Early marshalls were modded blackfaces weren't they? I might be wrong but it definitely sounds like a treble booster - or made to emulate a treble booster (reange Master) into a Marshall. Its just a question. Im still 100% buying this tone machine!!!

Modded Bassman. Different beast. But into a clean Marshall a Rangemaster still wouldn't crunch like that.
That said, for all I know there IS a Rangemaster going INTO a couple more gain stages in there, which would take care of that clean amp issue. Looking forward to more vids :AOK
And I do love a rangemaster... ;)

Hey man, it looks from the picture that it may run on 9 - 18 volts, is that so ??
Yup. We're finding the 9V application to be best at low volume bedroom rockin as well as giving you a bit of that variac'd "brown" character to the feel. That additional saturation that makes playing fun and easy. @18V you get a ton of dynamic content. My #1 personal goal was to get that big percussive sound and feeling of a 4x12 moving air, 18V gives ya that.
Today we will be hitting the DLS with a Strat further honing in on it's character. Right now our main focus is tuning the gain stages for clean up.

The GNR is on RAWK. The R8 is on ROCK.
RAWK setting is a bit more compressed and gainy, the lowend resonance is near your throat and the tonality focused and cutting. Like an 80's Marshall.
ROCK setting has the whole "single notes sound clean, chords sound crunchy Marshall-character", the lowend resonance is at your chest, the tonality is loose but NOT flabby. Like a 4 input Marshall.
The DLS is all about dynamics and player/gear interaction. In the clips we didn't demonstrate the differences between 9V and 18V because that is such a visceral experience. Unless you are playing it, it is tough to communicate in a video the "HUGE potential" feeling of the DLS @18V or the low volume rock god playing ease @9V.
Youtube compression doesn't help much to illustrate any of this, either.

Do you have any audio tracks on your homepage? It would be great to hear some higher quality samples.
Youtube is useless for anything but a very rough suggestion of what a pedal actually sounds like. I've never understood why people whip out their credit cards after hearing highly compressed, lo-fi audio recordings (often done with a camcorder's mic to boot!). You guys realize Jimmy Page licks don't just suddenly fly out of your fingers after buying the pedal, right?! :p

Back to my previous post, do you have any clips using noncompressed audio?
Also, how transparent is the the pedal? Does it work well into a clean amp? Does it retain the low and high end?
I've been thinking of getting an OCD for my medium gain tones (Timmy has the low od covered) but the DLS sounds intriguing.

I know we have some, but I don't have any on my computer. Maybe Nic can post a few at some point.
Its voiced like a JMP and JCM800 - so its not transparent like a Timmy is for instance. It was designed to go into a clean amp to give you a Marshall OD sound. If you like the highs and lows of those particular Marshalls, then you should be VERY pleased with the EQing.

WOW!!, that outtakes video is outstanding. The pedal just screams classic rock so much-can I get one and where? It may be the best sounding rock pedal I have ever heard and I have owned and still own quite a few dirt boxes. Really amazing what you have captured and created here. Holy smokes-I can't stop thinking about that tone. Makes me want a Les Paul again. How will this pedal sound with a good Tele or Esquire and an EL-84 amp-will it retain some of what I just heard on the video?
The irony is I started this thread when I found this thing mentioned somewhere-maybe on the Cat website and I don't own one yet! 111 replies too-I WANT ONE NOW!!

There is not a bad setting on the PRRI. Fender really nailed it. I've wanted one from the first time I heard a low E into the PRRI at GC. That single note completely owned all the weedle wankers playing their bees in tin cans.

I think more than any other clip this one demonstrates just how much the DLS's input range acts like a real amp in how it responds to your pickups. If you go back and review the previous clip of the 'Appetite' tones I think the pedal was set up at roughly the same settings - the guitar sounds are completely different not only in the amount of gain achieved but dynamic response as well.

Got mine today! I'm getting good results so far with my EDT set clean. My settings have evolved to:
12 volts, all knobs :52; great starting point for:
-both modes
-13/29 watt settings, mid-boost on and off on amp
-hums/singles
-stacking with Lift boost at :45 and A+B channel on Switchazel, which is in front of DLS
(haven't tried stage/band volume yet, but I'm getting inspiring tones with my amp knocked down with a Hotplate, and that's a must.)

