I am going to tell my mom to go to the local guitar store and say, "What's a great gift for a Jimi Hendrix fan that's less than $100?" What do you think I'll end up with?

Something horrible.
Write a list of reasonable things. I do this every year for my wife. It helps her find good stuff for me, and also when others call and ask her for gift ideas, she has a list handy. Stuff is still a surprise for me, cos I have no idea what might come from the list. Actually, I do it ahead of time, and usually forget whta I have asked for, so it's really a surprise.

I just buy it for myself and tell my wife thanks. If you tell your parents to go to the store and ask for something for a Hendrix fan there absolutely NO TELLING what you may end up with. You need to be very specific and even check withthe store ahead of time to make sure they have what you want

You'll end up with whatever they've had collecting dust on the shelf for the past decade that they couldn't even give away.

I don't. I do not expect anybody to know what I want in gear, so I do not ask for anything except Ernie Ball .010s. You can never have too many strings. Or blank cassettes, CD-Rs, DVD-Rs.
the vast majority of what I like is far too expensive to expect it to be given for a present.

+1
Plus how can I expect them to know what I want when I'm not really sure what I want.

I email a link to stuff I want. Except guitars, those I don't let anyone buy for me. Two years ago, my former fiance went nuts and bought me a bunch of pedals, a dobro and an amp. I sent the links thinking she'd pick one thing and surprise me - she bought everything!

I'm firmly seated in this camp. My wife doesn't know the details, only the overall stuff. She'd know I want a Wah, but not that I want a Gif-FX Mega-Wah, or where to find one.
I also compile as large a list as possible, as early as possible, so it's a sort of surprise.

Buy it yourself and give Mom the receipt. She'll get the idea.
My friend's wife follows what he's talking about and for his birthday, she got him a 57 Twin reissue! He freakin' loved it. Now that's a woman who knows how to keep her man satisfied because she pays attention to the details. He'd been talking about it just a little during the year.

I give my list to my shop. She knows where it is and they know who she is.
