Right now if I had to pick just one pedal it would be a Lovepedal Les Lius.
I love the COT50 and this pedal allows me to get the COT50 tones (on tchula setting) and use the volume knob for shades of gain, and then Kick on the second channel for a more satchurated lead tone that isn't much louder. It sounds simple enough, but I cant tell you how many 2 sided pedals Ive been through that just didn't get the boost ratio right. This one is perfect in that it doesnt sound like you stepped on a different pedal when the boost is engaged..it just sound like you made your pickups 2 or 3 clicks hotter...
I run this into the clean channel of my Shiva and it gives me the swampy rootsy stuff that the shiva doesnt inhearently have.

For me and my rig, I would say the Barber Small Fry.
Barber makes excellent pedals in general but I love this pedal for its versatility and flexibility. There is so much tone-shaping flexibility in the pedal that you can match the EQ to practically any amp. In addition, you have a toggle switch that allows you to adjust the type of clipping you'd like the overdrive to use - anything from a pedal-like overdrive to a power tube-type overdrive. It gives you the option of how much compression you want to come through in your OD as well as a wide range of gain. Everything from really clean to a Dumble amp cranked.
Now what I personally love most about this pedal is that it cleans it real well with the volume knob. I mean...REALLY well. Some ODs I've played with clean up the gain but you get a loss of tone (ie. treble/bass loss). I even have a cap/resistor pair wired in my volume pot as the treble bleed cap and some drives just don't do that good of a job. This pedal really retains your tone as much as it can possibly do. And with a pedal that cleans up well comes great pick attack too. Softer attack would give you a nice clean tone while some harder attack would really grit up. This pedal isn't leaving my board for a while...if at all.

Hands down the Kingsley Jester!! :bow
I own a Zendrive, AC Booster, BB Preamp, Providence Sonic Drive 3 and in the distortion dept MI Crunchbox and Tonebone Hot British all of which go through a Fuchs ODS 50.
I really like these pedals all be it some more than others but the Jester really stands out. None of the other pedals for all of their accolades sound as amp like as the Jester or will clean up via your volume knob as well as the Jester. It has a unique sound that is not Dumble or anything else except for possibly a Kingsley amp which I have never tried. I believe it is designed around the preamp circuitry you would find in a Kingsley amp. (which model I'm not sure). Subjective yes but I love mine and it has moved all of my other drive pedals to the shelf. Good luck.

What - Digitech Bad Monkey.
Why - Its cheap and it sounds good. There are no waiting lists. And I don't see Digitech going out of business soon, so I will always be able to get one if the one I have breaks. I also prefer this style on/off switch, vs the 3pdt switch found on a lot of boutique pedals. Great for dark stages.

I'm currently only using a TS-9 and the drive channel of my Blues Deville 4x10. I'm also looking at adding a BD-2 (that I intended to get modded by Keeley prior to the fire nightmare) to my lineup.
But if I had to pick only one, then I'd research one with a boost on it too like the Tim or the FD.

TOTALLY AGREE!!! I just got mine, my first Barber pedal at that. Got a Dual Discrete LTD Special Recipe/Direct Drive Super Sport on the way.
This pedal just can't be beat for versatility. Dave's clipping switch is just brilliant, left is the smoother Barber styled symmetrical clipping, the middle is asymmetrical clipping with slightly less gain, and the right position is asymmetrical clipping with it's intensity controlled by the dynamics knob.
The dynamics knob is cool in its own right too, sort of a reverse compression knob, the farther clockwise, the more dry signal seems to be blended.

My TS9 (Monte Allums mod) has been on my board for maby five years now (I bought the TS9 back in 1995) and it has survived the attacks from among others the Eternity, BJFE LGW, Noc3 Pure, Drive HBE Powerscreamer and Foxrox ZIM. So I guess I have to do a very non TGP-ish thing and recommend a cheap and not very boutique Tubescreamer. But the BJFE Honeybee is fantastic...

