I've been spinning their self-titled release from 2008 to the point I'm afraid of wearing the grooves out.. they've gotten a ton of press in the indie scene but I was just curious if you guys have been enjoying them as much as I have?

I've been jamming along to Blue Ridge Mountains all morning on my guitar; some really interesting chord choices in this song.

If you haven't heard their s/t album I highly highly recommend it if you're a fan of My Morning Jacket's more folk side + lots more reverb or some of early Wilco or Son Volt mixed with the Beach Boys... labels never do a band justice though. I recommend listening to Blue Ridge Mountains, He Doesn't Know Why and White Winter Hymnal for starters.

Mykonos is also amazing though its not on the record, rather, as a B-side on their EP for Sun Giant. :band

I've seen them a few times and have listened to their album/s.
They first opened for Dr.Dog and then set out on their own.
They're very solid live... I was amazed with how perfectly they were able to harmonize.
Nice guys, too... I spoke to a few of them at the bar after the show.
Great band!..

I just found an SNL performance.. cool!

I like 'em. Excellent melodies and arrangements. Old farts like myself have a hard time finding new music to relate to. This is good stuff.

Love them... loved them for some time now (I live in the NW where they live and started out).

There seems to be a Seattle thing going on with this sound. Ben Bridwell and Mat Brooke formerly of Carrissa's Wierd have a band called Band of Horses now that is in the same vein and growing very popular.

My Morning Jacket is my fave of the reverb laden 70's-ish rock that seems to be riding a wave. I would check them out as well if you dig this sort of stuff.

Thanks - jv

I was pleasantly surprised by them on SNL (the rest of the show was the pits, though).

I caught that. I thought they were great, and the emphasis on the vocal arrangements was way cool. I'll probably get the album (I haven't said that about anyone in quite a while).

FF are a very welcome breath of fresh air and the SNL appearance shows why.

I read a quote regarding FF by The Edge today in the latest "Mojo" magazine.
He said it was his favorite cd from 2008 because they, as he put it, "put a new twist on a classic sound". He also said that it was nice to hear harmonies in music again.

How bout TV on the Radio? Got the number 1 band of 2008 from Spin Magazine. From what Ive heard, they sound good.

Band of Horses is great...I gotta grab the Fleet Foxes s/t. Some good stuff out there right now..

Hyped up more earlier last year but the Dodos from San Francisco are in the same vein (kind of) as the neo-folk bands but with a bit of an aggro edge...

Pretty damn good live too.

I work at a studio. The young, hip engineer in studio C put some Fleet Foxes on my iPod. Whenever I'm on shuffle and one of their songs comes on, I instantly like it. It's so refreshing. Not familiar with the other bands people are comparing them to, but I will check them out also.

i think they gave the best REAL live performance on SNL for the past 5 years at least. and looking at YouTube, they seem to consistently good. the record is really, really strong too.

it will be interesting to see how they evolve - the record is all in kinda one pocket (albeit a good one). personally I don't get the references/comparisons to Band Of Horses - they blow that band out of the water in all departments - songwriting, playing, and harmonies.

although their facial hair needs work

I absolutely love these guys! Found out about them sometime in late 2007 and I've been following them ever since.

Their self titled album easily made the top 3 albums of the year for me. The 'Sun Giant' EP is also fantastic (check out Mykonos, and Drops In The River).

There was a great article I read in a recent music mag (Relix maybe?), which talked about the start of the band, and much about lead singer Robin Pecknold's development into music. It was a very enlightening story to read.

I hope they put out some new material this year. It seems that based on the article, Pecknold is constantly crafting his songwriting and getting anxious to record more.

I like em too, sounds of old for sure (not in a bad way). Some of those harmony parts remind me of the Strawbs (a band you young'uns should check out). And some of the parts are definitely a tip o the hat to Brian Wilson..........cool stuff, like to see where they go with it.

I hear a similarity in the vocals of My Morning Jacket, but i think the similarity ends there............

The four bands being discussed are probably my favorites of the last 5 or more years.

Fleet Foxes has a very unique and refreshing sound.

I agree the connection o My Morning Jacket is not super strong... but I do love My Morning Jacket as well. Saw them in Detroit a few months ago, shortly before Jim James fell off a stage and injured himself. Great live show.

And +1 on TV on the Radio and Band of Horses as other really cool newer bands.

yeah - I also dig all of these bands. It's organic and real

that said - I'm also really digging MGMT and LCD Soundsystem - anybody else dig that stuff as well ? Definitely different than FF - but still fresh sounding to my ears

My singer really turned me on to FF last summer. It became one of my top 5 of last year. Definitely has some CSNY and Graceland era Paul Simon influences, but they've got this whole pseudo medieval thing going on too. It's the first album I've bought in a long time that doesn't have lots of overdriven guitars.

If you guys like them, let me suggest Vampire Weekend. It's not the same thing, but kind of along the same indie/world/folk rock lines. Kind of African pop meets ska meets indie rock? I don't know, I really like them.

Also very into Dr. Dog. Another top 5 from last year. They're not doing anything terribly original, but they do write great songs. They really wear their influences on their sleeves.

Also a huge BOH fan. You guys have good taste!
