Those are awesome. How do you find the pickups? I currently use a G&L ASAT Special as my main guitar and think it's really awesome but I would like to move up to something really top end.

G&L makes a fine guitar.

I prefer the Suhr's to ohters because the necks are so great, and you can choose from many different carves. The SS fretwire is the bomb, IMO, and he uses some great quality woods. Their pickups are fantastic as well, both humbuckers and single coils.

I really do like the G&Ls. It's the MFD pickups in the Special that really makes the guitar for me. That being said, I want a really top-drawer 'Tele' sounding telecaster, if that makes any sense. I don't like anything that Fender is producing from their mass-produced guitars and I don't really want to endorse the Custom Shop for various reasons. I would rather have the quality (better quality?) from a Suhr with fully custom options. Sound about right?

I'd love a Suhr with a minihum or PAF in the neck, but with a fat neck. I haven't been happy yet with the off the shelf versions I have seen - fantastic guitars, but I would like to feel the fat neck in person then I'd order one! The tele custom Suhr I used to have I should have never sold. The only thing wrong with that guitar for me was the neck carve, it was fairly thin, but the guitar was fantastic. I've found no other Fender that rivaled the feel and tone of that guitar. If I can get one with a larger neck and it sounds just as wonderful, game over for me!

This guitar plays so buttery smooth... it's like it was custom made for me... (oh, yeah... it was :D). But I can't believe how great the neck feels and plays every time I pick it up. Sounds just as great. :AOK :AOK :AOK :AOK :AOK

Got an idea for specing out another I'd love that would be quite a bit different... but it'll probably be another... oh... 5-10 years or so... before I can afford it .

Steve, I've been coveting your Stern/Summers-stylee Suhr since you first showed it. Still makes me drool.

I'm increasingly thinking that although my Classic S is a great guitar (albeit a bit bright for me), what I really want is the authoritative tone of a tele.

Yeah, balances very well. I did have to get used to the fatter tone as compared to a typical tele neck or strat pickup. But that's what I was after... some fatter single coil goodness, and I love it now. The S90 is really cool on it's on, but also works really well to kick it in along with the bridge PU to get some seriously fat twang.

It has the forearm & tummy contours and top two pickups like a Strat, Those details aside, it's a regulation-size Tele. I think the Lefthanded headstock makes it look longer for some reason.

I had one of the very first 52 RI Teles made back in 1983. I bought it used from a Nashville session player and it was my main guitar for 18 years.

When I got my Suhr Esquire and started usiing it, I sold the old Fender. The Suhr is just better all around for me. The neck carve, the fretwork, finish, resonance, bridge, intonation, tuning stability on gigs---it just beat out my old 52 reissue.

Please remember that those prices are LIST prices. Dealer prices are much lower. This goes for custom orders as well; the list will be very high but your price from the dealer will be just about the same as one found on the showroom floor.

My Suhr Classic listed for well over $4k but I only paid a little over $3k.

Just a little side note: Suhr's customer service is worth its weight in gold.

Are G&L guitars not even close to the craftsmanship and the quality of the Suhrs? They seem much more within my price range...

You will typically get at least 30% off the list price from dealers. Lastly, you can look in our own Emporium for used ones that come up all the time for under 2K.

Yep; I've bought a few that were between $1800-2200 used that were just as good as if they were brand new. Only sold them to fund new purchases, not because they weren't fantastic guitars. The beauty of Suhr is that you can have custom made just about anything within reason you can think of in any combination of whatever, and still pay dealer cost. WELL worth the money.

localmotion411

Different ballgame, IMO.

G&L makes a fantastic guitar, but they are the quality level of the standard/hotrod/reissue Fender guitars (non-custom shop). Each guitar that comes out of the Suhr shop (IMO and experience) is custom shop or masterbuilt quality. Simply can't be beat for the price. You get a LOT of guitar for the money with Suhr. It would cost you twice as much to have a comparable masterbuilt Fender.