Totally depends on the guitar, amp, mood, day of the week, musical style, what I've just been listening to or just what sound I have in my head that moment.
With most guitars, but esp Gretsch - Bad Cat Two-tone. Best OD I have and definitely canbe most amp-like. Because it almost IS anamp.
The other two I rate are the BB and the BYOC Shredder. The BB is awesome and very versatile. I like ODs with a bass pot.

I would like to add, for the record, that I picked this over: Zendrive, Eternity RH, Eternity Burst, COT50 Red, Lil China COT50, Crowther Hot Cake, BK Butler Tube Driver, a host of tubescreamer-type pedals, and a litany of other popular ODs.
It is the shizzle.

Zendrive. It's not even a contest :phones.
I agree with the Zendrive, especially thru a blackface type clean amp. I also like the Fuchs/Plush Cream, which is more aggressive and very "tube screamer" like.

Yeow, picking just one is tough.
But if I think about it, if I could keep only one of my OD pedals, it would probably be my COT Burst. Sounds great, has an organic, raw sound, and cleans up well while adding a nice bite to the tone when the volume is rolled off.
Or my Timmy, very versatile... ugh... or my Zendrive... The more I think about it -- this is harder than I thought!

Easy answer. Lovepedal Eternity. :dude
It is less compressed, less gritty, less detached, more bass, less mid hump... and yet has that familiar smooth Overdrive sound. I use mine through clean amps so all the aforementioned qualities are important. Most important, it simply sound *right* on everything. From smooth very low gain to aping a distortion box.

I have about a dozen of them here and many times I take several to a new gig or session to see what works best with that particular band/room/music/etc.
9 times out of 10, it's the Lovepedal Eternity, for me. Unless there's a situation where I need more saturated gain. I wish there was a higher-gain version of the Eternity.

For a real Overdrive, Maxon OD820 hands down, and I've had or still have at least one of <insert whatever you like here, I've had em all>.
Some more versatile, nothing as smooth, toneful, and plain old tasty. Plus I'm a fast picker but not a high gain guy; most ODs fight pick attack, the Maxon loves it.
I've kept 2 each on both of the boards I own for years. Tried and still keep one of quite a few other boutique ODs around the house, nothing has kicked the 820s off the board.
MI Audio Blues Boy Deluxe is an awful close 2nd.
For just "barely" not clean, with no mid hump (though I love mid hump!) the Barber LTD is hard to beat. Nothing good happens when the gain goes up on that pedal though.
High Gain.... Mosferatu or one of the Barber offerings. MI audio close behind. (Keep in mind that these set at 10 O'clock -12 O'clock = high gain for my purposes)

Fox Rox ZIM, Vintage Tube (VT) card.
Why? It is very organic sounding and responds extremely well to dynamics and volume control. Great harmonics. Sounds equally as well with single coils and humbuckers (although I do love my OCD with my Strat). It is built like a tank. It is my desert island pedal fo sho.

Lovepedal FAB 50 - a touch more gain and presence compared to the COT 50. Mine is the "Angus" version - it turns my BF Super Reverb into a JTM 45. I can go from clean blues or funk right into AC/DC just by turning up the volume knob on my guitar.

I just picked up an AC Booster which I am really impressed with. I'm not a fan of the gain on it, but using it has a boost with a little gain into an almost broken up amp...sounds awesome. But I love my Crowther Hot Cake. That thing has some pure sounding overdrive.
:huh I can't believe that we have 68 posts and no one said Tim was their #1. It does the trick for me. Sounds just like my amp/guitar only MORE. Very dynamic response to pick attack and it has a great boost.

NOC3 Firefly
Not very popular around hear but works in a lot of settings for me. I started playing a Vox style amp about 4 months ago and had a hell of a time with OD's for Tele's.
Tried a Klon, AC Booster, Rat, Fulldrive, Blackstone, OCD, Boss OD-3, Fat Boost, Box O Rock, Eternity and ended up coming back to the Firefly. It just fits for me and is fairly versatile. At home it's not the sweetest of the above mentioned but on the gig it always works.
Then again a Boss GE-7 work GREAT as a cleaner boost for this amp for me.

I don't have alot of experience with this. Owned a ts 808 about 6 months ago put actually prefered the model in my POD better. Got the Wampler SuperPlextortion last week and absolutely love this pedal. Turned off the distortion stuff in my POD and run it with the other effects. It's like a Rolls Royce upgrade for the POD. Plays hell with my Plexi amp models, but i don't care. Works well with all the other models i like and makes the thing sound so much better.

I've tried quite a few but there are so many I haven't tried. Of course your choice is going to be dependent on what you're interested in getting out of an OD. I don't go for a saturated rock-type sound, so I just want it to sound like my amp cranked louder than the room will allow. That's the only reason I ever use an OD any more. And my Silver Kiss (original version) does the job very nicely.

For me, it's an old black box Marshall Bluesbreaker. It's stayed put while others have come and gone. Pretty much a one truck pony, but it does that trick better ( for my needs anyway ) than any other od I've used.
That said, I recently procured an older Tech 21 Double Drive. It requires much more tweaking than the BB, but it delivers big time. A great pedal for live use.

Maxon OD-820
Marshall Bluesbreaker
I expect that the KOT will join the list later this year.
the fulltone OCD if im choosing one....i also have the MXR distortion III which is great with a strat!
How do they compare ?
I'm currently using an OD-9, Crunch Box and DIII and consider switching to OD-9 and OCD, if they stack well enough to get me CB-like levels of gain. Any input on that ?

1.Klon
2.Fulltone OCD
3.Stock Ibanez TS808
4.Zvex Box of rock
The Fulltone OCD has had a rather lengthy love hate relationship with myself, One moment its great then a month later I switch to a crunchbox or stack the klon into the box of rock.. Ended up leaving the OCD,Klon,Box of rock and crunchbox on my board, took up some excess space but I have grotesqe amounts of gain from clean to saturated its all there..

Cool Lovepedal collection. What are all the controls on the Les Luis. Why does it have splotches on it? Probably cause Sean DIY's the paint in his garage. :AOK

I think my KOTv4. I appreciate a lot of overdrive flavors. My board currently has the KOT, Timmy, Screwdriver for ODs, and a Dumb Bell V2 will be joining the mix in the next week or so (really excited about that one!). I like them all.
But the KOT is really cool. It's super versatile, souds great, feels great, fits my rig and my music, and always seems to offer just what I need without being over the top. It makes me play better.

OceanEFX Pearl Drive is still my #1. There's a few more I plan on trying, but for some reason I have a feeling I'll be coming back to this one. I always do. Killer tone for a killer price.

Timmy and Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret are getting the most use on my board right now.

I always come back to the FDII, and now that I have the MOSFET version I'm loving it more. Why?
Extremely versatile, with three modes from clean boost to hotrodded Tube Screamer. Broad range of tones. I could do four sets of covers with this pedal (but no metal).
Musical sweep tone knob with 80% useful range, which is a lot from a single tone pot.
Boost function for even more harmonics and drive.
Insanely good built quality and aesthetically pleasing.
Low end boutique price.

I do dig my Hermida Zendrive2 it's everything they say about it.
and with my Empress Para EQ w/Boost slamming into the front of it....
Makes my Fender Blues Deluxe scream with delight.
I just can't sign off without metioning my SPF Greenline od, this is my favorite TS style, but it's different, it's clean TS, you can play complex chords like maj7 chords
and the chord is wonderfully articulate. I call it my "Sco" pedal because it sounds like Sco's funky chord melody tone. Close that is. :)
All three pedals "on" are still very articulate and musical and not overkill, in fact they complement each other. (the Para EQ is the secret weopon, by itself or with either od, what a great tone shaping pedal)

Timmy, for its transparency and tone shaping properties. In fact, it's a fabulous enhancer.

Right now on my board I have a Tim and a Zendrive. I recently picked up a Catalinbread Hyperpak 'Dirty Channel' and that is growing on me as well. It's staying on my board as it sounds pretty much completely different than the TIm or the Zendrive.
The Tim replaced a CMATMODS Butah, as it seemed to my ears they were covering similar territory, with the Tim being more versatile. However, the Butah seems to add some coloring to the tone that I like, so even though it is not currently on my board, I can't bring myself to get rid of it./
