I bought this from a ma and pa shop for a song and dance thinking that the problem was the tubes. Well, I put new tubes in and its still extremely farty on the low notes. Could a cap have gone south? Also, the OT transformer looks out of place shiny compared to the rest of the components and chassis. Did someone stick a tranny in there that didn't belong? There is no name or sticker or anything to identify what kind of tranny it is nor any numbers stamped on it. Must be generichttp://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/confused.gif. Any ideas?

Nope.. that's the AOR. You have to run that thing like a NMV. Krank the master. Also, the push pull knobs fatten it up to the point of mud. IF the master is not wide open, you hear this even more. The trick is to pull the bass but leave it at zero. Some folks think this does nothing but i swear it does. It is the only way to work with that amp. Anyway, i gutted mine.. amp doesn' work but i just play a real jcm800 so no worries while i tinker.

Sweet! I have a 2204 as my main rig but, was just hoping to get a close sound from this ProTube AOR for a backup rig. I do pull the bass knob and then turn it all the counter-clockwise. The muddiness seems more extreme than anything I've ever heard. I'll try cranking the master and using the pre gain for my level. That might work. I'm not a gain freak anyway. Just looking for a classic crunch. No way I can play that thing dimed. If that doesn't do it then I'll reply back. Thanks for the reply.

Hey, I played it again last night with the master all the way up and used the preamp 1 and 2 to adjust volume. I had the bass knob pulled and the AOR channel pulled (the knob farthest to the right). It seems that preamp 1 is a bit darker and preamp 2 is extremely bright so, You gotta find a balance between the two. Anyway it sounds much much better this way. Its crazy how those knobs all interact. Turn one a 1/8 of a turn and you gotta turn 3 or 4 other knobs to compensate. I think I'd prefer the 6 knob version. The bottom end was still a bit saggy but, full sounding. One thing I didn't like was that the upper notes tended to be a bit thin compared to the lower notes. Also, It don't clean up nice with the guitars volume knob like my 2204 does. I was playing it with about half the available gain so, I got a 12AU7 that I'm gonna try in V1 or V2 to see if that fattens up the upper notes a bit. Might try an EQ pedal as well.

Anyway, thanks for your input..

Yep all the controls are VERY interactive. Can be tricky. Once the master is above 5-6 the bass pull becomes much less boomy. This amp is a good canidate for an attenuator. Mine sounds its best at LOUD volumes. Bob
