I was thinking of swapping some stock tubes around with some NOS RCA's and I was wondering: If V1, V2, and V3 are the tubes in my preamp section that are effected by multiple stages of gain in channels 1 and 2 of the amp and V4 and V5 are the effects loop and phase inverter (respectively) would the tubes in V4 and V5 effect tone or do these tubes perform some other function? I guess to cut to the chase: Is it worth buying NOS tubes for V4 and V5 in my scenario?

what kind of amp? the phase inverter splits your signal so that one half goes to half your power tubes and the other half goes to the other half. IMO, a well balanced tube aand non microphonic tube is more important . im sure that a good chinese or russian fully tested would suffice. effects loop? i dont know about hese but if the signal passes through it i would want something neutral sounding. BUT THAT IS A GUESS

It is certainly worth purchasing low-price used/test-new vintage tubes, in my opinion. All amps I've re-tubed have exhibited changes when changing even the tubes later in the sound path.

What is the amp, and how do you use it?

Thanks for the responses guys. The amp is a new Bogner Alchemist. I will use it for mostly the clean channel (channel one) with medium to medium-high overdrive on channel two when used...

I recommend finding out which tubes come into play in which channel, and changing them, one at a time (this is critical), to another tube (different manufacturer, but same type) and listen carefully. Let your ears guide you. This will get you further than if I or someone else tells you what tubes to put where.

If it's a Fender amp here is righteous advice:

RCA/Sylvania and other old 60's tubes are what i have always used. I wouldnt stick in a Sovtek/EH/JJ or any other resissue tube if you gave me a lifetime supply of them for free. JJ is the only tube i would consider but i havent had to go that route. Buy old tubes where ever you can get them. Only then will i have to settle for second best. The difference will be very obvious to your ears...
