View Full Version : The most beautiful song ever written?

Driving to work listening to the likes of Silent Night, Ave Maria and the like got me wondering....what is the most beautiful song ever written? A matter of opinion of course and I'd like to hear yours. They don't have to be Christmas songs....

"Sonata Pathetique" by Beethoven (not really a "song", I guess... but a truly beautiful piece of music, nonetheless)

"Yesterday" by McCartney

I'd say Ave Maria by Schubert if I had to pick just one.
Very lyrical, and the melody is completely unpredictable, as opposed to most western european songs which aren't intentionally dissonant. has a buildup, major/minor variation, climax, peaceful resolution, all in what 3 minutes (as opposed to 80 minutes for a symphony).

"Something" by George Harrison with the Beatles.

Cool so far. I had a feeling yesterday would pop up pretty quick, as it came to mind while listening to the aforementioned Christmas tunes. I am pretty partial to moonlight sonata myself... and when I say "song", I mean any piece of composed music.

Touche'. There is something beautiful about a song that is such a poignant reminder of the decline of western culture.

One song that always evokes an emotional response from me and one that I think is really beautiful is Jackson Brownes's Late for the Sky (although, there are many other beautiful songs on that album as well.)

Love, Reign o'er Me
"Old and Lost Rivers" by Tobias Picker
-RAH3
Warmth of the Sun BW made melodic sense of C-Am-Eb-Cm. (6 or 7 others he wrote are good for me too. Some of the strongest melodies written from any genre)
Stravinsky - Firebird Suite (individually 3rd movement???(the soft melody before the strong tympani movement) and last section)
Bold As Love, esp rhythm and last solos
+1 on aft of a faun
So many meaningful good ones, it's difficult to stop.

So many Stevie Wonder songs. But I have a soft spot for Superwoman/Last Summer
Warmth of the Sun is also a winner.
Lots of wonderful melodies in classical music.
Rachmaninoff's Paganini Variations (I think number 18 is the popular one that got used in Somewhere In Time and jazzed up in Groundhog day) and the 2nd movement of the 2nd Piano Concerto.
Beethoven's 6'th symphony (actually the 5th written but due to first performances the Pastoral is commonly called the 6th and the Emporer is called the 5th)
Borodin's Nocturne (I want to do a fusion guitar version of this melody someday)
And my all time favorite, turn out the lights and lose myself in the music, Tchaikovsky's Andante Cantabile.

Arggg! Someone just beat me to Amazing Grace. O.K. The second movement of the Concierto De Aranjuez. It represents the composer's conversation with God after the death of his son. It's not only a profoundly deep and beautiful composition but it is more akin to an "chathartic experience". YMMV.

I would say that in the context of popular western anglo-music: Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows" seconded by McCartney's "Here, There and Everywhere". The former was inspired by the first one, and McCartney has stated that the GOK is the best popular song ever written.

Absolutely.
Some of my favorites in the "pop" category that make me stop whatever I'm doing and listen include:
Eva Cassidy singing Sting's "Fields of Gold," or "I Know You By Heart"
Bonnie Raitt singing "I Can't Make You Love Me"
The Roches singing "Hammond Song"
Stan Rogers singing "First Christmas"
Geoff Muldaur singing "I've Got to Find Blind Lemon"
Jackson Browne singing "In the Shape of a Heart"
James Taylor singing "Frozen Man"
Joni Mitchell singing "River"
The Tartan Tones singing "Night of Silence"
Steve Goodman singing "City of New Orleans"
Steve James singing Ray Charles' "Born to Lose"
Elvis Costello singing "Allison"
The Beach Boys singing "Caroline, No"
The Band singing "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down," and "It Makes No Difference"
...and a whole bunch of others that escape me, at the moment.

I've studied and play all types of music and IMO picks these two as the ultimates in melody and the arrangements/instrumentation are pure genius. After that I could go on for days about Mozart as there is certaily perfection there. Then, Debussey, Miles, Beatles, Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny, Spyro Gyra, etc., etc. in no particular order.