Hi Paul,
It`s really not that far, you know!
The really cool addition on this guitar is the Fishman power bridge. I have a Fishman "Powerblend" pedal, which lets you blend the amount of acoustic signal into the amp without having to fiddle around with the control switches and knobs.
The Suhr pickups are really punchy and twangy and ideally suited to the koa.
I have a couple of Scott Lentz teles, a Tom Anderson and several Fenders. I recently sold my GVCG tele. All are (or were)completely different to my ears. I do love the ash-bodied teles, but would not part with the Suhr!

I personally like the tummy and heel cuts on Suhr's teles. Makes the tele fit like a glove for me. But I really don't like the forearm cut on a tele at all. It just doesn't look (or feel quite) like it belongs on a tele. I at least have to have no contours on the front to feel like I'm playing a tele. Gotta have some semblance of that "plank of wood" about it. Had a used Suhr tele with the forearm cut for awhile. Never could quite get used to the forearm cut on it. I have a question about a Suhr Classic T with a mahogany body, a mahogany bolt-on neck and P 90's. What is it? Is it a tele? Is it a Gibson?

Or is it some odd freak of nature that doesn't fit in anywhere, like me?

You will typically get at least 30% off the list price from dealers. Lastly, you can look in our own Emporium for used ones that come up all the time for under 2K.

Maybe someday there will be a Pro Series T.... (Please, Please, Please, Please) :bow

Hi Paul,
It`s really not that far, you know!

Gerald:JAM

Sounds great! Have never played a koa guitar. Similar to mahogany?

I must admit, I was a little freaked out when I first had my Suhr classic - I misread the clarity for brightness - but it really just needs the right pickups and then it's going to be pretty much the best strat I've played. I went through several in the 20 years preceeding - including a Chandler (London) custom job and a Levinson Blade - but they don't hold a candle to it. I'd love to get the cash together for a Suhr T sometime.

This thread needs to be reignited. Love Suhr Classic T series. The Modern?... not so much. Wish they'd come off the "shredder" trip a bit and start a new line with a new, original body style with a retro bent. Grosh did it with the Electrajet... way cool guitar. Now how about a Suhr take on a semi-hollow Jazzmaster-y lookin' space guitar... with maybe Tele saddles with a twang bar option. :aok

C'mon... show us some of your new Classic T's... or your old ones... I don't care... just show 'em!!!

This one is not really as orange-y as the pics... it's more honey colored & amber.

Just got a 2009 roadshow heavy relic telecaster with abby pick ups that is a killer piece. Suhr is much better quality but the fender has a bigger neck (should have ordered the Suhr with a nocaster neck profile that I love)...Can't justify having two killer teles right now when I am in deep need for a Les Paul....Thanks for the comments on the Suhr.

Well, I wouldn't go with a straight 16" radius - very flat - but that's just my preference.

How about transparent burgundy with a mint green plate? I have a strat like that and it's lovely.

Paul, I used that VV Hot T for over a year. It was very good, but I listened to some old recordings I did with a Tele that had a Dimarzio Chopper T in the bridge. I gave it a try and love it. However, i did not like the black blade look, so I sanded off the black paint to expose the silver blades. THAT PAINT WAS TOUGH! Must have been Dupont emron or something.

Anyway, the chopper T is a loud and clear pickup---not peaky, not overwound sounding, very versatile.

Yeah, I had a chopper in a strat many moons ago. So going for a little more of a Stern vibe, I guess?

Absolutely. The inspiration for that guitar was Andy Summers, Mike Stern and Terry Kath. Now I have the pickup combo that delivers those tones. Dimarzio makes some good stuff these days.

Easily my top 3 favourite Suhr Tele designs and colors. I want all of them. BTW thanks for your reply regaring the pics, refering to the guitar gallery website helped me to figure out how transparent those trans finishes actually are. On the color chart trans white looks a bit less transparent for some reason. Might depend on the photographic conditions.

IŽd really like to see pics of the actual guitars though, they are just gorgeous. What are the specs for those?
