very opinated, but he has also offered his time, his knowledge and home!
It's no wonder youz guyz can't agree on some cap value for the Epro, since it's really the Opal that's got the TONE!
Welcome back, TAG! But I think you're wrong... about something... Maybe the brand of strings you use... In any case, I'm sure your chops have improved since not wasting time here for a while!

Gutter?? Scotts great, I love the guy. The fact is he has done work for Bludo, Fuchs, and Glaswerks. If that does not make you think it effects his opinion of other brands, that is your choice. It is not just Scott, its ANY builder, or anyone who is friends with, or works for a builder. Its all over this place, and it makes ME take anything they say about other amps with a monsterous grain of salt. You do not have to. I have been acused of it with both Bruno and twoRock. The fact is I have never had, or have any connections with any amp or guitar company. This does not mean my opinions will be shared by everyone, which is why I try and post clips, and comparison clips of everything I have, so you can hear for yourself how, and why I draw the conclusions I do. You can then judge with your own ears. :AOK

Why is the amp no longer available? Was it replaced with a 'new' or 'upgraded' version...or just eliminated?
Over the years on this intarweb I've sort of come to a similar place as Tag in that I just can't trust much of anything I read on the net. I've gotta hear it myself...hopefully with some quality time to really get to know it. Lots of amps make me smile when I plug in...but only a few keep me smiling much later and listening/playing it for myself is the only way to know.
'Nuther question: What years were these amps made?

Actually the one you owned, Travis now owns and it has a new output tranny that TR replaced. You should hear it now with the new tranny....The one I have I bought from another forum member. I could not afford to keep both Emmy's or I probably would have.

Don't wanna hijack too much but the linked amp stand doesn't look like the one in the pic with the TR. The one in the TR pic looks like it has two 'levels' and the speaker cab is tilted back but the amp head isn't.
FWIW (Structo), I've used one of those amp stands like in that link with a 2x12 cab plus Marshall-100W-size amp head. I just cut some appropriate diameter PVC piping to the right length and slid them over the 'vertical' brackets at the back. The speaker cabinet holds the PVC pipes in place. The PVC pipes give the amp head something to rest against so it doesn't slide off. From the front you can't even see the PVC pipes.

Yes BudLite and jspax, I love that Emmy Pro that has worked its way around the forum, glad to keep it in the family. I have played this head A LOT this year and it still amazes me the variety of tones I can get with a variety of guitars. My most recent passion is using my Tele with it. Seemed to have brought out a whole new range of tones given the low output nature of the pickups and then not using as much of the gain on the amp. Really great stuff.

Yes. One of the most unique, and flat out coolest amps ever made. The smoothest amp in overdrive I have ever played, and still the strain king. Actually does a few Dumble qualitys better than my Dumble. Amazing amp. Killer reverb, great loop.....What more can you say?

I'm glad I've got mine, very versatile. I bought it a couple years ago and it has kept me satisfied. the only thing that is a negative, if you can call it that, is trying to find Jan Phillips 7591's. I've gotten to like them and if you can find them they're quite expensive. Good news is that they last and last.

I am stunned that this amp has not been copied like so many other amps out there.
I love my Bludo and Fuchs for sure but There is a unique quality both in Cleans (especially in cleans) where this thing is just kills- Also the gain structure is brilliant and seems to give such unique note separation it really is a unique bird. Me Likey!!!
I read Lerner's comments and agree that those few changes in values throughout the circuit are what make this thing so unique.