Posted this in another thread, but I thought it could help some people decide to take the leap.
Got mine yesterday and checked it out for about two hours.
My very first impression is WOW. Using my strat (single coils only), it is a very, VERY nice low-medium gain OD that is extremely responsive to how hard you hit the strings and where your volume is set. I was looking for something with a bit less drive than my OCD, and this fits the bill exactly.
Gain wise, I would put it in between the KOT (OD mode) and the OCD, having the responsiveness of the OCD and the beautiful top end clarity of the KOT. The top end of the DLS has a VERY nice chime and openness to it, while the bottom end is nice and thick. Cleans up nicely when you turn down, backs off when you hit the strings softer...really really nice job on this.
Tone knob is effective but not super sensitive...which I like. The two modes sound similar, but not identical and I'm having a hard time chosing between them. The top setting (rawk) seems to be better for lead work as the upper notes have a bit more thickness to them while the lower setting (rock) just oozes rhythm tones in spades (think the stones, crowes type of stuff) due to, what I perceive, is a top end that's a bit lighter. Don't take that as something bad, because, you can just boost it by goosing with another pedal to get it close to the "rawk" modes tones (I used my KOT for this).
This pedal also plays very nicely with other pedals, which is always a pleasant surprise.
I'm going to using it more over the next few days and I'll be sure to post more about it. I'll do some clips this weekend.
I've gotta say, as my first catalinbread product, this is a home run. Now it's got me looking at other pedals in the line.
Great job!

I can't seem to find an overdrive or distortion of this type that works well with a fuzz face in front of it.

I use a Silicon FF in front of mine and it works great in the Rock mode, about mid gain. It gives me the sound of a Marshall and Fuzz Face through my Fenders. The Timmy also works really well for this application.

I tried mine at 9V today, and damn, I like it even better! Felt even more like part of the amp. I put it back in front of my Switchazel too so I don't lose my solo boost.
EDIT: I like 12V even better than 9V!!
Also, my RSA23 already has the plexi/jcm thing going, but the DSL sounds great on top of it too as a low/med gain boost.

These are my findings as well. I really love the "Rock" setting. The "Rawk" mode is very cool too but I prefer it for lead work over chords as it's a bit thicker sounding with more upper mids. I set the tone at 11:00 and the Gain at 1:00 for great AC/DC style distortion. Sounds fabulous.

How is the DLS working out at loud volumes for everyone? I got a Plexi style head that was built for really clean, loud tones That I run through a 4 x 12 and was wondering if anyone else was running this pedal through a similar set up? If this pedal makes a small combo amp sound like a 4 x 12 , That will put me somewhere around 3 full stacks of sound, right?!

Haven't tried it with a dirty amp but, I can compare it to an OCD v.4.
With single coils, it has less gain than the OCD. At max gain in Rawk mode, I would say that it has the same amount of gain if the OCD was set to a gain of 1:00-2:00 on the LP side of things (about 12:00-1:00 on HP). The DLS has less bass than the OCD, but it cleans up just as nicely....I mean it, JUST as nicely. I haven't found many pedals that can do that, but the DLS can in spades. The DLS has more mids than the OCD, so I noticed, imediately, that it comes right out in the mix.
The only drawback I've found to the DLS is, that on the neck pickup, it can get a bit flubby on the bass if you're not eq'ed right, but that's no big deal. The pedal is fantastic!!!!!!!

Hmmmm....
Things I liked about the OCD
1. dynamic response
Things I didn't like about the OCD
1. flubby bass
2. not enough mids
3. Didn't sound good with the gain past noon
4. The treble seemed a bit harsh at times with single coils
5. unity gain was below 9:00 on the volume knob
6. Lacked sustain (maybe a byproduct of the dynamic response?)
Sounds like CB may have an OCD killer here. How's the treble response and sustain and where is unity gain?

Sustain is MUCH better than the OCD. That's one of my main issues with it. You can have the gain cranked and the sustain just isn't where it should be (if it was an amp cranked like that). The OCD isn't leaving my board though, I'll use it goosed with a KOT for higher gain applications. The treble on the DLS is wonderful. Gives a very pleasing top end chime that just doesn't exist with the OCD..without getting harsh.
I know it sounds like I'm trashing the OCD, I'm not, it's still one of my favorite pedals, but the DLS is just different in a very good way.
I don't remember where unity gain was..I'll have to get back to you on that.

Does the DLS have enough gain for 80s era Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, etc.? It seems like every pedal that sounds good to me tone-wise is always just a hair shy in the gain department, so I hope this one has the tone AND gain that I'm looking for.

Thanks, I typically use smaller amps and have natural OD from the amp. Think 5 watt Swart STR-tweed and Victoria 20112 with Blue. My board doesn't have much room so it would be in rotation with an v.4 OCD. There are no Catalinbread dealers nearby, so I have to rely on you guys for info.
Someone run the DLS into a dirty amp please! Thanks!
For those of you using this pedal in lower gain applications, does anyone have a comment about bass loss with this pedal when compared to the bypassed tone? Definitely sounds like it retains the bass in the videos, but I can't be sure.
My favorite low gainer for a while now is the Screw Driver and I can set that up with no bass loss at all. In comparison, I just received a KOT, and the bass loss was too much for me.
So, how's the bass? Too little (KOT), too much (BoR) or perfect?
Thanks!

