If I record using Garage Band on my MACBook Pro, can I play it back on the piano or organ? Can I play MIDI files on them? If so, what software do I need as Garage Band appears to only record and play back on the computer.

Huh!? Only way to play a real piano or organ is with your fingers (or arms, feet, head, or whatever I guess... :jo ). You can use whatever software synths that come with Garageband however. Or an external synth or keyboard that accepts midi. Is this what you mean?

we have a PC program that plays our organ when we don't have an organist, and i would like to do that with the MAC. We can either use pre-recorded music or the organist can generate new tunes and play it via the MIDI adaptor. I have the MIDI adaptor hooked now to a keyboard and would like to test it by playing back what I record as if it were being played on the keyboard again.

You can, absolutely most definitely, play GB into a MIDI keyboard but you need a MIDI interface.
Your local music store should have a bunch.
Just grab a cheapie, set it up in the audio/midi mac control panel and you are good to go.

Hold on....you DO have a MIDI keyboard with built-in sounds, right?

So where in GB do tell it to play on the keyboard instead of the computer sound card?

Audio MIDI Setup.app
Find it, have your MIDI interface driver loaded and configure per the window.
That should route MIDI from GB to the interface when you run GB.

MAJOR edit here.
GB won't transmit to external MIDI. I have GB but was using it only with a MIDI controller and audio, and very little, some time ago, as it won't do all that I want INCLUDING, sadly, playback to external MIDI. Total brain fade:jo

Pianos with an electronic player adapter and some church organs, for example later Rodgers and Allen organs, have MIDI built in. You could play through those.

Invest in Logic Express and a MIDI interface. Problem solved.

Daves Church, GarageBand does not do midi out. You need a midi sequencer with midi out. There are some midi file players that will do midi out but a player would not record your midi performance if that is what you would like it to play back.

Try EasyBeat
http://www.ergonis.com/products/easybeat/

Or Rhondo
http://www.fracturedsoftware.com/rondo/

Both have midi out. EasyBeat will record your midi performance.

Thanks very much for the links. i have found that GB doesn't play to the piano or organ so want to find programs such as these you mentioned to organize our playlist and then play them during the service. i will try them both and see which does what i want. Much appreciated! Dave

Not sure if EasyBeat or Rhondo will make a playlist. Try Intuem. though it is a full featured audio and midi sequencer it is very inexpensive. it will make playlists.
