Announcing the People's Amp:
a handmade 18 watt 2xel84 push-pull high-gain tube rectified monster for $650. You might not like the way it looks, but you can't beat the sound or the feel (or the price!)

Make an EF86 version? It's a simple variation from the Marshall 18 and IMHO offers even more tonal complexity. In any event, good luck with this endeavor!

Very cool-kinda like a low budget version of Red Iron cosmetically-instead of fancy wood you have the crate-as in packing, not those cheesy CRATE amps.

Thank you very much! Seriously, my leftist tendencies notwithstanding, the whole commie thing is really a tongue-in-cheek...

Hmmm...an interesting idea, especially if you're into that Vox thing. I think it would really make it a much different amp, though. The EF86 is a higher gain tube, and honestly, the amp is pretty hot in the preamp stage already. I can look into it, but I'm pretty sure I'd have to redesign the input structure and the bias circuit for that stage, which might just end up sounding just about the same. I think the sound of my amp has alot to do with the way that you're able to drive the power tubes at any volume level. Now if you're looking for a custom build, maybe we can talk ;-)

Looks awesome! Definitely an interesting alternative to decandent, bourgeois amplifiers!

I toy with the idea from time to time...the decision to build a head was just one of many things I did to keep the cost down. I could talk to my cabinet guy and find a speaker, if you'd be interested. Most of any additional cost would be in the speaker, I'm sure.

At present I'm pretty well set in the amp dept, I was asking more from curiosity. I have several EL-84 powered amps and find them to be such wonderful amps, ready to respond to any little input from you fingers, just riding the fence of clean and mean. Most of the guys I know from our local blues society chapter seem to favor the grab and go factor of a small combo, although I realize the separate head/cab isolates the tubes from cab vibration and offers different advantages. As another guy who works with his hands and tries to deliver a quality, I wish you all the success you want with your amps. I'll give my buds a 'heads-up' to the People's Amp when I hear them asking about 'what's good out there?'

That is one fine amp you are building, I have a 1974 clone I built - LOVE IT. BTW it cost me $650 to build it myself - That's a hell of a deal.