Remember, a lot of those tones were boosted Marshalls, not Marshalls by themselves. For example, Priest used treble boosters in front of their Marshalls. DLS was designed respond the same way.

We tried to keep it true to what we were hearing with actual amps. Some of our favorite album tones had to be "sorted out" for things like Distortion +, treble boosts, Toobscreamers etc. Though in most of those cases it was pretty easy to hear. The ones shrouded in folklore like Van Halen or Page or Clapton were a bit more difficult.

I feel that the bass level is just about perfect. It doesn't boost it unnaturally (if at all) and it definitely doesn't cut the bass. I'd call it just above unity bass. This is a big issue for me as well so I understand why you asked. I'm definitely still in the honeymoon stage but I love my DLS.

Howard and I got to talking about this clip tonight actually. He agrees with you methinks. There were all sorts of conditions to consider. I remembered the Strat was the first thing we shot that day. This video was basically his warm up that day. First thing I did was stick him infront of two cameras, hot bright lights, with protools running, cold hands, within very close proximity to the amp, and said "ROLLING".
:thud
I am not trying to make excuses cause his playing doesn't need me to do that... But the more I think about your observation the more I realize you're intuitive enough recognize the fight, which is great. I am sorta delivering the Paul Harvey.

Right now all I have noticed that that the Rawk setting on the DLS will give you more gain than the Distortion III and that the tone knob on the DLS is much more useful...I don't know for sure but I think it might be active.

hey thanks, man!
the guitar chain in that track is a CS '60 strat (with stock pups) -> rangemaster type booster (Javaboost set to mid boost) -> DLS -> Princeton (set to 2 which is barely cracked open on the volume, no amp breakup). :AOK
the idea was to be able to get old school metal tones the old school way... plus you can disengage the booster and go back to the DLS' plexi-ish crunch for a wide palette of tones.

I have both. I'm a big fan of the DIII - best under-$100 low-gainer I know. Has a few meh sounds in it and a couple of really good ones... nice for BFG-type fat rhythms.

Ok, I've got a little more time now.
+1 to it not feeling like a pedal....the DLS is much more sensitive to pick attack than the MXR. More bottom end too....like I said...I think the tone control is active. Rolling it back seems to boost the lows insteand of just cutting the highs.
It's also got that "I'm holding this thing back" instead of "I need to make sound come out" feeling you get from really driven power tubes...if that makes any sense.
The MXR isn't coming off my pedal board any time soon since it has this strange ability to thicken up my strats like no other pedal can, but the DLS will be taking over all humbucker/rhythm/hard rock/ blues solo duties from now on.

Your videos always make my day whether I like the pedal or not. Say hi to Sadie for me.
Concerning the DLS, the more I play with it, the better I like it. I've even stacked it with a '69, Lunar Module, ScrewDriver, Timmy and BBB07 and it sounds killer with them all. My favorite part is how crunchy chords sound with it. Very evenly balanced as far as tone, no muddy bass, just perfect. It also sounds great with all my amps and all my guitars.

I'm digging the soundclips... does it have enough gain to be the main distortion/overdrive pedal?
How does it compares with the BB preamp pedal?
The BB preamp has a lot more gain IMO and and a lot more mids and compression. The DLS is way more open and amp like. I should mention that I'm not a fan of the BB preamp so my opinions are definitely biased.
Regarding whether it could be your main pedal, it depends on what style music you play. It's a very dynamic pedal that is lot like playing through a British style amp that is distorting a bit. It can get enough gain for solos but I feel it's better if you set it up for a rhythm tone and then boost it for leads with a thicker sounding pedal with more mids. It still sounds good hitting it with a clean boost but the top end on the DLS is so open that it benefits from a middy boost for added solo girth. I just remembered, though, that the RAWK setting does have more mids, gain, and body to it so you could use that setting for a thicker sound (I live in the ROCK setting).
I had a gig at the Fillmore poster room last night and used it off & on throughout the night. This was a quieter semi-acoustic gig where I played electric guitar and lap steel. I easily got great lightly crunchy tones at volumes that were appropriate for the room. It was also perfect for lower gain solos that still needed a bit of sustain (I use the distortion side of a Teaser Stallion for thicker sounding distorted tones - great pedal as well). I tried it for slide and found that it sounded really good but may not have enough compression for some slide players. It felt more like playing slide through an AC30 that's cranked up a bit than something like a Super Reverb. I should mention that I was playing a Tele, though, so this would have sounded completely different with humbuckers.
It's a very cool pedal that I'm finding more & more uses for.

Glass? Anybody can play glass slide. It takes a real man to use a pound of squared-off aluminum!I think it would be bulky and hard to control. I'll probably just stick with a traditional glass slide.