I stole a ride on a passing star
Not knowing where I was going
How near or how far
Through years of light, lands of future and past
Until the heavenly gates
Were sighted at last
Starrider, rider, rider
Take me to the stars
Starrider, rider, rider
Show me where you are
Northern lights flashed by
And then they were gone
And as old stars would die
So the new ones were born
And ever on I sailed
Celestial ways
And in the light of my years
Shone the rest of my days
Speed increasing
All control is in the hands of those who know
Will they help us grow
To one day be starriders
Starrider, rider, rider
Show me where you are
Starrider, rider, rider
Take me to the stars
Speed increasing
All control is in the hands of those who know

"For No One" (McCartney composition form Revolver, but specifically the Emmylou Harris interpretation, if you've never heard it do yourself a huge favor...it's on "Pieces of the Sky")

Driving to work listening to the likes of Silent Night, Ave Maria and the like got me wondering....what is the most beautiful song ever written? A matter of opinion of course and I'd like to hear yours. They don't have to be Christmas songs....
In my lifetime I've head maybe 20,000 songs. There must be millions more. I hear new ones every day. When I've heard them all, I'll post my answer. So far, I suspect it'll be a song about someone who's in love. A song with a toneful singer, a story that grabs my attention and guitars.

To lead a better life I need my love to be here...
Here, making each day of the year
Changing my life with a wave of her hand
Nobody can deny that there's something there
There, running my hands through her hair
Both of us thinking how good it can be
Someone is speaking but she doesn't know he's there
I want her everywhere and if she's beside me
I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her everywhere
Knowing that love is to share
Each one believing that love never dies
Watching her eyes and hoping I'm always there
I want her everywhere and if she's beside me
I know I need never care
But to love her is to need her everywhere
Knowing that love is to share
Each one believing that love never dies
Watching her eyes and hoping I'm always there
To be there and everywhere

Great thread, some wonderful music here...thanks.
I'll leave out the classical stuff, and focus instead on popular tunes which in my case have often been burned into my psyche by hearing / seeing certain live performances...in no particular order...
Lighthouse...JT w/ Crosby/Nash on harmonies
Romeo & Juliet...Mark Knopfler (the live version with Chris White sax solo on the final DS tour brought tears)
Killing Me Softly...Roberta Flack (the outro kills, jus' sayin'...)
Cause We've Ended As Lovers...Jeff Beck
Stella Blue...the version Jerry sang under the spotlight in the Uptown Theater in Chicago 1978 left a mark on me...beautiful
Remember Me...Willie Nelson Willie solo under the moon at Red Rocks in '81 was intensely moving
When The Sun Meets The Sky...Eric Johnson's tone and playing in the outro minutes of this tune are sublime
The Dark Side of the Moon...many, many passages on this album are hauntingly beautiful
Landslide...gotta give credit on the original Stevie Nicks performance
I Can't Make You Love Me..Bonnie Raitt wow
The Difficult Kind...Sheryl Crow wow redux
South City Midnight Lady...Doobies
Shower the People and Never Die Young...JT (poppy fer sher but again, jus sayin')
Fields of Gold...Sting like him or not...

Think we covered them all in the first five pages. A giant +1 to any of the ones listed here, and I can't think of anything I'd add to top any of these. But I'd also recommend Mayer's "Covered in Rain" - live from the Any Given Thursday DVD years ago (also did a great cover of Lenny that show). And the solo acoustic version of For a Dancer, or Something Fine, or Sky Blue and Black from Jackson Browne would all be up there too.
Hard to pick. I'd put Great Gig in the Sky on the list. Probably not first place, but it should be there somewhere.
One song that always evokes an emotional response from me and one that I think is really beautiful is Jackson Brownes's Late for the Sky (although, there are many other beautiful songs on that album as well.)
"Something" by George Harrison with the Beatles.
'Ribbons In The Sky'--Stevie Wonder
'Little Wing'--Jimi Hendrix
Maybe Somewhere Over the Rainbow
I would say that in the context of popular western anglo-music: Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows" seconded by McCartney's "Here, There and Everywhere". The former was inspired by the first one, and McCartney has stated that the GOK is the best popular song ever written.

"I'm In Love" - written by Bobby Womack, recorded by The Poet and Wilson Pickett. Lovely tune, and there's something about the interlocking Cropper - Womack guitars that just does it.

Awesome. Alison Krauss has such a unique, angelic voice, that it's hard not to listen. I especially like Scarlet Tide.

The one that comes to mind for me is Riviera Paradise by SRV.
I have to listen to the whole thing when its one.
Just conveys a certain relaxed feeling IMO.

Classics- It would be pretty hard to beat Tchaikovsky's- The Seasons.
These last few years, I would have to go with John Frusciante's "Dark/Light" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFIu_crp77M

i would never claim something is the most beautiful piece every written but i find gorecki's 3rd symphony to be crushingly beautiful.
