I'm working on a new pickup/wiring scheme and wanted to get some feedback from those who normally use 3 pickup guitars:

1.) When in the #2 and #4 positions on the blade, do you find that the humbucker/single combo provides a usable progression from the humbucker by itself, or does it sound unbalanced unless the humbucker automatically taps so you don't have more than 2 coils going at once?

2.) If it's a possible combination on your switching system, do you ever find having all 3 pickups on at once a usable sound?

3.) Do you find series/parallel a useful option?

4.) Do you find out of phase sounds useful?

3.) Do you find series/parallel a useful option? Yes.

Given what you are asking I'd explore the S-1 switching system. It works perfectly in my Am. Dlx. Stratocaster HSS QMT:

The parallel/series switch is hidden in the volume knob. Note the outer ring around the center; the center can be depressed. Depressing it allows 10 different pickup configurations.

My new Suhr that will be arriving in a few weeks will have the following configuration for 2 separate pickguards.

HSS PG

1 - Neck
2 - Neck/Middle
3 - Neck/Bridge Split
4 - Middle/Bridge Split
5 - Bridge Full Humbucker + Pushbutton for Series/Parallel Operation

SSS PG

1 - Neck
2 - Neck/Middle
3 - Middle
4 - Middle/Bridge
5 - Bridge
+ Pushbutton for Bridge Add so i get all 7 Combos with 2 pots and 1 switch plus the small pushbutton next to the 5 way switch.

I'll post pics/clips when the guitar shows up. I'm really excited about this and know it will meet all my expectations. Special thanks to John for talking it over with me and really caring about the customer. I know hes a super busy guy, but he has called me and we have had some long discussions about what i was looking for and he was more than happy to help me out. If this Suhr turns out to be what i think it will be, i have a feeling ill be selling some axes and getting more Suhrs. I think my next purchase will be a handwired amp from him. I already have some ideas brewing! :D

Split the humbuckers. It sounded thin and bright in the 4 position of my HSS strat, sounds great with a coil shut off.

3.) Do you find series/parallel a useful option?

I've got a HH strat with a 3-way rotary knob for selecting series/split/parallel on the neck humbucker. I think parallel is a great option for buckers.
