Over G#m and E chords. I guess I could play B major scale over them but what else could be used over that progression for that "refreshing" sound as opposed to same ol'boring licks which I am so good at? :D Thanks, Ed

Hi Jim. Thanks a TONE :)
Uh, do you mean F major pent scale? Otherwise, would it not clash with G#m?

First lay out the progression then find song extended harmonies to pinpoint some ideas and melodies...
is it...
||: G#m | E7 :|| or ||: G#m | Emaj7 :||
???
The first one is similar to Glass Onion by The Beatles and the second is similar to the bridge in That Smell by Skynyrd (the prince charming part).

This is the tune and we'll be playing it this Sunday.

Chorus goes something like B, F#, G#m, E, B, F#, G#m, A then it goes to G#m, E, G#m, E where I'd like to say something over those 4 chords. It is in the key of B, btw. I am guessing G Aeolian might work? Hmmmm

B - common tone
G# - common tone
sometimes, a lot can be said with a single note.
D# - chord tone on the G#m, M7 over the E.
or notes that aren't in the chord, but are implied by the key:
F# - 7th for G#m, 9th on the E.
In other words, a source of "refreshment" may be found in forgetting about "licks" or "scales", and just simply find a note, a note pair, a couple of notes, etc. that have a particularly unique quality.
For example, you might think E to G#m that's I to iii in E Major. An A, from the key of E Major, has a particular quality over each of those chords.
But, if you think G#m to E, that's i to VI in G#m. An A#, from the key of G# minor has a different quality.
If you're thinking keys and scales, or "what mode to play over which chord" you might miss something simple like that. You could use A, A#, or even both depending on what you infer, what you want to imply, etc.
Just a suggestion,
Steve

Those are some pretty hip ideas!
For something that kinda shifts back and forth, how about alternateing between C#m Pentatonic and Am Pentatonic? Then you can always slip back into B/G#m Pentatonic.
