Which of these is more transparent and won't affect my guitar tone? I have a new class A amp that has an ef86 tube, sounds a lot like an old AC30. I play it cranked to a slight break up, and have a crowther Hot Cake for heavy overdrive. I was looking between the Maxon 808 or the AC Booster for a little push for some light overdrive.
anyone?

The AC booster will be more transparent.

Is the AC Booster have much clarity? I don't have the chance to try one out before I get on. I've heard clips on youtube and it can sound a little muddy, but i don't think i'd have the gain up past 9:00. What I like about it is that you can/remove treble and bass. My amp has a great sounding low end and I don't want to compromise that with a tube screamer. Does this pedal stack well? I'd stack it with my Hot Cake for solos and heavy overdrive.

i had an older one for a few months. turned out i didnt like it much on its own, for the mid-gain i wanted to use it for, but STACKING it was alot of fun. i got great tones with it and a Liquid Sunshine.

AC has more gain on top and a Baxandall EQ to suit different amps, humbuckers or single coils, etc. Maxon is more classic, it has the same output section that TS9 or TS10. The enclosure is smaller, cheaper and sounds great too. If you like Tube Screamer sounds you will enjoy both, sure.

That's not my experience, my friend Eric Johnson told me about it. :D

RC booster will be more transparent than the BB, but maybe consider a Sexdrive for transparency or maybe a Timmy.

Also, in the non-transparent realm, the Hot Cake goes much better with the ACs and would be a great addition.

Of those two the AC sounds perfect for your needs. The Hotcake with the gain turned down doesn't do it for you ?
