Good interview with DT in the 2/09 issue of Electronic Musician; includes some chat about his new studio...unbelievable. Here's a link to the online version:

Can we easily vote Derek Trucks as The Gear Page's favorite guitar player under 30?!!!

He's definitely climbed to the top of my rankings!!!

Derek is a genius with a musical maturity well beyond his years. His potential is unlimited IMO.

That was an outstanding interview. I really enjoyed hearing about his studio. I cannot wait to get a copy of his new cd. I think I will pick it up tomorrow.

Thanks again for posting the interview.

Here's a good video interview I found last week. It's about 25 minutes and worth a watch.

Hmmm........I can't decide between him or Joe Bonamassa. Joe can sing, Rock, play the Blues, acoustic, And Derek is just brilliant at what he does.

:tapedshut I hope nobody ever sticks a gun to my head and makes me decide!

Give me Trucks any day. Joe is a great player and is definitely a "guitar player's player" but I think Trucks' band is much easier to listen to for long stretches.

That's just MHO of course. I just talked my soon-to-be-wife into using the song "Our Love" off Trucks' new album in our wedding. That wouldn't have happened with any of Joe's songs!
:AOK

I think that says a lot about Trucks' ability to play with great tenderness and subtlety. Chicks like that kind of stuff. :)

True, but Joe is just another really good generic blues player. Trucks is a more unique player.

Sweet, he probably lives an hour an half away from me....I need to become 'the guy on the couch' at his place, man.

That is really true. No one else like him. There are plenty of great Guitar Players that don't sing........Santana, Beck,Schon, and they all front bands. OK you all convinced me..........Derek trucks it is!! http://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon14.gif

Nothing Generic about Joe B. to me though. He holds his own in almost any arena I've seen him play in. Ever hear him in Bloodline with Jaco's kid? INSANE.

I respectfully disagree on the "generic joe" part. Both are fantastic and equally talented in my book. It would be a tough choice for me too OldSchool. I think I'll need to wait and decide when Derek has a few more solo albums under his belt. Both guys have their niche.

Jaco's kid wasn't in Bloodline. Miles, Berry Oakley, and Robbie Krieger's sons were though.

Since Joe's over 30, he doesn't qualify for the hypothetical list :) Trucks it is!

Actually it's Joe's "attempted groaning/singing" that turns me off from his playing. He turned Walk In My Shadows on his Live From Nowhere album into a totally generic blooze-fest with his whispery-groany crap. The guitar playing is great. Hire a singer-he's your first line of communication.

Really? I'm really screwing things up today! I remember seeing Joe when he was just a little Kid at NYC area guitar shows. If he's over 30..........then I really am getting F**ing old! :jo

Wow. Your entitled to your opinion.........are you sure your talking about Joe Bonamassa and not Gary Moore!?

I got no qualms with lumping Moore in there too, but his vocals have a touch more charm/character to them. Still, they could both use a singer.

Great pick on "Our Love", my favorite track on this CD...got it two weeks ago, and haven't tried of listening to it...just great songs and those licks and tone...OMG. I like that bridge section that reminds me of an old Chicago tune.

I'll give me the best player under 30 nod without hesitation (since Mayer and Paisley are over 30 now).

He's barely over 30 at 31, so maybe you're not quite as old as you think. :)
