I started up a thread not long ago on this topic and everyone's answers just kept me on the fence. No one sold me on either pedal but everyone had great things to say about them both. So sell me!!!! Maybe votes will do it.

Both are based on the Green Russian Muff apparently but neither are able to sound like the other?

Though none of the clips of the Musket I've heard are all that great, people speak highly of it, it is infinitely tweakable, and the real seller for me is that it has a mids knob.

But.....I love the sound clips of the Hoof that I've heard and that apparently it's meaner and has a nicer edge than a green russian. Drawback is that there's no mids switch.

I'm on the fence, tell me which one I should get!

Do what I did. Get both.

I had a hoof and sold it. Should have kept it.

I have a musket fuzz on the way that should be here this week and a Hoof on order with Jamie that will be here in a few weeks. I couldn't make up my mind either.

PM me when you decide which you like better, I'll probably have ordered one by then and I might hate you if it's not the one I got!

Hi Eugene

The hoof has almost no noise, about as much as any OD if even. I've been told it's way quieter than a mayo but I've never played a mayo so I can't comment myself. The hoof is one of the updated devices, check my site in the next hour.

Thanks!
Jamie

I think the Hoof is now a contender for those mighty fine
Skreddy Pedals like the Mayo, Zero or Pink Flesh ...

so if the Hoof II sounds as good as the Hoof (which I own)
and the shift control does what it is supposed to do ...

Hoof II FTW

I've never tried the Musket, but I like my Hoof more than the Mayo or Pink Flesh that I owned. It is an awesome Muff flavor, tuned just the way I like it.

Just got my V2 Hoof in trade for a Musket. I had played the original Hoof plenty but foolishly sold it when I got a great deal on an Afro Fuzz.

This was my chance to finally compare them, having spent the last few months playing the Musket.

They are both EQUALLY Awesome. Having said that, I love the Hoof by a wide margin, but this isn't a slight of the Musket at all, it's just an issue of personal taste.

They both have a certain punchy tightness when you chug some power chords that most other Muffs lack, but the similarities end there.

Hoof
Mean growl, rumbling devil tone. Not incredibly high gain, but it sounds HUGE. Thick in pretty much every setting. 4 knobs, but no matter what it always sounds like refinements of the basic Hoof sound.

Buy it if you are after the loose chaos Muff tones of The Black Keys and Dinosaur Jr.

Musket
Tight, smooth and punchy. So much gain you can soar into infinite sustain if you like, but the controls allow you to sculp that tone to be as narrow or wide as you like, as present or in the background as you desire. Lots of flexibility. Really excels at achieving classic studio produced muff sounds where compressors, boosters, and other fuzz boxes were originally used to send the guitar into a a firm singing lead tone. It can even do scooped, almost 80s metal tones and mid-heavy 70s distortion sounds too.

Buy it if you are after flexibility and interested in the refined, firm and even sounding processed Muff tones of The Smashing Pumpkins or Pink Floyd.

Seriously, there is no right answer to this question. Both are perfect fuzzes to me, it's just a matter of figuring out what you are going for and where your tastes lean.

I hate this site. Before entering this thread I was sure the Musket was for me (I've never heard of the Hoof before) but now... I'm not so sure, but if LowWatt is right, then ... I'll probably be going with the Hoof (since he mentioned the Black keys tone...that's heavenly).!

2 months later, I now have neither. My tastes I have found lie with the Skin Pimp MKIII and a DAM Meathead.

But the Hoof and Musket are both killer Muff fuzzes.

Just another quick question...would the Hoof and Fuzz Factory be redundant? (I ask because I think both are Silicon/Germanium fuzzes, but I've always thought the Fuzz Factory as more of a fuzz face kind of fuzz, I just wanto to have 2 fuzzes and I was hoping this would give me the most versatility...I definitely want a Fuzz factory btw :P)

I'm a strong advocate for the Musket... as far as overall Muff-dom is concerned, the Musket can cover a lot of ground. I pulled some early triangle/ram's head tones from mine right out of the box just from tweaking the infinitely usable mids knob. (I owned the v.2 Hoof at the same time, and the mid knob didn't have as much range). Long story made short, sold the Hoof, kept the Musket. Both were what they were though... still can't really hang with the O.G. Sovtek Green Muff

Really? I'm sold.

Yep. Can't remember his name right now but the man who is Earthquaker Devices (Hoof builder) is based out of Akron, Ohio and handles guitar tech duties for Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. Keep in mind that Dan uses a WIDE variety of fuzz boxes. But if you like Black Keys tones, the Hoof is a great place to start.

Not in the slightest. Completely different styles of tones. Might even be a good compliment. The Fuzz Factory is inherently bright and stabby sounding and the Hoof is inherently thick and a little dark. Their style of fuzz in general is very different too. You could cover a lot of ground with just those two pedals.

Absolutely true. If you are looking for versatility and the ability to cover the widest range of Muff tones, I don't see any pedal beating the Musket.

I'm on the same boat.

I was probably one of the first to get a Hoof V.2 when he finally started shipping and I just couldn't bond with it. Messed around with it alone first and then put it next to my BYOC Ram's Head and the BYOC won. Maybe I just like the Ram's Head sound better, I dunno, but my brother liked the Hoof better. It just didn't have the clarity of the BYOC.

I got my hands on a Musket the other day and while I like it better than the Hoof and it's infinitely versatile, matched up against the BYOC, and the BYOC won again. Great pedal though!

I think I am biased though, I like a Muff that has somewhat of a raspy, slightly out of control edge on it and the Hoof and the Musket don't have that, the BYOC does. If you're looking for Black Keys or Gilmour tone the Hoof and Musket will do it. Pumpkins the Musket will do it. These pedals just don't breakup the way I'd like them to.

I too ordered a Skin Pimp MKIII and have a Meathead on the way.

Just a side-note to what I said earlier... The Musket also caused me to trade my original Triangle knob. It was so good, and so well built that it was almost a no-brainer (small footprint, 9v, true bypass).... the only thing that I really lost was a vintage investment, but I have no remorse about letting it go.

To bump an older thread, I'm looking at both of these Fuzzes as well for that really gritty, coarse old KoRn sound from their first two albums. They were heavy users of the Big Muff in their early days.

Any opinions mucho appreciated!!:dude

I havent tried the Hoof yet, although I recently picked up the musket fuzz a week ago. The musket so far is the first fuzz pedal that suits all my needs tonally. My past experience with fuzz has been limited to the Mayo, trifecta and the MJM London. The mayo was my favorite of the three but could never get it to sound right playing chords although it was beautiful playing lead. Ive sold these last three and gave up on fuzz until the Musket caught my eyes and im glad now that I took the chance.
I honostly cant get the musket to create an unusable tone. Its very, very tweakable and covers so many tones. Very nice.

Sorry to revive such an old thread but sounds like both of these will get me to Gilmour town. I was gonna ask for the Hoof for christmas, but know that I see the Musket is made in Canada I gotta support a fellow Canadian and Im sure the Ill be very happy with the Musket.

I had to vote for equally awesome.

Adding the Germanium trannys in with Silicon on the Hoof just gives it a bit darker sound that retains clarity well and the result is awesome. The Musket is so damn versatile and sounds amazing. You can dial up recognizable tones all day long even go heavy metal or vintage.

Yep. But if supporting Canada is valuable to you, Scott at www.axeandyoushallreceive.com is a great seller in Canada who carries both. ;)

Reviving an old thread. I played the latest version of the Hoof today and was blown away. Now (as usual on TGP) I have another pedal to try - the Musket. Fortunately there's a place 20 minutes away that has both.

I wound up with the Musket. I couldn't resist it's ability to get that infinite smooth, singing sustain for solos. It also can do a crazy metal-like OD sound on humbuckers and P-90s. It's extremely versatile, tweakable and beautifully made. Being an artist myself I can't help but be attracted to the incredible graphics that are silk screened on a charcoal grey base tone with multi-colored sparkles. The surprise graphics inside are wonderful too. Here's what's inside the lid:

But now I'm reading that the Hoof is exceptionally quiet for a fuzz. The noise problem with a fuzz while using single coils is what I'm wondering about - does the Hoof have noticeably less?

I love my Musket, but I also love the 2 EQD pedals I have. These pedals are not too expensive, compared to all the ones I see people parading around. I would give Brad @ Tonefactor a call and see if you can try them both out and keep the one you like. Dropping 165 on each may be a bit much, but you will get the money back on one pedal and not have to worry about what the other sounded like with your rig.
