The best is Bob Dettore from DST Engineering. A little north of Boston but he's tops and his work is impeccable and reasonable.

I've heard great things about Bob Dettore but never used him.

Tom at Aztech in watertown is good too. He's a geek at heart and while he can appear to be immersed in his work and dismissive at times, the dude has a photographic memory of sorts and can recall specific details of work done on an amp from years ago.
He's worked on all my amps. I've not had a problem.

Well put! He's busy and can have a quirky sense of humor, but he's a stand-up guy and I've never had problems with him over the years. Highly recommended. :AOK

I've heard much good about JC's in Beverly, Ma. I once dropped some work off with him and when it wasn't done a month later, I said screw it, and took it back. Maybe he was extra busy then, maybe some folks don't mind the wait; but I couldn't make it with that schedule.
I will generally pull a chassis outta an amp, box it up, and ship it to one of a coupla guys around the country that I have had good exp and quick turn around with. I have not needed amp work done in a while, and the above was my practise when shipping and gas to get to UPS was cheaper. I may need to re-evaluate the economics of this practise now. I will check out this Dettore fella.

Bob is also located in Beverly, closer to downtown than JC

Another recommendation for Tom at Aztech. Top quality repairs, mods, whatever you need done... and at a very reasonable price... Great guy too.

Roy Goode is the guy you want. Trust me. He's got amazing ears and works on a lot of the amps of top guys in town. Well worth looking into.

+1 on Roy Goode. He is really fantastic. He's extremely gracious with his time and knowledge and in addition to repairs I've sat with him for hours talking about amps and gear. I've also used Tom at Az-tech and I like him too, but he's different than Roy. Tom has a nice blue-collar kinda approach. If somethings broke he'll fix it. Roy is an artist. If you want to improve or customize the sound of your amp he's the guy.

Roy Goode is amazing but he really does not look for work. He's got alot going on. I am lucky enough to be able to use him but you usually have to wait a seriously long time for stuff. He does alot of work for some great touring musicians coming through town so I think that is the better paying and higher priority gig for him.

He is one of the nicest guys I have ever met too and very eager to share knowledge. He will literally BS on amps for an hour when you see him and you feel like you just got a masters in amp design listening to him.

He does have great ears and he has alot of NOS parts to repair collectible amps. He bought up tons of NOS shop parts over the years.

IF, you can get your stuff to him you will be happy. If it's some basic thing like a cap job, etc I would use Stan Dey. He also does top notch work.

Stan picks up hs stuff weekly from Cambridge Music Center.

BTW, it seems CM may be closing it's doors this month :(

Agree with the above post. A guy like Stan (or Tom) is a great tech. Roy really is a freaking tone shaping artist.

Alot of the really great guitarists from the area use Roy. Duke Levine, Joe Perry, Duke Robillard, etc etc.

If you're on the North Shore, Bob Dettore is great. Very quick with email and a nice guy to talk too.Good turn around time. My jcm800 is magic.
His DST amps rock!

JC is good, I've never had problems with him, but I've also never left a repair that I needed done quickly. He's a nice guy, but slow. He has a one week + turn around on guitar setups unless you really push him, or know him. Overall though, nice work.

I've had friends who've had great experiences with Cambridge Music and Aztech as well, though the NS is more convenient for me.

Roy Goode in Arlington (works out of his house) is fantastic and very well known among people in the business. Especially if you have a vintage Fender or Marshall. He has worked on amps for some of the biggest names in the business.

I agree with this. It's an hour+ drive for me and well worth the trip. Bob is the master, very meticulous work, and can shape your tone too. He builds fantastic amps too.

Just wanted to say thanks once again to everyone who posted.

I decided to take my amp to from Tom at Aztech, since he came highly recommended from many TGP members, and he's only 20 minutes from my place. Well, he did a kickass job, turnaround was really fast, and price was very reasonable. So I'll add myself to the list of people who recommend him!

Cheers!

More love for Tom at Aztech in Watertown. He's like Doc Emmet Brown, but minus the plutonium/hunted by terrorists thing.

Seriously, though, he's the best in MA.
