i've got a replica delay on my board currently. i've read about people stacking delays, what kind of sound does that get? would you get two of the same delay? does it have much applications for mayer, clapton, srv, hendrix type stuff?

um....probably not those guys...I don't think any of them "stacked delays" at least as a signature tone...The Edge of U2 does this kinda stuff at times...

I have been using a stereo delay mixed with a reverse gated delay with mix very low sounds really haunting and dark...But not really pop sounding in anyway.

I stack a shorter slapback type delay into a longer delay with some modulation from my DMM and I can get lost for hours ... hours... hours !!!:AOK

I've done this on demo recordings. It's fun to experiment with overlapping echoes.

here's some multi delay stacking; two yamaha magicstomps with 8 tap stereo modulated delays each and 2 stock DD3s:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59wvXJ7gt0g

In this demo, the sound at the beggining features no reverb at all, only stacked delays and a volume pedal. The rhythm stuff later on shows you how to create bigger sounding U2 type stuff using series delays.

So in total we have something like 18 stereo delays on at once!

this one is using stacked delays to create a monster sound - the first instance is 4 doublers and a slapback, the second is a mixture of parrallel and series delays.
the fourth 'spring reverb' sound is also only delays.

All the sounds in these demos are patches I've created using the multitap delays on one of my magicstomps.

I also enjoy cascading delay pedals into each other... sometimes 3 at a time...

Here's a blog that I follow - This guy stacks his delays frequently and it's got me thinking. This article is a review of his old Arion SAD-1. There are two video clips, the second one has multiple delays going. It's very cool. Ethereal.

:AOK

it's his fourth birthday tomorrow and his whole life has been documented in my youtube vids!!!

I have a ton of other stacking tricks but never get round to recording them....

if using dual delay on the timefactor counts i am stacking

i don't have two seperate delays but one thing thats fun is making other effects with delay, like chorus, flange, ringmod, rotary and reverbs can be made with delays

i think chorus is mixing two delays between 1-30ms depending on depth, and to make that flange you can increase the time and add repeats

don't remember offhand how to make ringmod, i think it's done with short times and short repeats with reverse delays

reverb is short times with long repeats too i think, maybe a multitap

rotary sim is something around 5ms / 60% repeats 100% wet mixed with 70ms / 60% repeat 100% wet and mix level a little lower, plus some chorus

just download eventide timefactor presets from their website they have most of these and i posted the damage control timeline presets in the eventide timefactor post too, i'm sure they apply to any delay

I like running my memory lane into my replica. Going analog into digital sounds pretty good, but both units are great by themselves.

I can choose quarter note or dotted eighth on either pedal, and going 1/4 into 1/8th gets some really cool rhythmic patterns. Going 1/8 into 1/4 will give you longer/spaced out delays, good for a lead line or some volume swells.

I often stack digital and analogue delays together, if you try and set them up to the same speed by ear with plenty of repeats they will gradually go out of sync the longer you let them repeat for so you get some fantastic textured sounds, great for tremelo picking with.

Jaywalker, how exactly did you get that sound at the very start of your first vid?sounds amazing!I've only started using delay in the past few months so Im still exploring.

DL4-->Boss PS-3-->Timefactor...stacking delays is fun...not to mention I just added the Deluxe memory man w/analogman mods to the family...all I need is a tape delay...TTE here I come! :D

thje sound at the beggining is very complicated, it would take a week to describe!
the basics - TS9 > pearl octaver on upper octave > OD3 > vol pedal > pitch shifter with max pre delay feeding back into itself (75%) set at + 12 > 8 magicstomp delays set between 200 and half second delays in series and parallel > DD3 on full mix set to max time > DD3 set with everything at 12 o'clock.

easy peasy lemon squeezy.
try getting that sound out of an AXE FX/Line 6.....:drink

Everybody asks about that sound at gigs, especially when I run it stereo!

so, with the risk of being completely confused, what about at the start of the last vid?same setup?

Here's a clip I did awhile back with 2 DD3's stacked in the loop, one set short, one long, and a bit of chorus from a MIJ CE-2:
