I'm GASing for one of these, but w/ the Thorn GT90 pickups. Ron hasn't released the full specs yet, but he did say it will be available w/ all Thorn made pickup options.

Ron builds the most amazing guitars on the planet. I seriously NEED to get my hands on one of these :D

Leonc
01-19-2009, 09:28 PM
That guitar was seriously wicked. It was bought by ChiChi and had gave it to me to try out. The strap left it a little bit low for me, but it was still great playing it. Felt right at home. Here are a few other tidbits I picked up from Ron about the guitar.

- The pickups are their design and are wound by a fellow on his team
- While it's a 22 fret neck, the fretboard does not hang over the end of the neck--the neck is under the fretboard right to the end.
- Due to Ron's typically meticulous engineering, there is actually somewhat more surface contact between the neck and body than on other strat-style guitars.
- The body has inset screws so you've got a very, very tight, solid joint.
- They're not currently being produced with traditional woods (i.e. Alder/Ash body with maple or rw/maple necks) though I think they may consider it down the road.

The wiring on ChiChi's guitar was not your standard strat wiring, but I'm not sure if it's standard for this model (Ron? Nick?). 5-way switch. One vol and one tone. IIRC, in position 4, you could pull up the tone pot to put the pickups in series.

Anyway...tremendous guitar indeed. Congrats ChiChi -- enjoy it for many years in good health!

You was killin on the dire straits tune Leon!

I think it's normal 5 way until you hit the push pull on the back and 'cray' positions,
and master vol/tone.

Suprisingly stratty being Limba. The whole thing is just incredibly impressive blend of modern guitar building at it's best, and classic tones.

But my heart belongs to the G/T. :D

Leonc
01-20-2009, 08:24 AM
Thanks Mike...that was fun...next time, I'll have to learn the song before getting in front of 50 people to play it, LOL! Just one of those tunes where you've heard it a million times and by 2009, some of it is just kinda just wired into your brain.

You was killin it yourself, dude! Great tone and phrasing, it's always a pleasure getting to hear you play.

I'm going to have to head back to the shop and play another one of these, methinks...that one sure got the gears and flywheels are spinning around in my tiny brain, LOL!

That isn't the new G/T T Style guitar that was released this weekend,
that's last year's limited 'Jr90' guitar. THey have Thorn proprietary Stapletop P90's that sound AMAZING.

The new SoCal G/T "T" style offers a neck version of his new (but similar to that picture) GT90 pickup.

The stapletops on the Jr-90 Thorns are fantastic. I've heard extremely good things about the GT90 pickups Ron and team are selling now too, and they're an option on the new S and T style Thorns he just unveiled last weekend.

I'm afraid to play one... it may just convince me to part with my S-500.

Not at all. It had the signature 'strat' tone, but also added some 'depth' to it. More like a smidge more 'weight' to the tone, but again, still very much a 'strat' in tone. Not trying to say it's darker...it's not.

I was noodling some SRV and Cray through a BF Fender, and the tones were there.

Not bright at all, as a matter of fact. Sounded like a big, really good sounding strat. You want quack? I heard it Sunday...like SRV? Blues/rock tones abound....

To me, it does what a strat does with a bit of a thicker (and much more useful) character. Also, the bridge p/u was totally useable and I can't say that about every strat I've picked up over the years.

I hate this thread.

Leonc
01-22-2009, 09:12 AM
What was almost surprising was how much it sounded like a good strat. I.e., the totally unusual choice of woods (for a strat) seemed to have a much smaller influence on the guitar's overall personality than many would think.

I say "almost" because it wasn't really surprising to me and probably several others. In this style guitar, I've believed for many years that while absolutely everything contributes to the tone, the basic personality is more a function of the pickups than any other single component or attribute, including woods used (at least within the confines of using decent tone woods). This guitar most definitely will not sound e-x-a-c-t-l-y like a strat made of traditional strat woods. But hearing it in comparison to all the other Thorns (predominantly humbucker or P90 guitars) that were played at Ron's last weekend...it was instantly identifiable as a Strat-type guitar.

only .5 different than Fender Modern 9.5 radius, and splits the differnce between classic fender and gibson radius.

Interesting. As much as I love the idea of either one of these, sell my Jr90 Proto? Probably not.
I play mostly slide at this point and I think the 2Tek would kill with slide.
I'll have to sell something else!

RS with 3 minis? Tele bridge pickup and mini neck?
How about a maple fretboard?
Sorry,dreaming out loud!

Are the bodies made from a single piece of wood?

The bodies are 2-piece, slip-matched. Meaning, they start as one "long" piece of wood, cut in half and joined together - becoming a shorter, wider 2-pc. body blank.
I may do a few with off-center seams since I have a lot of wide boards, just not 12.75" wide.
Thanks for the inquiry.
